Imperils Tachens Chain TAIPEK Formosa Chinese Red forces invaded Yikiangshan Island Tuesday behind a curtain of bombs and naval and artillery fire placing the Tachens Islands eight miles to the south in great peril Fears rose that the Tachens 200 miles north of Formosa are next on the Red timetable as the Peiping radio trumpeted that tiny Yikiangshan was In less than two hours of fighting The defense ministry however insisted that the garrison still was putting up resistance late Tuesday night and claimed the invaders suffered heavy losses The ministry said the thin line of guerrilla defenders of Yikiangshan a rocky island of little more than three square miles sank six motorized junks and one gunboat of invasion fleet and damaged another gunboat It added that gronnd fire shot down two Russian-made planes Throughout the day Nationalist warplanes from Formosa flew over the area harassing the invasion fleet The air force claimed two Red warships were damaged in dive bombing attacks The Red Chinese air force swarming down from a network of bases little more than 100 miles north of the Tachens opened the battle for Yikiangshan Tuesday morning In the covering force of
