ROBERT SHUFELDT DIES AT AGE OF S3 Retired Major of Army Medical Corps to Be Buried in Arlington. A career of fighting and authorship Which began on a Civil War gunboat was ended yesterday with the death of Maj. Robert W. Shufeldt, 83. at his home in the Dupont Circle Apartments here.

Widely known for his service in the United States Army as surgeon, Maj. Shufeldt was equally well known as an author. Bom In New York in 1850, Maj. Shufeldt. son of Rear Admiral Robert W.

Shufeldt and Sarah Abercrombie Shufeldt, first began his fighting career during the Civil War, serving as cap- tain's clerk and signal officer aboard the United States Gunboat Proteus, commanded by his father. Educated in the public and private schools of this country and Havana, Cuba. Maj. Shufeldt was graduated from Cornell University in 1874. soon afterward coming io this city, where he began the study of medicine at the Columbian University Medical School, now George Washington University, He received his degree of M.

D. in 1876. Commissioned an assistant sur- i geon soon afterward in the Army, he was detailed first to Fort McHenry. Baltimore. and then to the frontier against the Sioux, Department of the Platte.

Scientific Papers. It was during this five-year detail that Maj. Shufeldt began his collections of the fauna and flora of the region and compiled his first scientific papers on the osteology of birds. In 1881 he served at the Army Medical Museum here, being appointed at the time as honorary curator of comparative anatomy of the Smithsonian In- stitution. where he added to his scientific collection. Retired as captain in 1891 for disability in the line of duty, and promoted to major in 1896 for his Civil War service. Maj. Shufeldt devoted himself to the study of art, anthropology. forensic medicine and biology, and wrote several books on the subjects.

His literary work was interrupted during the World War when, upon request, he resumed active duty on the staff of Surg. Gen. Gorgas. being assigned to the Army Medical Museum again. Cosmos Club Member.

Maj Shufeldt was a charter member of the Cosmos Club here, resigning in 1902 when he moved to New York, and was a founder of the American Union. He returned to Washington about 1910 and remained here the rest of his life. He is survived by his widow, his second wife, formerly of Christiania. Norway, and two children. Funeral services will be held in Fort Mver Chapel, Fort Myer.

Stricken with a heart attack during the morning service yesterday at St.

Church. Eighth street northeast, Henry Lewis Bryan, go, former "editor of at the State Department, died suddenly while singing one of his favorite hymns. Funeral services will be held at the church at 10 a.m. tomorrow with Interment at Rock Creek Church Cemetery. Mr.

Bryan for many years had been active in the church, was a vestryman, and had been treasurer, until retirement some time ago on aqpount of his heart trouble for months, but felt so well yesterday that, with Mrs. Bryan and a relative, he attended services yes teruay. Carried to Sacristy. When stricken during the singing of a hymn he was believed to have died instantly. Friends carried him to the sacristy of the church, an ambulance was called from Casualty Hospital, and Dr.

L. Rey pronounced death dtie to a heart attack. The body was taken direct to the family home, 604 East Capitol street. Mr. Bryan was bom In this city February 26, 1853, the son of Samuel and Harriett Bryan.

The family home was on Capitol Hill on property now included in the Capitol grounds. He received his education in Columbian College. now George Washington Universuyl and Georgetown University. From Georgetown he obtained the degree oi master of laws. His career in public life was long and varied.

He served as clerk to the Senate Committees of Finance and Judiciary and as private secretary to Secretary of State Bayard. He was the first secretary of the Bureau of American Republics, now the Pan-American Union: He also was secretary of the board of trustees, Philadelphia Commercial Museum. unn urir. January John H. McCooey, the big boaG of Brooklyn politics, is dead. He was the leader for almost a quar- ter of a century of the Democratic party in Brooklyn. He died yesterday at 69 from heart disease. Throughout his reign as Democratic boss, McCooey was a atanch supporter of Tammany Hall, and his death Is seen by political observers as the end of Tammany's domination of the Democratic party In New York City.

It is regarded as almost certain that he would be succeeded by a leader who is satisfactory to supporters of President Roosevelt and who will run the Brooklyn organisation as a part of the Democratic State organisation and not as an auxiliary to Tammany. Son of Shipbuilder. death came unexpectedly, although he had been tn poor health for more than two years. Despite his illness, he took an active part last Pall In the mayoral campaign, which resulted In the fusion victory of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and which saw McCooeVs prestige as leader reduced as a result of a stormy revolt by Brooklyn district leaders, who balked at supporting former Mayor John P. O'Brien.

Tammany candidate. McCooev managed to hold on to his command. however, although after the election there were reports that he would be replaced as Democratic chieftain McCooey was a jovial, ruddy-faced man, who up from the ranks of the Democratic orpani7ation In New York largest borough. He was the son of a shipbuilder and as a youth worked in shipyards in Chester. and Brooklyn.

By the time he was 23 he had taken an Interest In politics and become a party worker. At that time he was snnointed a superintendent of a post office substation, the first of a number of public offices he held for 42 years. National Committeeman. McCooey's affability, through which he came to know thou'ands of people, followed him through his career as he rose to district leader and finally boss' in the Fall of 1909. McCooey was a member of the Democratic National Committee. McCooey leaves his widow. Mrs Catherine MrCooey. to whom he was married in 1898: three sons and a daughter. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning Oov.

Herbert Lehman heads the list of honorary pallbearers, which also includes Postmaster General James A. Farley and Alfred E. Smith. The death of McCooey was seen by the New York Times as not only an aid to displacement of John F. Curry as head of Tammany, but the end.
