another hurricane season beginning next Thursday and it promises to be one of the most interesting ever Names are ready for the storms as they come along a better-than-ever radar t-W'ork has been installed and the teletype machines of the 3000-mile hurricane circuit are in place Adding interest to these conventional facilities are plans for launching a Tiros weather satellite early in July from Cape Canaveral and the use of weather research planes to seed rain bands and individual clouds around hurricanes with silver iodide The satellite spinning in space on an equatorial orbit will scan hurricane-breeding areas and quite possibly give first warning that one of the meteorological demons is stirring The cloud seeding experiments will be small scale efforts to modify the weather around storms but not to modify or change the course of the disturbance itself That will come later and all experiments wall be conducted far from land June 15 is the traditional start of the hurricane season when all the intricate precautions against these great tropical storms are placed in motion The season ends Nov 15 The sun reaches its most northerly position June 21 and pours maximum heat on tropical areas of the Northern hemisphere The hurricane is a heat engine which converts the energy into rotate ing winds and torrential rain Few hurricanes form in June and July but they are possible in any month of the year They become more numerous and dangerous in August and the peak of the season is reached in September and the first half of October After that frequency tapers off rapidly Chances are one in seven that the Miami area will be hit by one of the great storms this year This area is in the hurricane belt and experiences more such storms than other sections The probability of a hurricane striking Tampa and St Petersburg is one in 20 and Jacksonville only one in 50 South Florida has suffered through only one hurricane in 11 years and that was last September's lulu named Donna The peak 183-mile winds of Donna slashed heaviest at the central Florida Keys and lower West Coast Donna killed 164 persons 13 of them in Florida and caused property damage totaling 400 million dollars of which 300 million was in Florida Other storms have killed more Floridians but Donna was the most destructive to property in the history Most of dead were Puerto Ricans drowned by raging floods from its unbelievable deluge Others died in the Bahamas where sustained winds were 1S5 miles an hour and gusts roared over 200 milps an hour peak winds from Donna were 100 miles an hour along the beaches and a short distance inland They lost force as they blew over land In addition to the teletype and radar networks the Weather fleet of three research planes is assembling here and the Air Force and Navy hurricane hunt ers aie at their stations in Bermuda and Puerto Rico The last of the research planes is to arrive from Oklahoma City Monday after a summer of tornado investigations The director of the aircraft research facility Carl Reber said a mass of tornado data is being analyzed including strange counter-cur-rents and hot spots found around these vicious destroyers the significance not yet known TUB ENCLOSURES All Aluminum Anodized Fully Guaranteed $6995 Value NYLON BALL BEARING ROLLERS A INSTALLATION AVAILABLE MINIMUM CHARGE 05 Oflep Goody
