UCD Harpsichord Will Make Debut i harpsichord (and celesta) flute oboe (and English horn) bassoon (and contrabassoon) trumpet vibraphone and string bass "Continuum" is an essay in what Austin calls "the relative motion of sounds in time" using quarter tones and unconventionally produced instrumental sounds Rosen describes his work as a "long rather free and rhapsodic piece the performer is called upon to improvise on material previously given him and is more than usually responsible for details of phrasing and proportion" Swift's composition is one in which the harpsichord is employed and 18th Centuries was acquired through special funds for new instruments granted by UC President Clark Kerr The funds also provided a large vibraphone celesta contrabassoon and English horn all of which will be inaugurated at the concert The program will include the Sonata for flute oboe cello and harpsichord by one of America's leading composers Elliott Carter and three new works by members of the Davis faculty Continuum by Larry Austin Sonata for harpsichord by Jerome Rosen and Bucolics by Richard Swift Harpsichordist for the Research Concert will be Marvin Tartak bay area concert pianist and harpsichordist who has appeared several times on the Davis campus Other performers for the concert will be Jean Cunningham flute Helen Stross cello Bruce Haynes oboe Alice 01-sen contrabassoon Stanley Lunetta percussion Arthur Woodbury bassoon Morton Subotnick clarinet Linn Su-botnick viola Theodore Karp oboe Austin trumpet and Swift celesta Austin's work is for seven players and was
