was possible on the stage the producer and director Hal Wallis and Peter Glenville respectively have fashioned a spectacle-costume drama that falls smack on the hyphen between the two Actually the play of Anottith is More suited to the stage than to the screen- it being in large part conversational packed with verbal irony and wit and without any definite By Bosley Crowther vA York Times news serNir4 VTIIEN Laurence Olivier managed to turn Shakespeare's Henry into one of the most magnificent and certainly the most literate spectacle film ever made he fittingly set up a standard of excellence in the spectacle genre that more ambitious and intelligent film makers have been shooting At ever since There isn't the slightest question that William Wyler made Ben Hur with a sensitive awareness and respect for the literate quality of the film of his friend Olivier and his picture unquestionably showed it Ben Hur was one: of the best with a script that 'owed much to the attentions of Christopher invitation to action drama as is in Henry It tells of the impassioned personal conflict between England's king and his chancellor and pal Thomas Becket who became the cruelest thorn in his side when he was made the archbishop of Canterbury and switched allegiance to the church Although this was one of the most crucial personal conflicts in English history embraced in the centuries long struggle for power between crown and church and engaged in by two strong minded and practical men Anouilh chose to present it as a petulant squabble between a playboy kinr who is Sore at being neglected and his old friend who has found a new liege in God And this is the "human interest" level to which it is confined on the screen made a noble try but they have snagged on the horns of the dilemma of the literate spectacle A roma mendous depth and scope which indeed might be brilliantly enacted within the frame of a spectacle film And because Wallis Glenville and their writer Edward Milan have stayed with the literate effort of Anouilh and have not expanded it much beyond the padding of some fine 12th Century settings and ecclesiastical pageantry their comparatively small and personal drama tends to run down in its almost three hour length In short they have evidently aimed for the contours of a Henry without the solid building material of a Battle of Agincourt They have tried to push a costume drama into the range of a spectacle without the incidents of physical action that would give it pictorial excitement and dramatic drive They cannot be criticised severely for they have On this level it does permit a nimble and often touching play of wits and thrusts between a sensitive eccentric monarch and a man of passionate conscience and resolve And Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton play these two men superlatively with all sorts of flashing intimations of their pleasures and agonies But it is still a comparatively shallow and historically inadequate reckoning of a religio-political conflict of tre New Music Group Makes Recording The New Music Ensemble at the University of California at Davis which has attracted considerable attention for its pioneering went into the making of Lawrence Of Arabia and yes Cleopatra Whether' the effort at combining literacy and 'spectacle worked to the fullest satisfaction in each instance is open to question of course but the point is the fellows lave been striving for distinction and intelligence in their scripts in the knowledge that this is necessary to please sophisticated audiences today The only danger' with this is that the writing the development of dramas of ideas may tend to result in too much scotching of the always essential spectacle An instance in which this happens I'm afraid is the film that has
