SANTA MONICA (UPI) Actor James Dunn, who staged one of the most spectacular comebacks in Hollywood history with his Academy Award winning performance in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," died Friday at Santa Monica Hospital. He was 61. Hospital officials disclosed the death yesterday and said the stage, screen and television actor had been ill for several; months, lie was admitted to the! hospital for surgery to remove) a stomach obstruction. Dunn's performance as the! drunken father in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" in 1954 won him an Oscar for best supporting actor and marked the end of a five-year period in which he had not faced a camera.

Dunn became one of the hottest profiles in the film capital in the 1930s, then lapsed into virtual obscurity after drawing one bad part after another. Fickle Hollywood let him again drop into lesser movies after the award-winning perfor mance but he didn't let that bother him. To those who sug gested the Oscar might have been a jinx, he replied, "they ought to take a look at my bank account. In a 1934 movie, Eyes," Dunn sang one of Hollywood's sweetest songs, "On the Good Ship Lollipop," tft child star Shirley Temple. Other film credits included "'Sob Sister," "Handle With Care," "Stand Up and Cheer," The Daring Young Man," The Payoff," "Welcome Home," "Living on Love," '(Pride of the Navy," and -Hold That Woman." Among his stage appearances was as star of "Harvey" on Broadway.

'Dunn, son of a prominent stock broker, was born in New York City on Nov. 2, 1905, and spent much of his early life in suburban new Rochelle.
