Newman writes fine songs. Rut he can't sing. This album proves that. Newman has a distinctive voice, but only in that it is mediocre. He manages to convey sincerity and honesty without any musical accomplishment.

As a result, all we have here is a fine songwriter playing simple, cute piano parts with sensitive lyrics that become nothing because of Ihe weak vocalist. "Last Night I Had A Dream," "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Dear" and "Political Science" are nice tunes, but they need a vocalist to give them a fair chance. They haven't been printed yet. The response to the Presley a earance announcement was so great, thai Orange Show Ticket Agency manager Bob Lewis felt he should start taking orders.

So the mail order format was implemented. Lewis said the tickets are being printed now and should be available for distribution in a couple of weeks. So until then, each mailed request will be filed according to when it was received. As soon as the tickets arrive. Lewis said they will be delivered in the envelopes which are required with each order.

The two performences, one Nov 12 at 5 p.m. and a second one the following evening at 8:30, will be reserved seat engagements. There will be no box office sale the night of the shows. The Sunday show has plenty of seats still available at all prices, $10, $7.50 and $5, Lewis said. There are also some seats available for the Monday show, which was the one originally scheduled.

A 50-cent handling charge should accompany each order. The reserved sealing arrangement means there will be only seats for each concert, instead of the usual 7,200 capacity that side balcony and standing room allows for rock concerts. But every seal will offer a good view of Elvis. CLOSE TO THE EDGE By Yes (Atlantic, SD 7244) Not since the Beatles did Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band has there been one side on an album that expressed such a complete and exciting a musical thought as side one of this release.

It is appropriate that the album is titled after this side, which includes four selections which are distinct only in style and character since the 19-niinutes of music includes four uninterrupted selections. "The Solid Time of Change" opens the work. It features Yes' distinctive vocal harmonies with a unique rhythm part in the background, pounding out a deep irregular base drum beat that is fascinating to hear. "Total Mass Retain'' follows, featuring the group's exciting tight vocal harmonies. "Get Up, Get Down" is the third movement and probably the most interesting 885-1731 SHOW STARTS AT DUSK $2.

Season after season, the dashing Cossacks sing their musical journeys across the land, winning new fans, pleasing old ones with their stirring music making. Sometime this season the Cossacks will sing their American concert and 500th Canadian. The Cossacks, all of them, are now American citizens.

The chorus has only missed one performance, probably a unique record in show business. This schedule also represents more than 800,000 miles of travel, under extreme weather condition. Their program here will be a varied one. including liturgical music, folksongs, love songs, Cossack battle songs and dances, and a group of English songs. In addition, they will present the authentic dances of the Cossack regiments, national dances and the thrilling Cos-8 a sword dance, "Lezginka." Iani Long, USC fine arts graduate and student at University of Rome. Soundings tune on the side. It opens with a soft, echo affect, on the harmonizing voices. Then each of the three singers Jon Anderson, Steve Howe and Chris Squire carefully trade solos with a dream-like organ sound and a melodious bass clarinet part in the background. Rick Wakeman then joins in with a powerful organ sound that dominates until a vocal solo takes over again for a soft, sensitive stanza.

The trade-off between the huge organ sound and the soft vocal gives a definitive contrast to the "up" and "down" feelings of the tune. The final selection brings it all together, with a reprise of some of the earlier melodies included in the final work. The side shows the excellence of Yes as it has been heard before, as well as a new sophistication. The group has learned to vary the style of its vocal harmonies, adding softness and a light touch to the already exciting depth and richness it had previously achieved with volume. As a result Yes is a more complete group, capable of adding texture to even an uninspiring song, such as on the second side of this release.

Side two features selections, one with three movements and a. closing song tailed "Siberian Khat-tru." "Cord of Life," the opening selection, features Howe on acoustic guitar singing a splendid lyric "Eclipse" is worth hearing because of another excellent vocal job the group does. At the end of "Khatru" the 3-part harmony is used like a rhythm instrument, with the group showing off a bit justifiably so. achieved with volume, a rhy-them instrument, with the Close To the Edge is an excellent, album which shows Yes as a sophisticated musical group that is just reaching full potential.
