Battle Waged For Sumatran Oil Areas Americans Safe, Envoy Believes PADANG, Central Sumatra Jakarta paratroopers dropped around strategic Pakanbaru in the heart of Central Sumatra Wednesday and battled rebel forces for control of the rich oil lands run by the U.S.-owned Caltex Oil Co. (In Jakarta, the government announced Wednesday night its paratroopers and a combat regiment had captured the $125 million oil center. U.S. Ambassador Howard P. Jones said soon after the announcement he had no reason to believe any of the 600 Americans in the area were in danger.

They are grouped at Rumbai, four miles from Pakanbaru.) Encircled By Reds Rebel headquarters here said about 500 Jakarta parachute troops landed at dawn at the anbaru airport but were encircled by rebel troops and guerrilla fighters. Rebel sources said both sides suffered heavy casualties but gave no figures. Jakarta amphibious forces also hit at the east coast oil port of Dumai and started driving inland. A naval attack on Padang, the rebel nerve center on the Sumatran west coast, loomed for Thursday. Biggest Blow At Rebels The parachute attack was the biggest action yet by President Sukarno in his moves to crush the Central Sumatran rebels, who demand a new, anti-Communist government in the Indonesian capital at Jakarta, one committed to giving the outlying islands such as Sumatra a share of revenues derived from their production.

The attack began with an aerial bombing and strafing of the airport, seven miles from baru. Then 16 Dakota aircraft over with about 300 parachute troops. The rebels said the ensuing battle raged on into the tropical night. Pakanbaru is 35 miles above the equator. Americans Reassured Caltex officials said they have been assured by sides that American lives and interests wlil not be endangered.
