How will it affect the game and players? Will it make any difference to the spectator? Six coaches were asked these questions by The News and all agreed that the new regulations would be good for the game They were 100 per cent in favor with some slight modifications suggested for the future The new foul rule calls for a second free throw on common fouls (violations when a player is fouled NOT in the act of shooting) in the first 37 minutes of a player makes the first attempt good A miss on the first attempt puts the ball back in play By taking out the quarters the committee has made the game a full 40 minute affair The old rule of two shots at the basket when a player is fouled in the act of shooting and on any violation in the last three minutes remains Here are the observations of the coaches surveyed: 4 surveyed: Now's the time to get out of your heavy clothing and into a lightweight Spring weave suit It will lighten your step give you the new outlook of the lighter wayofdiving and working It has the fine tailored look wonderful fit and hangs out wrinkles overnight Spring into a Springweave for that grand feeling Spring through Fall OUR BOOKS ARE CLOSED Pay Va May 1041699 Pay 11 June Pay 1i July 10-31701 Sales Tax Included SEE THESE OTHER "PALM BEACH" FAVORITES Complete Stock Palm Beach FashlonMers $3290 Palm Beach RESORTWEAVE Sport Coati $32380 Palm Beach SLACKS Nubby texture MU 290 240 L96 Bob Ortiz the muscular rad Cuban who played outfield for the Hornets once upon a time broke his arm in Havana and will be out of the Cuban lineup for six weeks Phil Homer has such faith in Cal Ermer's Chattanooga club that he bet a 'Nooga writer a $50 suit against a $5 hat that the Lookouts would win the Southern Association pennant Bobby Beal the Lincolnton Class warhorse is mulling over the idea of quitting baseball Wben Connie Marrero his cigar-puffing Cuban walked in a run the other day Bucky Harris chided the 43-year-old pitcher: "Whatsa matter with you you old-timer you got no control?" Said Marrero: "Pretty soon control" Then he explained the mel lowing of a pitcher's control: "Dwandy (20) year-old no control thirdy-year-old no control fody-year-old leedle bit control year-old strike-strike-strike!" 'I like the no-quarters deal I think that in the future it may be advisable to give a team an extra instead of to give another rest period My suggestion would be three timeouts a half" MURRAY GREASON WAKE "The new free throw rule will cut down on profit fouling something we've needed You won't foul to gain possession of the ball You'll certainly be careful who you foul especially the good shooters when the full value of a field goal two points can be earned "The new rule on no quarters won't hurt the game However an extra timeout may be worth considering" JIM HAMILTON LENOIR RHYNE new rules are good The foul rule benefits the boy who is proficient It is a positive rule now "I like no quarters too It will eliminate stalling which had become at least three minutes of a 40 minute game You will miss two jump balls but If you have a big man the other team will still be at a disadvantage off the boards" HAL BRADLEY time we helped the foul shooters It will increase scoring I think I like both regulations and think the fans will like them That's who we play the game for anyway "With no quarters the fans get another break I don't think we need a rest period" BANKS McFADDEN CLEMSON "The new free throw rule will encourage good basketball It will bring careful accurate shooting back Players have had a tendency to relax under the old rule Now you will shoot well at first or the ball is in play If you do you're rewarded "I think the quarters in basketball have changed the game These new rules might be carried out for the whole 40 minutes rather than lust 37 Make it a 40 minute contest "The elimination of the quarter may hurt the jump ball situation somewhat "I think the next step is to help the defensive player more We need to protect him for I feel the rules still favor the man with the ball" On the agenda next year?
