PAGE EIGHT— A HERALD TIIIFHONI 3-4411 THE HERALD MIAMI FLORIDA HERALD TILIPSONI 3-4411 THURSDAY OCTOBER 19 1939 MOVIES A1SD MOVIE MAKERS Film Musical Field Day For Mickey and Judy Babes In Arms'" Has Just About Everything "U-Boat 29" Is Timely Feature At Lincoln By CHARLES E WARD Herald Amusement Editor MICKEY ROONEY and Judy Garland go to town in "Babes In Arms" film musical that has just about everything Based on the successful Broadway musical the film has lavish scenes elaborate song and dance numbers and a plausible narrative to string it together Story is that of the passing of vaudeville and the efforts of a number of old-timers to revive itO !Vhen they fail their children come to the rescue with a smash hit The staging of the youngsters' how provides Mickey with a jchance to have a field day and Judy "is right in step Versatile young Ttooney writes the revue directs rehearsals puts on the finished product with himself as star and still has time for romance with Judy Climax is a number with Mickey Impersonating- F D R and addressing his remarks to "my frans" While Judy sits nearby and in turn describes "my day" to the audience Charles Winninger and Grace Paves appear as Mickey's parents and Guy Kibbee takes the role of the judge June Preisser plays Baby Rosalie the ex-baby screen star ami Betty Jaynes joins Judy Gar-' land in some fancy singing - All in all it's topflight entertainment You can see it at the Paramount Scapa Flow as the U-boat in the picture manages to run the mine field successfully in practically the same locale — the Orkney islands The picture shows how it could be and undoubtedly was done thereby making the actual fact seem less fantastic The film is certainly a cut above the usual spy pictures since it isn't stuffed with weird creatures and weird methods and for those who like their thrills there's a submarine and passenger boat sinking 'U-Boat 29" Timely - The timeliness of "U-Boat 29 is Indisputable As I came out of the Lincoln Theater where it is showing Jhe newsboys were shouting "Three hundred saved from sinking thip" an all too realistic sequel to a picture given over almost entirely to the subject of naval warfare as the title suggests "U-Boat 29" is an English picture with an English cast and supposedly based on an incident of the World war It isn't a propaganda film nor evert -a war horror picture It relates the complex mechanics of espionage and counter espionage and sets out to show that battles are frequently won in dignified halls Of Scotland Yard The inevitable woman spy though incidentally not beautiful is played by Valerie Hobson The German TJ-boat captain is creditably done by Conrad Veidt and the handsome Scotland Yard exponent is Sebastian Shaw - The picture is particularly interesting at the moment because of the recent sinking of the Royal Oak at TODAY FRI and SAT ml WAi-TIK PIDGEON VI MINI A BRUCE UO CARWU0 EtorftCIANNOlJ n ism program Andy Clyde fit "NOT GUILTY
