Ludington Dally News, Saturday, October 2, Hiller Tosses 4-Hitter In 1st Start Since '72 KC Clinches West Title To End Reign MILWAUKEE (UPI) John Hiller Friday night made his first start since suffering a heart attack during the 1972 season. And it was a dandy. He pitched a four-hitter against the hapless Milwaukee Brewers as the Detroit Tigers whitewashed Milwaukee 5-0. Since recovering from his heart attack Hiller has made 215 relief appearances for the Tigers, but the ease with which he handled Milwaukee by going nine near-perfect innings had reporters asking Detroit Manager Ralph Houk if Hiller could become a starter next year. "No way, no way," Houk said.

"He's one of the best relievers in baseball and I'm going to keep him right there." Houk said that Hiller had great control all night and pitched a great a helluva pitcher," Houk said. Hiller enjoyed the victory, which raised his record to 12-8, but said he doesn't want to go back to the grind of being a starter because he prefers being a reliever. "Houk was short handed tonight. Vern Ruhle has had elbow trouble and our two long relievers pitched quite a bit in Cleveland," Hiller said. "He just asked if I cared to start and go as long as possible.

It didn't matter to me at this time of the year." It turned out great for him despite the fact that he felt he was done in the late innings. "In the sixth and seventh innings I started tiring and I thought I'd had it. But then in the eighth and ninth I got stronger," he said. "But I like to relieve," Hiller said. "It's too much work to start.

I don't think I could start every fourth day." Hiller has had 55 appearances this season as a reliever and done a good job but he did a great job in holding the Brewers to just four hits while walking only one Tiger Box DETROIT MILWAUKEE bl bl Mankwsk3b Younl 4000 Lanecf 4111 Moore 4000 Staubrf 4011 Scott 1b 4000 Morton dh 5000 Lezcano rf 4000 Johnson It 4010 DThomas If 3020 Stanley Ib 4110 Sutherlnd dh 3 0 3 0 3000 Bowling cf 3000 Scrivener ss 4 1 5 0 Heldemnn 3b 3 0 0 0 Garcia 3b 3111 Gantner3b 9000 Hiller 0000 Travers 0000 Totals 34 5 8 5 Totals 30 0 4 0 Detroit 000 000 5 Milwaukee 000 000 0 Yount. 8, Milwaukee 4. 2, Lane, Staub. Kansas City captured its first American League West championship in the Royals' eight-year history Friday night after the California Angels used a homer by Rusty Torres and a run- scoring single by Terry Humphrey to eliminate the five-time defending champion A's with a 2-0, 12-inning victory. The defeat ended an era for Oakland which saw the A's win three world championships in the past four years. Earlier In the evening the Royals lost an opportunity to win the title themselves when Steve Braun's ninth-inning RBI single gave Minnesota a 4-3 victory over Kansas City. "I want to thank Charley Finley and Chuck Tanner for, making my job a lot easier," said a jubilant Herzog. "All they, did was make my players play a lot harder without my having to do anything." Tanner, the A's manager, had been Involved in a verbal exchange with Kansas City center fielder Amos Otis late In the season which seemed to motivate the Royals.

Finley, the Oakland owner, was at the center of several controversies which led to sharp, often-tlmes bitter conflicts between himself and the A's. While the Royals were busy celebrating the fruits of their labor, the A's 1 dressing room was a place where venom, hatred and anger flowed as freely as the champagne marking the Royals' happiest hour. "This was the greatest "team in baseball," said losing pitcher Vida Blue, who went the distance in defeat. "We olayers made it what It was but we never got any help from the owner, Charles 0. Finley.

All he did was meddle and this year he capped it off with all his stupid deals. Now it's all over, we're all going our separate ways and it's going to be a sad day in a lot of ways." tn one of baseball's most talked-about moves, which ultimately resulted in the forced intervention of Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, Finley attempted to sell off three of his top stars for a total of $3.5 million dollars. Blue was sold to the New York Yankees for $1.5 million, with outfielder Joe Rudi and reliever Rollie Fingers sent to the Boston Red Sox for $1 million each. Kuhn eventually ruled that all three players must be returned to the A's "in the best interest of baseball." The move, coupled with the pre-season trade of superstars Reggie Jackson and Ken Holtzman, riddled the A's with, dissension. Seven of the A's are in the process of playing out their options this season and will be in another uniform next year.

"If there is a lower person in this whole world I'd like to know who he or she is," added Blue. "Sometimes I wish I had a better vocabulary so I could really say what I feel about the man. For now, all I can do is curse at him. But I'll tell you this, I'm not to stand around here and pitch for him next year. I think I a good case and can break the contract I signed with him because he didn't keep his word.

"The man is so low, such a filthy liar, there can't be a court in the world that would accept his word. When a man loses his word he loses everything and Finley lost his word around here years ago."
