One way to save money in the supermarket is simply to pick out the cheapest variety of each item on your shopping list Another is to calculate ounces and pounds per dollar or to look for bargains in "nutrient value" and calories But assuming you're not a mathematician and you neither want nor need to sacrifice quality how else can you save on food shopping? HERE FROM UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT of Agri- culture food economists are solid answers: 1 Shop for supermarket specials Meats are most often advertised as specials but there are many others too If you build your menus around them you'll save 6 to 10 per cent or more during the year You will save even more if you load UP your freezer with specials particularly in meats this summer 2 Look for the seasonal bargains In fruits the biggest bargains this summer will be apples cherries and pears lemons and strawberries are to be in short supply and higher priced In vegetables bargains will include beans cucumbers peppers carrots and while bad weather and other conditions will make non bargains out of cabbage lettuce cauliflower and asparagus Other plentiful foods will be eggs and dairy products The most obvious non bargain in the months just ahead will be you don't get it on a special offer Top grade beef prices are the highest since early 1963 Pork is at its most expensive since 1958 and lamb is at its costliest in 13 cutbacks at the farm level in response to declining prices to farmers Poultry is the exception in the meat price pattern and it will continue to be a real bargain this more than the same amount in a large package But often the cost of ingredients to prepare something at home may be more than the pre packaged convenient if staples are left over 4 When you buy meat consider the amount of bone gristle and fat you're getting plus the weight you will lose in cooking it plus the amount of protein it may contain A day's worth of protein costs 93 cents if you buy it in pork roast but only 45 cents if you buy it in the form of hamburger Big nutrient bargains today include beef lamb liver eggs and fish 5 Don't buy bread and cereals by size Buy instead by weight and food value The biggest loaf of bread may have the biggest volume of air as well 6 Weigh the cost of choosing a supermarket The least expensive supermarket in your area may not be the cheapest for you if you have to drive twice the distance to reach it 7 Consider the size of your family whenever you buy milk packages The "family economy size" may give you more food per dollar but it's no bargain if it is designed for a family larger than yours and you end up throwing out a lot of leftovers bankruptcy or receivership or being reorganized under the Bankruptcy Act or securities assumed by such corn the food price tags you'll see this summer get and keep this key point straight in your mind: The rate of increase in our spending dollars in recent years has been far greater than the rate of increase in our food costs and as a result food now takes an average record low of only 185 per cent of our take home pay Distributed 1965 by The Hall Svndicate Inc Dan River 1 Co 40b Day PL 116 Deere
