PAGE SIXTEEN Religion in the News By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer NEW YORK (AP) Those "streaking" eut-ups may be showing more than they realize, including a subconscious wish to be small children again, immune from care or responsibility. That and various other impulses to mock the pressures of adult reality are seen by several religious scholars in the current campus antic of running nude through public places. It may be partly a "protest of the child against the prospect of responsible adulthood," says the Rev. Dr.

Seward Hiltner, a noted theologian-sychologist of Princeton Theological Seminary. "There's a part of all of us that would like to remain basically irresponsible, that wants to go back to uncomplicated childhood." He says this is especially marked in the "intermediate stage" of growing up. Such regressions, intermittently, can be helpful, he says The innate yen for it--for heedless, unblameable childishness--is reflected in the lure of the eternal child, Peter Pan It's also seen in the primitive superstition that "men can lose their problems by shedding their clothes," says Dr. Calvin G. Seeveld, a professor of aesthetics at the Institute of Christian Studies, Toronto, Canada.

While pointing out its naive aspects as well as underlying religious-psychological connotations, the theologians also cite its zany side--its echoes of the absurd abandon of ancient rites of spring. The participants "want to fly like larks," says the Rev. Newman McLarry, southern Baptist pastor of Oklahoma City. While it's somewhat off balance, he adds, "I don't see any Sodom and Gomorrah about it." "It's an absurd gesture in the face of the vaster absurdity around us," says the Rev. Dr.

Joseph Sittler, an i i a a theologian of the University of Chicago Divinity School. "In a time of general muck and guff, it's a sort of good, clean swipe across the dirty face of dissimulation. "In our winter of discontent, compounded by all the administrative rot," it's saying, "We've had enough. Let's do something real crazy. The calculated crazmess of our times has diminished the spirit of man, but spontaneous madness is a kind of purgation.

It has a purgative quality about it." "The nudity is not so important," Dr. Sittler adds. "We've had plenty of that. It's the running, the incongruity of something suddenly, surprisingly joyful and actual in the midst of what has become an accumulation of expected weariness." Coal Output Shows Decline CHARLESTON, W. Va.

D. 1.

The corporation operates the Bark Camp No. 1 mine in Huston Clearfield County, and the purpose of the PIPP plan is to take measures necessary to prevent the discharge of pollutants into Matling Run and Bark Camp Run, both tributaries to the Bennett Branch. The notice was issued after an investigation by Department regional personnel revealed a history of i a a a discharges containing excessive iron. Blamed for the discharges were the lack of dikes and booms on the lagoon and a diesel oil fuel tank on the property which does not have provisions for containing spills. In preparing the plan, which must be submitted to the DER regional office at Meadville within 90 days, the corporation must consider the consequences of, and provide for the prevention of, discharges that might occur during the impoundment, production, processing, transportation, storage, use, application or disposal of polluting substances.

Also to be considered are the storage and disposal of all liquid and solid materials, the breakdown of treatment plant equipment and other incident caused by human and operational failure. PITTSBURGH (AP) --The question of impeaching President Nixon is a political one, says the president of the American Bar Association, and ABA chapters should avoid taking a stand either way. "I believe bar associations, no matter how their members feel individually, should not take a position on this," said Chesterfield H. Smith. Like New Used Cars At Auction Prices!
