their occupational grime they had a modicum of glamour and a subsequent bevy of admiring biographers So the drivers of California's stagecoaches gained a degree of historical Lame not accorded the shotgun messengers who guarded the treasures they hauled New York's eccentric newspaper editor Horace Greeley contributed with reluctance to the national celebrity of the great whip Hank Monk and the wide renown of one-eyed tobacco chewing Charlie Parkhurst was in no way diminished when It was disclosed after death that "Charlie" was a woman The deft sure touch on the reins of John Shine Reason McConnell Bud Pillsbury a George Hacket won favor and acclaim but in moments of danger it was tough straight-shooting men like Mike Tovey who kept them on the box and In the public eye Tovey Canadian born was in his 20s when he reached California in the 18605 He mined clerked in stores hammered out iron shoes in a blacksmith shop and in time found employment with Wells Fargo In his long service with that firm 17 of his stages were held up and 12 unfortunate badmen died for their temerity In 1880 he was riding shotgun out of Bodie a perilous run on which three guards already had been killed One afternoon two desperadoes hailed his coach Mike cut one of them down with his double barrel shotgun and the other fled But the stopped Bandit and guard opened fire One of the highwayman's bullets killed a passenger a pretty schoolteacher Another hit Tovey in the chest Tovey was laid up for several months Once recuperatet he climbed up on the box beside Clint Radcliffe to guard Wells Fargo valuables on the run between Jackson and Tone It was a lonely road dusty and rutted winding through gullies and over low-lying hills At noon on June 15 1893 Mike's stage was about midway in its journey There were seven passengers aboard but for once no gold and neither Tovey nor Radcliffe anticipated trouble But it came suddenly and without warning not from a masked bandit in the middle of the road but from an assassin well hidden behind a large boulder a hundred yards or so away His marksmanship was good Tovey pitched forward dead Radcliffs turned and a bullet caught him in the neck Two more shots were fired and each of the wheelhorses went down No trace of the ambusher ever was found though posses scoured the countryside for miles around He vanishel completely as had the outlaw who once had sworn to kill Tovey Milton Sharp Today traffic speeds quickly over the Jackson-lone Road and only a few hurrying travelers pause to view the marker the Native Sons of the Golden Vicst encounter had not been altogether one-sided and Mike made his way to a nearby woodchopper's cabin to have his wounded shoulder dressed while the driver watched the coach When he returned the driver was chattering with fright and the money box was gone In Mike's absence the surviving bandit had circled back Tovey searched the outlaw he had killed finding on him papers which identified his companion He set out to find him and he did several weeks later The robber one Milton Sharp was sentenced to prison and Mike went back to work Sharp served 10 years and was released Meanwhile TOVey at Detroit's biggest hotel there's usually someone waiting to ask: "Kann ich helfen?" (May I help you?) The same goes for any of a dozen languages according to the hotel It says it has 200 built-in interpreters The hotel says it keeps a ready list of 200 of its 700 employes from front office help to bellhops who can read and write the world's principal languages It also has at least six workers who are facile with sign language Including a deaf mute woman who works in the hotel laundry A BUILT-IN entertainment 1-1 center can take full advantage of the magic that is incorporated into modem projectors And the best part of it all is that you can build it yourself if you are at all handy at that sort of thing The modern family room makes an ideal location It is the place where family and friends gather for their entertainment and it is frequently rectangular in shape which adapts it ideally to the showing of pictures The first consideration is the screen It can be a pull down type which works like the old time window shade and rolls back up as soon as the show is over It is better though to build It in back of a panel or a picture which will slide out of the way A couple of aluminum strips which you can get at almost any hardware store and a piece of plywood paneling to match the rest of the paneling in the family room will enable you to do a really professional job of making a sliding panel The screen should be glued to the wall back of it using one of the contact glues If you were really ingenious you might attach a small motor to actuate the panel With the screen back of the panel it is protected against dust and dirt and possible damage and it is always ready and perfectly flat If sound is to be used with your pictures the speakers should be placed near the screen so that the sound seems to emanate from the picture The projector or projectors will of course be at the other end of the room Ideally they should be back of the wall and permanently mounted to show through an opening in the wall The remote control which with some projectors even lets you select only the slides you want to show should be brought out Into the room convenient to the spot you have picked for yourself A separate outlet should be provided for the projector so that when you turn off the room lights you will still have power for the projector A fancier installation calls for some changes In the wiring which an electrical contractor can do Separate switches adjoining the projector control position can be installed which will turn out the lights and turn the projector on at the same time A dimmer control can even be incorporated If the projector is going to stay in the room projection tables can be obtained which Incorporate these switches 4 FL 1 1: on I 4 1 ft 'iSi illi 14 Silt i A i i i I 1---N--- LI Oregon Has Plans WASHINGTON (UPI) Oregon is planning a big recreational area along a 150-mile stretch of the scenic Willamette River according to the American Automobile Association (AAA) Plans call for construction of a series of parks viewpoints boat launching sites hiking trails scenic drives camping areas and fishing areas WASHINGTON (UF Oregon is planning a bi ational area along a stretch of the scenic ette River according American Automobile ation (AAA) Plans call for constru a series of parks vie boat launching sites trails scenic drives 1 areas and fishing areas jp mow O'cobek e5P I-1 )6 1111110114 ha tit tat 00: "I had a great time Herbie considering it only cost you 20 cents an hourr q1 I-1 Nollil mloomom tit 1101 ham munz iiCAZIZUWZONVAVaMirtiONSiZECISSitZ2MMA1 Sacramento California THg SACRAMENT9 BEE SUNDAy MARCH 31968 Sacramento Califotnii P9e 12O.
