SYSTEM RANKS UNC SECOND IN Wilton Garrison's FORT FARAD Williamson Crowns Michigan King No 2 and No 3 Teams Meet In Sugar Bowl Shrine Bowl System Needs Remodeling npHE Shrine Bowl football game here is staged in mag- nificent style each year and its promoters do a wonderful job which requires a lot of work Off the field the game is a big-time production But on the field there are problems which have never been solved Yesterday the tide of complaints rose again most of the boys get to play enough some hardly any It follows that if a player is good enough to be picked to play here he should be good enough to play at least half of the game But there enters the problem The coaches soon chbose a lineup which they believe is the best for offense and defense plus a few changes They want to win so they stick more or less to this system They make substitutions so each boy can play some but often not enough to give him a chance After the game one North Carolina player told ust my life dreamed of playing in this game I got in but I did hot get a chance to run with the ball I know I could have gained Now what will the college coaches think of Another fine player was used for one play He threw an opponent for a 13-yard loss and was taken out There are 30 players on each squad That is two full teams with four substitutes each Why not a rule that the coaches use one team the first quarter the other team the second quarter etc and see that the eight subs also have an equal chance? In this way practically every boy would get a chance to play half the game and an opportunity to show his wares Both sides want to win the game but winning it is not as important as giving every player on the squad a chance to display his ability Put a clerk on each bench as they do the College All-Star game in Chicago and keep a record of the minutes each player competes All the boys want is a break Oklahoma Is Going To Be Rough Rival BY PAUL WILLIAMSON THE first of last two earth tremors in Southern California had its effect on the final 1848 regular-season ratings of the Williamson system Because of 14-14 tie with thrice-beaten Southern Cal Notre Dame slipped to fourth place The Sugar Bowl opponents North Carolina and Oklahoma thus moved up to second and third respectively behind Michigan the almost unani-mous choice for the National championship The Sugar Bowl will bring together two of the highest-ranking opponents to meet in a New game in recent years The Tar Heels rate only one-half point higher at 965 than the Sooners Other leading bowl games will pit California (No 8) vs Northwestern (No 8) in the Rose Bowl (No 16) vs Oregon (No 18) in the Cotton Bowl and Clemson (No 7) vs Missouri (No 14) in the Bowl Thus changes can still be expected in the top 20 before ratings including the post-season games are made FORECAST COMPARED Every fall for many years the Williamson System has issued a preview story attempting to call the shots on the up and coming current football season Here under the column headed "Predicted" is tabulated briefly the final grid leaders of 1948 as the System saw it last September Under the column headed are the actual final standings based on results for each team both in and out of their com ference Jt may be noted that among th teams predicted in September by the Williamson System to end amoni the first 20 of the 1948 football season 14 of them did just that In fact Northwestern Army California and Notre Dame finished among th first ten as predicted by the System last September It was not all bouquets however because Penn Stats (22) Michigan State (23) and William and Mary (36) did not end among the first 20 although pretty good outfits at that Columbia TCU and Nebraska disappointed the and nearly everybody else Among those which surprised wen Michigan Clemson Cornell anc Ohio State The final 1948 Williamson eeasoi ratings eompared with the pre-sea son forecast: Is Clipper End Dick O'Hair the official is Umpire Humpy Wheeler the nose-guarded Clipper Is Jim Hough and No 2 is Guard Bud WedcL Bottom right former Army All-American Lt Doc Blanchard says a few words at halftime Clipper President Bob Allen is beside him No 7 Is Clip Jim Elvington whose Held goal finished the scoring Elvington doubled this season as an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey was presented with a gift from his players at Intermission (Observer Staff photos by Jake Houston) THRILL SHOW COURTESY CLIPS COLLEGIANS! listed: 1 Conn (first fight) 2 Jim Brad-dock 3 Max Baer 4 Tommy Farr 5 Max Schmcling (first fight) 6 Joe Walcott 7 Arturo Godoy 8 Bob Pastor 9 Jack Sharkey and 10 Tony Galento Louis admitted that Conn was "close to a the night of their June 18 1941 first encounter for the title "I knew I had to knock him out to recalled the champion "I knew it before the 13th round Billy told me so himself in the ninth He said: 'You got a fight on your hands and I told him I knew it He was tough He kept at me He let me get set I never had to fight harder" Of Braddock from whom he won They say he quit Well I sure poured it on him" Joe said Britisher Farr was "strong and in good condition He made me miss and went the Louis said he rated Schmeling the only man to kayo him as a pro fifth because of his own carelessness was my own fault and the German was under-rated" Walcott Louis admitted was "pretty strong He hit hard enough to knock me down but he wasn't a bruising puncher like Braddock or Baer Besides I was awfully bad that night Underweight and no timing" Godoy was tough and hard to hit because he fought in a crouch Louis said while Pastor was ranked No 8 because "he knew how to run and was a good boxer although not as good as Louis said of Sharkey who suffered a terrific beating from the Brown Bomber "He was game" Joe whep he recalled Ge'ento tunny guy and awkward But he was pretty trimming the college All-Stars 30-21 in a corking Sabbath scrap were packing away their pads and calling it quits for the season Efforts to book a return meeting with the Weirton Va Weiriters who lost to the Clips by S0-14 last week fell through because the Weiriters disbanded after returning home from the local engagement Still front office hands were busy renewing efforts to form a league to put their club in next season Weirton and McKeesport's Ironmen who gave the local pros a run for their money too before losing a 14-0 decision three weeks back definitely will tackle the Clippers during the '49 season General Manager Bob Allen said yesterday And both are interested in hooking on in the same league with the Charlotte team their officials have told him the title in 1937 Louis said: "He
