Anything Goes Irma La Douce South Pacific and West Side Story' are available at the Civic Theater box office ktnA Jk A Russell Arms and Ruta Lee New Music Ensemble Will Debut At UCD With World Premieres Russell Arms who has scored previously with Music Circus audiences and Ruta Lee a singing and dancing performer seen often these days in movies and on television will join the popular Oliver Cliff in leading roles when the Music Circus presents Irma La Douce in a week's run starting August 5th The Gallic comedy a cheerful tongue in cheek combination of sly humor and genuine romance is the 8th in the series of 10 professional shows being presented by Lewis and Young in the tent at 15th and Streets The producers stressed the fact that the stage play bears little resemblance to the new movie of the same name which uses none of the music of the original and features a drastically different storyline Irma La Douce a hit in Paris England and New York is the story of a pretty and somehow innocent Parisian cocotte the young student who falls in love with her and the wise and humorous tavern owner who acts as both a participant in the action and narrator Miss Lee a newcomer to the Music Circus was last seen on a Northern California stage a couple of seasons ago as Ellie in the Edwin Lester production of Show Boat A native of Canada she was educated at convent schools in Montreal and Los Angeles where she also attended UCLA She broke into show business through television and has since made some 500 appearances in major network dramatic shows The movies cast her as one of the Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and she has been in SHERMAN CLAY music ipecialisls for 93 year new areas of contemporary music The concert will end with a nod in the direction of Charles Ives who was pioneering new sounds in American music a half century ago The ensemble will perform his Scherzo (Over The Pavements) dated 1906-1913 The players will be Austin Rosen Swift Lunetta trombonist Donald Brewer pianist Adrienne Casielian harpist Sylvia Hoffman saxophonist Jon Gibson piccolo player Barbara Johnson reed and vibraphone player Wayne Johnson bassist Jerry Lopes and reed player Arthur Woodbury A large variety of instruments will be used Students will be admitted free the general public at 50 cents Never before such a portable An extraordinary program of modern chamber music including four world premieres and two west coast premieres will be offered by the New Music Ensemble in Freeborn Hall at the University of California at Davis at 8:15 PM Wednesday July 31st It will also mark the premiere performance of the ensemble which is described by its spokesman UCD composer and faculty member Larry Austin as more an idea than a group of performers "The idea" Austin said "is to perform significant contemporary chamber musi whatever is instrumental to explore new composing and pcifoiming techniques and to develop a concept of group improvisation "In frequent rehearsals over 11 J3 as this!
