with a 5-2 conference record Duke finished the league season with a 3-2-1 mark This one was in the classic mold of other North Carolina-Duke thrillers although at times the Tar Heels threatened to make it a one sided affair leading 7-0 14-3 and 21-9 But the gritty Blue Devils playing more on nerve than anything else managed to close the gap behind the passing of Scotty Glacken who bombed the Tar Heels for 238 air yards On the ground however Duke could manage only 58 yards to North Carolina's whopping 315 and there it lies the story of the football game That and the way Kesler teamed with Ken Willard to shatter the Duke defense Willard added 107 yards to Kesler's record-breaking 172 The football game was actually settled in the second half's first six minutes a point which winning coach Jim Hickey made during post-game comments Down 14-3 at the time Duke roared 69 yards in just three plays after taking the second half kickoff Glacken firing a 38-yard scoring strike to end Chuck Drulis to close the gap to 14-9 On the previous play the Duke quarterback connected with halfback Sonny Odom on a 31-yard aerial Had Duke been allowed to keep up the momentum It would have taken control from the Tar Heels North Carolina needed only possession of the ball to let Duke know who was boss On the second play after the kickoff Kesler broke over the left side veered to the right and found daylight down the right sidelines Only a desperate tackle by Duke's John Gutekunst a tiger on defense all day leveled Kesler at the Blue Devil seven 63 yards from where he started Moments later Willard banged over from the four Dave Braine then came in to kick his third extra point as the Tar Heels widened the bulge to 21-9 with 12:08 remaining in the third quarter Next time they got the
