SATURDAY, AUGUST 28, 1999, THE HERALD 5E Presale prices way out for space auction Perhaps the most poignant object is the notebook (pre-sale estimate: $15,000 to $20,000) kept by Gus Grissom, who died with crew mates Ed White and Roger Chaffee in a fire inside their Apollo 1 spacecraft at the launch pad on Jan. 27, 1967. In fact, about half of the lots come from an anonymous collector who was an engineer for 10 years, working for one of the subcontractors for NASA, Austin said. Many other items have been offered by former astronauts or their estates. Perhaps the most poignant object is the notebook (presale estimate: $15,000 to $20,000) kept by Gus Grissom, who died with crew mates Ed White and Roger Chaffee in a fire inside their Apollo 1 spacecraft at the launch pad on Jan.

27, 1967. While the notebook cites numerous glitches with the spacecraft, they were minor things kinks you would expect to be worked out, said Austin. Theres nothing in the notebook that is foreshadowing the final disaster. 1 I Still, he acknowledged, the notebook, which was passed on to Schirra to help in his training, has an iconic value independent of its technical contents. By KARIN UPSON Newsday NEW YORK Space buffs who want to launch into collecting should be happily in orbit come Sept.

18, when Christie's auction house in Manhattan holds a sale devoted to memorabilia from the major U.S. and Russian space missions of the past 40 years. The more than 300 lots include such cosmic collectibles as a space suit fitted for Neil Armstrong who in July 1969 took his historic one small step; a NASA emblem coated with lunar dust from the 1971 Apollo 15 mission, and a communications headset worn by Buzz Aldrin, Armstrongs fellow moon-walker in the Apollo 1 1 mission. There are also flight and mission plans and operations manuals, many of them acquired from those who staffed the U.S. space programs.

Presale price estimates range from about $600 (for a Gemini VI flight plan signed by astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom DYING: Bruno Ganz (with Achilleas Eternity and a Day. Skevis) spends his last day in organized the sale. Time gives you a perspective on any historical event. Man venturing beyond Earth, space exploration itself, will be one of the things people remember about the 20th Century 500 years from now. But it takes time for that to show, and 30 years is the first stop.

The Christies sale, and its pre-auction exhibit (Sept. 12-17), will probably attract people who worked in some capacity on the program, or who were really interested in it, but tooK that a step further to try to collect something from it. said Austin. Stafford) all the way to $250,000. That top estimate has been garnered not by an American item, but one from Russia: a prototype of the world's first orbital space suit, worn by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who in 1961 beat the Americans to become the first man in space.

The timing may be just right for the liftoff, so to speak, of space-exploration artifacts as a lively collecting area. This year was the 30th anniversary of the lunar landing, said Richard Austin, head of Christies books and manuscripts department, which Eternity's endurance leaves dying writers last day unforgettable and image. Angelopoulos has a novelists love of language. His characters utter lines and words like poets in the coffeehouse spotlight. Strange obtuse symbols fill the frames.

Fellini had his dwarves; Angelopoulos provides cyclists in yellow slickers peddling slowly and ghostly refugees dangling from a wired encampment. Do they mean something, or is this just a dying man drinking in everything? Unlike Fellini, however, there is no underlying joke, no bright joy bubbling in the dark pool, no sexy beauties on the beach. Laughter almost doesnt exist two girls giggle fleeing rain on the beach and smiles come so rarely they seem to hurt. Alexandre shambles about with death and regret hanging as heavily on him as his dark cloak of an overcoat. He leans over his dying mother and muses, Why must we rot helplessly, torn between pain and desire? This is not light stuff.

But if Alexandre doesnt find the answer to that question, he does finally come to a reconciliation that ultimately makes Eternity and a Day a lesson more about living than dying. MOVIE REVIEW ETERNITY AND A DAY (unrated) Cast: Bruno Ganz, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Isabelle Renauld, Achilleas Skevis. Director-screenwriter: Theo Angelopoulos. Producer Phoebe Economopoulos. Running time: 132 minutes. Adult themes. Miami-Dade only: The Cosford Theater. In Greek with English subtitles. e-mail: cmorganherald.com By CURTIS MORGAN Herald Staff Writer Eternity and a Day, winner of the Palm DOr at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, is to say the least challenging.

A dreamlike, deeply melancholy melange of meditations on death, life, loss, love, language and creativity sprinkled with social and political commentary about Greek life, it ruminates on all of the proceedings at a pace that can feci like eternity and several days. That said, director Theo Ange-lopoulos whose works rarely play outside of film festivals in the United States also creates remarkable moments of rare illumination. This is an enigmatic and evocative film, full of fascinating contrasts, among them this: You cant wait for it to be over, then you cant forget it. Eternity and a Day is an intensely personal odyssey, a journey through the last day in the life of a dying Greek writer, Alexandre (Bruno Ganz, best known for Wim Wenders Wings of Desire). While closing his beach house, he comes across a letter from his beloved late wife, Anna (Isabelle Renauld) about one beautiful day there.

Her wistful words send him on a day of intense reflection, the poet ruefully discovering that his lifelong search for elusive words distanced himself from love he could easily have embraced. He drifts in and out of the past, encountering a variety of characters along the way a top-hatted Italian poet whose unfinished work Alexandre has struggled to complete; a window-washing waif of a refugee nearly ensnared in a child-selling ring. In style, Eternity and a Day evokes a Greek Fellini, perhaps owing to Angelopoulos writing collaboration with Tonino Guerra, who also worked with the great Italian director. Plot, defiantly nonlinear and often confounding, isnt nearly as important as mood Hey Also, get a color cover with the purchase of a Nokia 5120 Introducing Our Newest Digital Price Plan. $1 095 wJLmJr per month Includes Unlimited Nights And Weekends.
