first driving 59 yards in nine plays with Burns bulling over from the four Pacific came right back quarterback John Read going through the air for most of the 13-play 60-yard march Roger Coleman grabbed a six-yard pass for the (AP) Oregon State University struck for two first period touchdowns then fought off courageous Iowa for a rain-soaked 21-14 intersectional football victory Saturday night The Beavers of OSU cornpletely dominated the first half then got a scare as Iowa struck for touchdowns in the third and fourth periods before OSU regained its poise and ran out the clock Levi Mitchell of Iowa a 5-9 180-pound junior from Gary Ind carried almost the entire offensive load for Iowa Dave Schilling a 6-3 221-pound fullback carried the ball 36 times and gained 174 yards in leading the Oregon State attack Schilling also scored the decisive touchdown for Oregon State in the final period Quarterback Roy Bash caught the green OSU secondary napping and lofted a 48-yard California State College Long Beach 9-6 before 15080 disbelieving fans in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association opener for both squads The massive 228-pound Burns considered a cinch first-round pro draft pick gained but 54 yards in 28 carries less than two yards a crack with his longest gain of the evening a paltry nine yards Pacific Coach Homer Smith stacked his defense against the big fullback and everywhere Burns went the roaming Tiger linebackers went in bunches UOP Field Goal Sophomore Mark Pash booted a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter to put Pacific into the lead and the Tigers spent the rest of the game with their backs to the wall frustrating the alarmed Forty-niners Twice in the furious fourth quarter the aroused visitors had a chance to tie or go ahead but twice they were denied Early in the period Long Beach's Terry Logue barely missed a field goal attempt from the 19 The Forty-niners came right back to drive down to the nine where they needed a yard on fourth touchdown run but Southern California struggled back with an SO-yard parade to gain a 21-21 tie with the Cornhuskers Saturday night The Trojans ranked third nationally and heavily favored trailed the surprising Nebraskans throughout the game played before contest that kept the crowd in a roar with many turnovers of the ball Tailback Clarence Davis rambled nine yards to cap the 80-yard drive by Southern Cal with 8:16 left to play Ron Ayala tied it with the point after touchdown The Trojans who have not been beaten in 23 consecutive regular season games were in danger of losing their first as quarterback Jerry Tagge directed a well-balanced attack Tagge the past week was reported a doubtful participant and was unable to practice because of a thigh injury His recovery was obvious The first period was scoreless Nebraska scored first when Tagge handed off to Dan Schneiss who in turn passed 17 yards to Guy Ingles in the end zone early in the second period After an exchange of interceptions USC's Jimmy Jones tied the score with a four-yard run But before the half ended Tagge hit Johnny Rodgers with a 15-yard scoring strike as Nebraska moved swiftly 74 yards in about four minutes Ayala's second interception set up a Trojan touchdown to again tie it up 14-14 Charlie Evans scoring from the one On the second play after the kickoff the 196-pound Orduna on a handoff from Tagge broke off right tackle and outraced the Trojans' secondary on the tie-breaking 67-yard dash Both teams meeting for only the second time wasted scoring opportunities after sustained drives in the first quarter Nebraska travel from its OWn 17 to the Trojan nine but Orduna hit by Mike Haluchak fumbled and the Trojans recovered on the six Southern Cal promptly came back to reach the Nebraska 18 Davis powered
