QUESTION: What is the origin of the Appaloosa horse? * * * ANSWER: The Appaloosa or spotted horse has sometimes been called the "Raindrop Horse" because of its spots. Appaloosas are distinguished by a polka dot spattering, an eye encircled by white, a muddy mottled pink and gray skin beneath the coat and hooves colored with vertical black and white striping. The Appaloosa is of Oriental origin. It made its initial appearance in Japan, China, India and Persia. It is thought that this horse came to Europe about 800 B.C. through the Etruscan migration to Italy. Later, horses of Appaloosa coloration entered Europe with the army of Alexander the Great. At the beginning of the Renaissance, the breed was popular in Europe and there was a concentration in Spain. The Spanish brought these spotted horses to Mexico. Thence they traveled northward to the frontier lands of the United States and were successfully bred by an enterprising Indian tribe, the Nez Perce Indians of Idaho. These superior breeders produced lofty, elegant horses and they lived in the vicinity of the Palouse River from which comes the name Appaloosa. 4-16 (Jill Creager of Waynesboro, Pa., wins a prize for this question.
