Chamber leaves discounts for elderly up to stores Section Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1976 The Sun-Telegram, San Bernardino, Calif. Children's education includes tooth care pageant, noted the chamber's investment was "money well spent and we appreciate the support you have given us." The chamber also decided to investigate further a possible role in encouraging residents to install smoke detection devices that sound a warning in case of house fires. The city building and safety department sent the chamber information on models which would cost about $40 if ordered in quantity. Sewall, pointing out the chamber would not be competing with local merchants, said one approach would be to encourage residents to buy the devices from members' stores, such as hardware or appliance outlets.

Walker said a better avenue might be to refer the idea to local service clubs, but Sewall said chamber sponsorship would generate "visibility" and goodwill for the chamber. At the suggestion of director James Boggess, of Beaver Medical (Continued on 1) said. "The merchants tell us the volume makes up for the discounts allowed." Stores participating in the program, called "Community Concern for Senior Citizens," would receive an emblem for a display window and would be listed in a brochure available to eligible customers. In other business, the board allocated $300 from reserves to the Miss Redlands Pageant, an increase over last year's assistance of about $150. Rick Clark, executive director of the sponsoring Miss Redlands Affiliation, said rising costs this year have made it necessary to seek additional aid.

The auditorium rental has been increased, as well as the franchise fee, he said. Chamber manager Sam Sewall said the chamber employs Miss Red-lands in many official functions, which draws attention to the community. Clark, who said plans for next year include week-long activities to capitalize on the REDLANDS Information on a retail discount plan for senior citizens will be passed on to local merchants, but the chamber of commerce declined to endorse the concept Monday. "This is an appropriate decision to be made by each owner or manager," President Harold E. Walker said in suggesting the program outlined by Jennie Lee be reviewed in the chamber newsletter.

In taking a neutral stance on the matter, the board followed a recommendation of the executive committee last week. Walker explained, "if we endorse senior discounts, we'll be asked to endorse discounts for students, and so on." Lee, a Red Cross volunteer, said some San Bernardino stores are participating the program, which gives senior citizens with a MediCal card discounts ranging from 10 to 20 per cent, an amount decided upon by the merchant himself. "If we had a program in Redlands, we could keep the senior citizens here," she That's easy. It's part of a dental health program, now in its third year. REDLANDS A formal dinner dance is scheduled Friday by the Redlands and San Gorgonio Pass shrine clubs for the official joint visitation of Al Malaikah Shrine Temple Potentate Kenneth H. Boucher. The visitation also marks the formal introduction of the two clubs' officers to the potentate and executives of the temple. Cochairmen of the event, to be held at Griswold's Country House in Redlands, are Roswell "Ross" M. Miller, president of the Red-lands Shrine Club, and C.

S. Hill, president of the San Gorgonio Pass Shrine Club. In accepting the two clubs invitation for an official visitation, Boucher said the units are among the more active clubs in the eight-county Southern California region under his jurisdiction. Redlands School District to have a dental health program," Baker explained. Pointing around the small area partitioned off from the rest of the classroom, she said, "Everything here is provided and paid for by the university, not by the school district." She said, however, that various companies do donate such items as toothbrushes, dental floss and special fluoride toothpaste.

"We have a basic set-up without the district having to provide anything but the classroom." Baker's job, from 8:30 to 3:15 p.m. five days a week, is to teach children how to clean their teeth properly. "If they have plaque (food material and bacteria that build up on the teeth) I show them and tell them they're not brushing properly." While she speaks, a little girl in a long dress enters the room and hands her a worn out toothbrush. Baker reaches into a cardboard container and hands her a new one. "It's an incentive program to keep them brushing their teeth," she explains as the girl leaves the room.

"I've found the program very interesting I didn't think the children would be as interested as they are," she said. Children in grades one through six are eligible for the program and must have their parent's permission in writing. Baker teaches five children at a time for about 15 minutes per session. "It's amazing how readily they learn; they're very receptive and take pride and work hard at brushing at home before they come in." The enthusiasm some youngsters have in the program is evident in handmade posters displayed around the room. One of them reads: "Arrest bacterial plaque WANTED for destroying teeth and gums." Another, "Rushing brushing isn't right Careful brushing wins the fight." Baker, a resident of the United States for 14 years, learned dentistry in England, she said, adding that over the years she has alternated between the jobs of teacher and dental hygienist.

"It's worked out very well," she said, adding that she likes her work as dental hygienist for the school very much. "I hope, because of the program that children will have a better under standing of their teeth and what's involved in caring for them." "They perenially ranK as two of the strongest supporters of our Annual Shrine Circus and our Annual Shrine All-Star Football Classic," he said. Although known for its charity work, the Shrine is primarily a social organization for 32nd degree Masons and Knights Templar, Boucher said. But all Shrin-ers are Masons first and Shriners second. As Masons and Shriners throughout the country observe our nation's Bicentennial this year, we pay special homage to the many devoted Masons who played key roles in establishing the United States of America and, throughout our nation's glorious history, have made substantial and meaningful contributions to the rights of individuals everywhere," he said.

In addition to Miller, other officers of the Redlands Shrine Club are Tilford Morgan of Redlands, first vice president; George Miller of Yucaipa, second vice president; Nevin N. Maccubbin of Redlands, secretary-treasurer. The San Gorgonio Shrine Club, with Hill as president, is also represented by Virgil Weaver of Cabazon, first vice president; Raymond Lee of Banning, second vice president; Charles Hay of Beaumont, third vice president; and Maurice Edwards of Banning, secretary-treasurer. The 8:40 p.m. blaze at 18 Buena Vista Street caused smoke and heat damage throughout the building, they said. Some 20 firemen spent nearly a half-hour to control the flames.

The fire started in an arm chair on the first floor of the building, probably as long as an hour before the flames were noticed, Captain Dale Martin said. The house is owned by Larry Johansen, of Colorado, and is being rented by Don Marlett and John Reynolds. No one was home when the flames broke out.
