II. (iregson Smith field Cir-; passage January 4, 1803. IlltKlrxlire Encounters itfi 'jllMMllllllllV Th.m but Wb 'oine across a lew exceptions. at sixty miles from Bvriera, ra joaraey, I ca.raped close to Soon the Lead men asked tne to shoot a pack is, they had killed a great OU 1 a tme of ix pa any suet ilUCJ rhat morcing killed two sheep, and the same imnned into the zareba and car- IV' ried off a and badly bit a young cow. rNexf morxdng 1 saw two Somali men running after a hyena with spears, hut he only kept about 100 yards in front, and as soon as they stopped he did the same and had a look at them, and on their returning he quietly walked on.

1 was busy with a koodoo head at the time, so did not go after him, but evi- dentlv he wanted to see what I was do- ing and so came toward me. When about 100 yards off I put a bullet through his shoulders. So much for No. 1. He knew how Somali could throw a spear, but not how far a rilie would carry.

K-ext day at noon we heard a great shouting about a mile off. After awhile I made out that a lion had killed one of my camels. I took the 4.50 express and started off. On arriving on the scene I found it not a Hon, but a hyena, and that i he cam 1 was nor dead, but badly bv.i on the hind parts. A woman said the hyena was behind low bashes about 150 yards off.

The bushes three in number, were only le aiirn ind on an open plain. As i menhad been making a great id uhiiiir would ston there. 7 However, I went to have a look, and wheq bout seventy yards off the bush up came a head and took a good look at me, and then went down slowly, like a lion crouching. I went twenty yards closer, when up came the head to have another look. I took a steady aim, and next moment an express bullet between the eyes of a hyena finished him.

He was a very large and fat beast, with a good coat of hair, and had a good portion of a sheep in his inside. Now I could imagine one going for a a camel if starved, but not when fat, and at midday, with a man and woman accompanying the camels a thick bush within 200 yards on the left, if he had wanted to get away. Instead of doing so he kept to the open country, with three bushes hardly large enough to conceal him, and then held his ground until shot dead. I think it showed great pluck. End of No.

In the night the men heard some of the howling, so at daylight I went over to where I shot No. 2, and there, sure enough, were three more hyenas. Jupt then one of the three picked up the id one by the back an 1 carried i in his month, with his head thrown up to keep it ofr the ground, only the feet He took it about sixty yards and put it un ler a bush. I lay still for a few minutes, and then the vultures came doWn, but the' three hyenas drove them o-T. I then sat up and one of.

them saw mt-. As they were only 123 yards oii', bow-ever, I liad a good shot, and a hollow bull ished No. behind the shoulder tin- two mado off. SO I left In the afternoon of my Somali men said there was a hyena keeping off the vultures, jl went -ut with the glass and saw he had taken the last dead one about 200 yards up a stony hill with some large rojeks oil the top. He was just going back to the rocks after having made a sortie upon the vultures, i then went up toward the rocks, wh out he came and took a good look, standing facing me.

It was a long shot, over 200 yards; but by good luck I put a bullet in the center of his throat, killing him instantly. This made the fourth. Next morning I went to take a look and there was one with the dead one shot the day before. Lond Fie! 1. Voices ef Elena.

DR. YATES STILL CONTINUES IN IT Revs. IJeaman and Bishop Come Back to ir Charges Where They Have Met the Requirements. The conference voted to hold its next rm ju st Wilmington in Fifth street churctt. Votefl of thanks were given to the pre-sidii it bishop and to the secretary of the cod fe re nee.

After adjournment an appropriate hymn wis sung and an eloquent prayer oflVred by Dr. Yates. The bishop prefaced the reading of tbe appointments by iemarks to the effect that a man oidinarily receives the appointment fur which lie has prepared himself. From the divine point of view ail places are first class, hut from a human point of view we 1 ave often to take a first-class man and put him into a third class place which demands this kind of a man to bring out its possibilities. Some of you are going back if you are displeased, it is your own fault: you had a chance to make it a good place and if it is not so, why do you want some one else to stand in your shoes Bat your privilege is a great one.

Yonder is the little mission with its poor homes with mothers and children. Go to them with the bread of life. Keep self out of your'' calculation entirely. Your wife and children, you can better trust them to Jesus Christ than to any bishops and groups of presiding elders that ever sat in counsel on your work. AI'l'OINTM KNTS.
