Why not a fat society? A place where they can be studied like ants A spot where they can be taught the evils of calories A place for scientific research into why fat boys diet twice a year yet gain it all back A Fat Institute of America! Here I could feed them scientific scare them with such facts as: For every pound of fat you add you add also one mile of extra blood vessels for the heart to pump blood through If you are 40 pounds overweight you have 40 extra miles -of pipes for the old heart to pump the nectar of life through! scare the suet off them No medicines No exercise Just knowledge of what happens when you are too fat Then real information on how to the fat! YES SIR feed my pack of fatsos with knowledge such as: Rule 1: make Dieting a Guessing Game If you have to guess what is in food you are apt to get a caloric punch in the bread basket you expect Eating a gamble You can guess wrong too often too late Rule 2: Fight Fat With Knowledge You can remove the guess and gamble out of what to eat with knowledge Knowhow Looking at a smor gasbord and knowing you can eat caviar (25 'calories) lobster (75) halibut and -not knock yourself oat Rule 3: Form the Habit of NOT eating Since eating is a habit why not form a habit of NOT eating? Simple logic? But how? Showing them low caloried foods might work until they get back on their feet Analysing a true dyed-in-the-wool fatso is interesting There must be some 57 varieties but here are a few: TORPEDO TYPE: He has a pot belly his sole distinguishing claim for the fat boy award A belly like the warhead on a i submarine missle PENGUIN: He waddles as he walks His legs are short like pier pilings His body is long and has the general aspect of a pillbox on the Maginot line People scatter when he meets them on sidewalks RAZORBACK: So named for his resemblance to that breed of Arkansas hog His legs are long and slender his back lean But from his jowls down he is 6olid suet DIAMOND JIM BRADY: The really all fat He calls it muscles STEAMER TRUNK DER-RIERES: Heavy big fellow Six foot of food and on the rear mainly From too much sitting Tomorrow: Elmer tells WHAT to eat instead ot what NOT to eat FAT BOY Elmer Wheeler found "dieting was simplified when he used his special Fat Boy thermometer as an program highlight by anti-corruption measures to clean up state government and put it in pie was laid down here Tuesday by Dan McCarty as he became 31st governor Some 7500 sun-drenched spec-tators saw the tall slender man from Fort Pierce solemnly take the oath of office on a flag-bedecked platform overlooking the west lawn of the capitol grounds greatest' hour of triumph came when outgoing Gov Fuller Warren handed over to him the great seal of state moments before nearby factory whistles' blew their noon-hour blasts McCarty became governor at 11:50 a Chief Justice Harold Sebring of the Florida Supreme court administered the oath The partisan McCarty throng roared its approval And they followed it with bursts of applause when he announced the official policies of his administration He made no direct attack on the outgoing Warren administration but there was no mistaking his pointed meaning when he declared: want us to have a good government housecleaning The kind all good housekeepers know they should have at home from tima to time This mean that all the furniture and furnishings should be broken up and thrown out the window But it does mean a good airing out and that the dirt and rust and corrosion if there is any must The words if there is were not in the prepared text of the inaugural address McCarty spoke them on the spur of the moment a conciliatory gesture which somewhat softened the bitterness between the in-coming and out-going administrations Warren had defeated McCarthy to the torrid gubernatorial campaign of 1948 Feeling had run at higher fever pitch then than at any time to Florida history save the Smathers-Pepper campaign for the Senate in 1950 McCarty stuck to his final salvo unmistakably aimed at the Warren administration am determined that ours will be an administration not of brass or tinkling not one tainted with he declared rather ours must be an administration of sound accomplishment by men and women of high principle inspired in their work by a firm faith in the future of Florida Together with Gold's help we shall Other key points in the inaugural address were: No new taxes except on dog tracks Immediate dismissal or sus- brilliant sun shone down from a clear sky here Tuesday as Dan McCarty took the oath as 31st governor 1 At the version of this same impressive ceremony four years ago ominous clouds hung over the scene and there was a spattering of cold rain There were not a few politically stormy scenes here' abouts in the intervening years Only an estimated 7500 saw this ceremony as against a jam-packed mob of four years ago that may have run as high as 20000 But that's just the wSy the head man this time wanted it asked for as restrained a show as possible under the circumstances what he got It was neat but no gaudy It was serious and dignified and so punctual that the statewide radio schedule Was thrown out of gear They expected it to run about 20 minutes behind schedule as it always has Instead it was on the button on the timing As the result the administration of Gov McCarty will be longer than that of any chief executive in recent years 10 minutes longer He was sworn in at 11:50 a instead of the traditional high noon 9 i There were a few unscheduled smiles in the otherwise solemn ceremony The broadest came when quite inappropriately the organist selected the wedding march Love You as the music for' the side by side entrance of outgoing Gov Fuller Warren and Gov McCarty They fought each other bitterly when Warren won in 1948 and the Warren administration was a prime target as McCarty came back to win to 1952 But the outgoing governor was a good sport about it through the ceremony He was first on his feet and loudest in his applause when the new governor arose to make his speech And to his own farewell speech he departed from the text to credit McCarty with starting the ball rolling as a House member to 1937 for getting cattle off the highway chore finally finished to the
