Coach Jim Hickey brillance as a screen passer and that could be the balance Flor 1 that Johns and Co made the tactics pay dividends Take the opening 68-yard drive for a prime example: On the very first scrimmage play of Johne collegiate career the 195-pound Pittsburgh product peeled off right end behind Turn to Page 18A Col 1 Gann's most reliable helpers at halfback will be Billy AVilliamson the do-it-all junior from Coral Gables and Chick Graning 188-pound junior who operates with an abandon common to the riverboat gamblers who once flourished near Graning's home diggings of Natchez Miss Tech also has a prime threat In field goal kicker Tommy Wells Ida reeds for its already-impressive running force of Don Goodman Jon Mac Beth Doug Partin Bob Hoover Dick Skelly and Lindy Infante Tech of course has its own ideas and ample resources to offset such fancy notions In the beginning it will offer a tremendous brace of tackles in Ed Nutting Larry Stallings Russ Foret and Billy Shaw The Jacket attack is founded solidly upon Quarterback Stan Gann a sophomore like Florida's T-men He was a whiz against Kentucky and distinguished himself against Rice although knocked cuckoo in the early soon From that moment until the Tar Heels' Ray Farris pitched for his second touchdown early in the final quarter the UM was just another football team Once it began to get close at 22-12 however Johns again mustered his forces and again directed them to scoreland lashing the final seven yards on one of his patented quarterback-keep end sweeps The poised youngster the squad's pre-kickoff question mark wound up with a night's production of 147 yards In addition to averaging a dazzling 88 yards per try in 13 carries he true-triggered three of six passes for 33 more yards His first college toss was a four-yard lob to Left Half Jim Vollenweider at the NC one setting up touchdown No 1 Then with the help of artful running by receiver Bill Miller he teamed with tremendous junior on a 13- yard scoring strike Ironically Bobby Weaver the junior college transfer billed as "The Arm" didn't attempt a pass during his two appearances in the game Instead Weaver proved that the idea that he can't run is fallacious by getting off on a nifty five-yard keeper for Miami's third touchdown The Tar Heels stymied with 20 yards rushing by Miami's strong-charging line through the first half necessarily had to go to the air after falling three TH's behind CUSTODIANS OF Touchdown Tommy the miniature cannon used to hail touchdowns were more excited than the players In their pre-game practice they fired a shot so close to Athletic Director Jack Harding he jumped 10 feet "It looks like open season on athletic directors" Harding grumbled heading for the press box Harding's good humor returned when Harry Pearlman the elevator operator expressed optimism "I think Miami will win 14-0" said Harry Harding considered this a good omen explaining Pearlman doesn't even speak to him the nights Harry senses a Hurricane defeat Presents Blanket to Jim Illathinann By EDWIN POPE Assistant Sports Editor GAINESVILLE The University of Florida football team whose passes so far have resembled the last shot out of a Roman candle will come out throwing today On immediate past performance the passes are as apt to land in the arms of Georgia Tech tlefenders or 42000 spectators as Florida receivers But the Gators are going to put the ball Op there and let the Devil take the hindmost Tech is a 6-point favorite for this 2 pm Florida Field affair and should be Florida is just as unbeaten as Tech But in trimming Kentucky 23-13 and Rice 16-13 the Jackets have faced far stronger opposition than the Gators have in beating George Washington 30- 7 and Florida State 3-0 Passing represents the biggest minus mark on the Florida account The Gators gained only 12 yards passing against Florida State last week (and the forecast is for scattered showers today Logical choice to direct this overhead barrage would be Quarterback Larry Libertore But the quick-handed quick-footed sophomore from Miami Edison has thrown only knuckleballs so far and much of today's load may fall upon the 19-year-old shoulders of Bobby Dod4 Jr This seems appropriate in that Dodd's father is head coach of the invading Techs What is even more appropriate ln the Gainesville view is that young in the dark of defeat He tugged absent-mindedly at a brave-but-failing knit blue tie as his North Carolina gridders filed silently past into their Orange Bowl locker room Friday night "Me?" And Hickey's eyebrows reached for his brown hair "You don't want to talk to me I just got beat" Indeed he had a telling 29-12 by Miami's aptly named Hurricanes "There isn't much to say" said Hickey his voice barely carrying above the snap of caps leaving coke bot- ties "We just did a darn poor job of tackling We got men in position but they couldn't bring anybody down The only real thing I could say is that we got beat by a good team "Did the beat hurt us!"
