musician and lecturer will return to the Tuesday Clubhouse Thursday at 8:30 pm to deliver the Sacramento Opera Guild's annual operalog devoted in this case to Bellini's "I Puritani" Open to the public the event is in preparation for the San Francisco Opera Company's new production of the work which the guild will sponsor in the Memorial Auditorium Oct 5 with the renowned soprano Joan Sutherland as the star Tickets will be available at the door for for adults and 50 cents for students Popper who illustrates his discussions by delivering excerpts from the opera at the piano is a professor of music and head of the opera department at the University of California at Los Angeles He has also been called in to set up similar workshops on other campuses including that of Tokyo University A native of Czechoslovakia he came to America at the outbreak Jan Popper of World War II and won his first national attention as head of the opera workshop at Stanford University Puritani" first performed in 1835 was Bellini's last opera It is seldom performed because not many singers in modern times have been able to handle its spectacular vocal lines MARINE members of the United States Marine Band which frequently plays at White House functions and at government ceremonies in Washington DC will play a pair of concerts in Sacramento on Oct 20 The 168-year-old band on tour for the 75th year wears red uniforms which date from Colonial times The band is led by Lt Col Albert Schoepper The Capital City appearances are sponsored by the Luther Burbank Music Boosters group which is selling the tickets The Luther Burbank High School auditorium will be the scene of the concerts SF Opera Season Will Open With 'I Puritanr Group Will Promote Advanced Music at 8 pm with Glossop singing Rodrigo Saturday a new production of Richard Strauss' "Elektra" will be unveiled at 8 pm with the Spanish soprano Enriqueta Tarres making her American debut "Puritani" will be repeated Friday at 8 pm The San Francisco Opera Company will open its longest season Tuesday at 8:15 pm in the Opera House with Bellini's "1 Puritani" starring Joan same production to be given in the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Oct 5 under Sacramento Opera Guild sponsorship The opening week will see 14 singers making their San Francisco or American debuts among them the Spanish tenor Alfredo Kraus who activities of the New Music Ensemble of the University of California at Davis for the last two years will have a Sacramento platform this season in a concert series sponsored by a new organization
