PACE 10 greensbnrg (IhJ.) Daily News, Monday,Nov. 22,1965 Watusi, Frug, Monkey, Jerk, Swim Not For Hoofer Fred Astaire By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—Fred Astaire, still the greatest hoofer on two feet, furrowed his brow when asked about the current dance crazes among the discotheque set. Question: What do you think of the Watusi, Frug, Monkey, Jerk, Swim and all the rest? Astaire: "They aren't really dances at all." Question: If not dancing, iwhat is it? Answer: "It's more music than dancing, People on the dance floor hear the music, the 'beat, and it sets off a reaction that causes them to go through a series of contortions." Q.: Do you attempt, the new dances? "Not My Racket" A.: "Discotheques aren't my racket. I can cope with the music if I have to. But it's easier for son-technical dancers iprofessional dancers like myself." Q.: Do you enjoy watching the new steps? A.: "Yes. I like watching people who do them well. But I feel sorry for those who don't know what they're doing. Some of them are liable to cripple themselves by throwing their necks out of joint." Q.: Is the Watusi, for example, bad for dancing in general? - "-•--••- it's good because it stimulates interest in music- and dancing. I want to make it clear that I'm not against the new dances. They simply aren't for me." Q.: What are the differences among the Frug, Jerk, Swim and Monkey? nvist is Dead A.: "They are all basically the same step. Arm movements and other contortions make up the difference between them. It ail began with the twist—which is really 'out.' It's old now.' Q.: Do you think the craze will last? A: "Well, it's been around quite a while now, longer than the Big Apple, the Lambeth Walk or tha Black. Bottom. But I 'don't know how much longer it will continue." • Q.: What about the music itself; do you think it's good? A.: "There no question that the big driving beat is basically. hat fine rhythm. I like it. The beat is the soul of dancing." Q.: "Have the new dances made your style old-fashioned? A: "I don't think so. However I'm dancing, much less than I used to, except for an appearance on the Hollywood Palace or other special occasions. I've accomplished just about everything I wanted to do with dancing." What Next Q.: What do you propose to do with your career now? A.: "I prefer straight dramatic acting now. I've done .a four-jpart 'Dr. Kildare' role which should be seen soon. I play a pool player in it, and as you can see I've practically built my house around this pool table. I enjcy' it a great deal." Q.: Will normal Ballroom dancing ever return? SALT CONTENT BOSTON — Ocean water is saltiest near the surface and less so at greater depths. . A.: "It's never-really disappeared. And I hope it never does."
