Kadte-TV Editor A fight before the Federal Communications Commission loomed Friday as two UHF television stations announced they had asked the commission to standardize the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area as an all-UHF area The petition was filed by the Storer Broadcasting Co owners of Station WGBS-TV (Channel 23) and Gerico Investment Co owners of Station WITV (Channel 17) If the FCC were to agree to such a plan all present and future TV stations here would op- erate In the UHF (ultra high frequency) band rather than under the present double-standard system with some on UHF and the others on VHF (very high frequency) George Storer president of the Storer firm and Russell Lowell president of Gerico stated jointly: proposal should be welcomed by the South Florida public because it will mean more and better television service for ev- But Mitchell Wolfson co-owner of WTVJ at present only VHF station called the UHF proposal and we will fight it with every means at our command both to protect the public and our own The Storer-Lowell statement contended Florida is uniquely ideal for UHF television because pf its flat terrain and the constant green foliage of its trees a condition
