Water Front Report From Boy Scout Camp Over 250 scouts made use of the excellent waterfront facilities at the Lone Star Area Council summer camp during the two week period in June. The camp is being held at the Lake Fannin Ranch north of Bonham.

Scouts swim in a marked off area of the lake with a boardwalk pier and float. Areas are marked off for non swimmers, beginners and swimmers. The shallow area has a good solid gravel bottom and has proven excellent for training novice swimmers. District Executive Bob Cox served as waterfront director during this period. Eagle Scout Charles King of Commerce served as an Instructor and Explorer Scout Norris Barnard of Bonham served as life guard.

Mr. Cox is a graduate of the National Aquatic School of the Boy Scouts of America. King holds the scout life guard rating and Barnard has his life saving and swimming merit badges and is completing his work on the scout life guard. Scouts at camp go swimming by troops morning and afternoon for 45-minute periods. When the boys go in they "buddy up" and remain with their buddy at all times as a safety factor.

Boys buddy with fellows of their own swimming ability. In order to classify as a beginner, a scout must jump In water over hi.s head, swim 25 feet, turn around and come back, using any stroke he desires. If there is any doubt about a boy's ability to do this the life guard classifying, swims along side of the youngster to encourage him and as a safety factor. To rate as a swimmer a scout must be able to swim using the sirfe, back, breast and crawl strokes properly. The pool is closed to "troop swims" after 5 o'clock each e-, ning and tho next hour is devoted to individual instruction In swlm- mng and life saving merit badges.
