Webster became the surprise head coach of the New York Giants in a "battlefield promotion" Today he is a surprise contender for coach-of-the-year honors and he has a new oneyeari contract with a big raise in his pocket The jovial Irishman who was given the job when Al lie Sherman was fired after the Giants lost all five exhibition games before the 1969 season "haggled for about 35 seconds" before signing a pact reported at $40000 a $10000 raise The one-year stipulation was at his own request although team owner Wellington Mara said he would have given Webster a long-term pact after the Giants surprising 9-5 finish following a 6-8 mark the previous year The Giants missed a chance at the playoffs on the final day of this season by losing to Los Angeles "When he first signed I gave him a two-year contract because I told him it was a battlefield promotion and the first year wouldn't be a real test" Mara said "The record speaks for itself We improved three games in one season and that means he'd done a heckuva job" There was little doubt that Webster would be rehired although there had been some grumbling when the Giants started the season 0-3 It was thought that Webster might not be a strict enough disciplinarian however the Giants turned around and won six in a row to move into contention East-West Shrine Game Coaches the 46th annual Shrine football game Jan 2 in Oakland him the losses was a 20-13 setback in Miami They also lost to Cincinnati Detroit and the 49ers They finished their regular season with a 38-7 loss to San Francisco But they won the Western Division of the American Conference with an 842 rec ord edging the defending Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs The Dolphins 10-4 have a sixgame winning streak going into the playoffs John Pont left of
