Diamonds Once Worn Only by Men CHICAGO -(INS)-- There was a time, believe it or not, when diamonds were strictly for men only. Unsurprisingly, this bit of information comes from a manChicago gem collector Harry Levinson.

Levinson said diamonds were a "male" stone until nearly the end of the middle ages because they were considered a symbol of authority. He said: "It wasn't until the year 1444 that a woman dared to appear in public wearing diamonds. That woman was Agnes Sorel, a Charles the favorite, France. "Her appearance shocked the French court and started a fashion that ended the male monopoly." Levinson said, more than 90 per cent of the world diamond market is aimed at women.
