Brice scored his touchdown on a 12 yard run after safety Don Tribble intercepted a Bunce pass at the 30 to set it up.

The Indians, ranked 10th in the nation and favored by 20 points, suffered their third loss in 10 games. San Jose State took a 7-0 in the first half when Lloyd smashed over from the one after Stanford turned the ball over on a bad snap from center in a kicking situation. Rose Bowl-bound Stanford appeared to have tied the score Memphis SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -The Memphis Pros aided by the strong clutch shooting of Charlie Villiams and Wilbert Jones held off the Utah Stars Saturday night to score a 125-116 American Basketball Association victory.

The Pros were the underdog through the first half and were down 62-60 at intermission after fighting back from a 51-46 deficit at 5:39 of the second period. Utah'sshooting and rebounding sagged in the second half and Memphis took the lead 69-68 at 8:07 of the third period after Williams and Bob Warren combined to bring their club from behind. Then Williams teamed with Jones to do most of the lscoring from midway through the third period. Memphis had a 94-90 lead going into the final frame and expanded to 110-101 with 5:05 remaining. It was the Trojans' fourth consecutive victory of the season after a disappointing start and their seventh straight win over Washington. Rae, the backup Quarterback. kicked an earlier field goal and starting USC quarterback Jim-mie Jones accounted for the other Trojan points with a seven-yard run in the third quarteer.

Washington took a 12-10 lead with less than six minutes to play when fullback Pete Tag-gures crashed over for a touchdown from the Trojan two. That score was set up when Husky linebacker Bob Ferguson recovered Lynn Swann's fumble on the Southern Cal 48. Sonny Sixkiller, who had been stymied for a good portion of the second half, then got his passing arm warmed up and moved the Huskies to the Trojan four. Taggares took it over from there on two successive carries. Southern Cal's touchdown in the third period was set up when defensive safety Artimus Parker intercepted a Sixkiller pass on the Trojan 30 and returned it 61 yards to the Washington eight yard line.

Southern California's defense was outstanding as it allowed Washington only one first down in the third period and Sixkiller was held to 12 completions in 37 pass attempts. He had three interceptions. a 14-9 before punishing the Wildcats with two touchdowns and a safety for a 30-9 halftime margin. Tailback Jeff Kinney set a Nebraska career record when he scored his 29th touchdown and slotback Johnny Rodgers set a school record by catching his ninth and tenth scoring pass in a single season. After Kansas State pulled close in the second quarter, the Cornhuskers traveled 79 yards in nine plays, Kinney popping over from the one with 5:37 remaining.

That's when the Cornhusker rfpfpnse lived ud to its reputation of being the best in the nation. Defensive end Willie Harper nailed Kansas State New Zealanders Bob Charles and John Lister were at 427, 12 strokes off the pace heading into Sunday's final round. Charles shot a 73 and Lister 68. Argentina was at 431 in fourth place after Roberto De Vincenzo shot a 71 Saturday and Florentino Molina a 70. England was fifth at 433, with Tony Jacklinfiring a 75 and Peter-Oosterhuis a 72.

Nicklaus was seven strokes ahead of Player in the contest for the international cup, which goes to the individual low scorer, with his tournament total of 200. New Zealand's Charles and Liang-Huan Lu of China were tied for third at 213. The 63 shot by Nicklaus broke the course record of 67 posted in February by Gibby Gilbert. However, Nicklaus was using the smaller European golf ball while Gilbert used a standard U. S.

pro tour ball. Both balls weigh the same. It was one of Nicklaus' finest days. Trailed by a hugh crowd of fans as he and Trevino toured the course in perfect weather, the three-time Masters champion split the fairways with blooming drives. (surrounded by two defenders) the Arizona coach said the Wildcat receiver went the highest and that the bill hit his hand first and then bounced, whereupon he grabbed it.

In great contrast to the happy, boisterous Arizona dressing room, the Cougars slunk silently off the field and into their team buses for the short trip back to BYU fieldhouse. Although it is only a few blocks from the stadium to the fieldhouse, it must have seemed like a hundred miles. A grim and bitterly-disappointed Coach Tom Hudspeth of the Cougars said he was simply "heartsick" over the loss. In fact, Hudspeth said he never felt worse over losing a game. "We let down and didn't have the poise when we needed it," the Cougar coach added.

"Arizona was the opportunist. We gave them the chances and they took advantage of them." After McKee's spectacular grab and run for the touchdown, Soltys came bounding back into the working press section of the press box after an absence of several minutes and shouted breathlessly: "It was a helluva play wasn't Extra Ball Another press box observer said, "That guy McKee must have had an extra ball hidden under his jersey. That's the only way 1 11 ever believe he came up with the ball." After Joe Liljenquist punted to Arizona half-yard line in the 4 1 -i ItSri loose and rolled out of the end zone for a safety. Kansas State had to kick off and quarterback Jerry Tagge took Nebraska 33 yards in five plays, Gary Dixon crashing over from the two. Nebraska added second half touchdowns on 56 and 17-yard touchdown passes from Tagge to Woody Cox and Rodgers.

Kansas State took advantage when Nebraska failed on a fourth down attempt and drove 35 yards for its last touchdown, Don Calhoun scoring from one. Tagge completed 20 of 28 passes for 285 yards and Rodgers caught 10 for 125 yards. Nebraska dominated the first quarter, running 31 plays to three for Kansas State in the first 14 minutes. The Cornhuskers methodically drove 80 and 94 yards. The first drive consumed 14 plays and the second 17.

Rodgers made a leaping stab near the end line of a six-yard pass from Tagge for the first touchdown. Dixon cracked over from the five for the second. Then came Kansas State's spurt. The Wildcats crashed 62 yards in 14 plays with Morrison hitting Henry Childs with eight-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing kickoff, the ball bounced into the arms of David Brown and Kansas State was in business again at the Cornhuskers 28.

The Wildcats drove to the nine before settling for a 34-yard field goal by John Goerger, narrowing the score to 14-9 with 8:43 left in the half. But that's when Nebraska rose to the occasion, smashing across 16 points before intermission to remove all doubts that the Nov. 25 attraction in Norman, would not be marred by a once-beaten team. Arkansas Stumbles By SfAU DALLAS (UPI)-Dickey Morton, demoted to the second team because of fumblitis, came off the bench in the fourth quarter Saturday to steady Arkansas' stumbling offense and bring the Razor-backs to an 18-13 decision over Southern Methodist. The victory kept alive Arkansas' hopes of winning the Southwest Conference title and appearing New Year's Day in the Cotton Bowl.

Arkansas is now 4-1-1 in league play. Arkansas had been frustrated all day by penalties, fumbles and pass interceptions, and it appeared those mistakes were going to keep the razorbacks from winning for the third week in a row. But Morton came in midway through the final period to spring for 26 and 22 yards on the drive that brought Arkansas its winning touchdown. Jon Richardson, who had set up SMU's go ahead points in the third period by fumbling, got the winning score on a two-yard run. third quarter with Joe Bailey, former Orem High star, downing the ball at that spot, the Wildcats tried to move the ball out of the shadow of their goal post, but lost ground.

Following the first play for scrimmage after the punt, the public address announcer said, "Joe Petroshus (the Arizona ball carrier) lost a foot." Whereupon somebody in the puss box urgeu the Cougars to "tear off the other foot." Homecoming Queen A group of cadets from the Army ROTC unit on the BYU campus formed an honor guard for the homecoming queen, Jean Christensen, and her attendants, Susan Taylor and Patricia Cummings and their escorts, during the halftime activities. The queen and her attendants sat on chairs at the five-yard line at the north end of the field and watched the BYU band and Cougarettes perform, which they did in their usual superb manner. After Golden Richards had completed a 59-yard touchdown play on a pass from Brian Gunderson in the second period, Jerry Young, a member of the Herald news staff covering the game with his camera, yelled at the BYU speedster: "Hey, I believe I got you on film on that run." "I hope you got that block by Pete (VanValkenburg)" was Richards' first comment. It was some block VanValkenburg threw, too, and it enabled Richards to go all the way. PALM BEACH GAhDENS, Fla.

(UPI) Jack Nicklaus rode a red-hot putter to an "absolutely unbelievable" record nine-under-par 63 Saturday and boosted himself and his country into the lead of the 19th Wolrd Cup Golf Tournament. The blond "Golden Bear" of the U. S. pro tour took apart the tough, PGA National Course with an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey. Teammate Lee Trevino added a 71 to give the United States a 134 for the day and a three-round total of 415, 17 below par.

South Africans Gary Player and Harold Henning, leaders in the first two rounds of the 72-hole international tournament, stayed within thie stokes of the blazing Nicklaus-Trevino team until the final hole, when Player hit a shot into the water and took a double-bogey and Henning had a bogey. Player, 8-under-par for the first two rounds, wound up Saturday's play with a 71, one under, and Henning was even-par 72. Their 54-hole total of 421 left them six strokes behind the United States. The safety occurred when Oklahoma punter John Carroll was tacklert in the end zone before he could boot the ball. The Sooners shattered three school records in addition to the NCAA season team rushing offense mark in the homecoming victory which puts Oklahoma 9-0 for the year. Early in the second quarter the Sooners scored three times within three minutes, twice on the first play following fumble recoveries. Crosswhite began the scoring barrage with his 38-yard run midway the first period. Four minutes later, Mildren kept for a right end sweep and his 65-yard journey.

Carroll missed a 63-yard field goal attempt, but successfully kicked all eight conversion points, setting a new school record of 43 points after touchdown in one season, three better than the old mark set in 1948 and 1951. The Sooners also surpassed school total offense, team single season and individual career offense standards. go through the formality of declaring Michigan the confer ence choice for the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day at the conclusion of next Saturday's final league games. Michigan, 10-0 for the season and 7-0 in the Big Ten, led 10-7 at the half but only 17-14 with one period to go, setting up a pulsating finish in which each team had to settle for a field goal. It was the first time all season that any team scored more than 13 points on the Wolverines, who went into the game as the nation's leader in rushing defense.

Michigan wound up with 304 yards rushing to 124 for Purdue, but the Boilermakers gained 185 yards passing against only 56 for Michigan. Purdue scored touchdowns in the first and third periods on the passing of Gary Danielson, who was injured for the third time this season in the third period. Otis Armstrong took a 9-yard scoring pass from Danielson and Dairy Stingley grabbed a 66-yard bomb. Michigan, held scoreless in the first period, scored its first touchdown in the second quarter, Ed Shuttlesworth smashing over from the one-yard line. Cornell Upset By Dartmouth HANOVER, N.H.

Marinaro, with a yards gained average during his senior season tht matches his 210 pounds, broke one 48-yard touchdown run after Dartmouth, now 7-1, had built a 17-7 lead. Marinaro wound up with 177 yards in 44 carries. Marinaro scored both Cornell touchdowns, the other on a one yard run as he boosted his season touchdown total to 19 and his career mark to 47. After a scoreless third period, Northwestern drove 63 yards in 18 plays for the winning touchdown by Anderson. Ohio State's first touchdown came with 4:19 left in the first quarter after guard Jim Kregel recovered a fumbled punt on the Northwestern 16-yard line. On fourth and one, Lamka faked to fullback Rick Galbos, then raced untouched into the end zone. But Strunk took the ensuing kickoff on the Northwestern seven-yard line and raced straight up the center of the field behind a wedge of blockers, broke clear at the Wildcat 40 and was gone. Ohio State's second-period field goal was set up by Harry Howard's second pass interception of the day which lie returned 17 yards to the Northwestern 12.

The Buckeyes were unable to move and settled for Schram's 27-yard field goal. In the first half Northwestern had five turnovers, three pass interceptions and two fumbles. Howard's first pass interception stopped a Wildcat drive that had carried to the Buckeye 29 in 11 plays following the opening kickoff. (UPI)-Pat Sullivan passed for four touchdowns, two to his favorite receiver, Terry Beasley, and two to Dick Schmalz, in carrying the unbeaten, fifth-ranked Auburn Tigers to a 35-20 victory Saturday over previously unbeaten, sixth-ranked Georgia. Sullivan, the South's leading candidate for the Heisman trophy, threw 34 and 70 yards to Beasley. He hit Schmalz with 15 yard and five yard touchdowns and set up a fifth score in a tremendous one-man show. It was a 27-yard pass from Sullivan to Schmalz, which the Auburn senior threw while being dragged to the ground by two Georgia defenders, that set up the Tigers' first touchdown. That pass put Auburn at the Georgia two-yard line and two plays later Tommy Lowry plunged over from one yard out to put Auburn in the lead with 4:25 gone in the game.

By RAY SCHWARTZ Herald Sports Writer The University of Arizona footballers really whooped it up in their dressing room, following their 27-14 victory over BYU Saturday in the Cougars' homecoming game.

The noise was so loud, in fact, the Frank Soltys, the Arizona sports information director sitting in the press box while getting post-game quotes from Coach Bob W. ber via telephone line into the Wildcats' dressing room, admitted he had difficulty hearing the AU mentor above the din created by his exhuberant and shouting players. "The ball game took a lot of patience," a happy Coach Weber said. "We had a terrible time making first and 10. But all of our playeVs hung in there tough.

The defense played real tight. "Charlie's (McKee) catch (on the touchdown play that gave the Wildcats' a 20-14 lead and broke the game open) was the best catch I've ever seen. That interception (by Jackie Wallace) and a fumble run by Greg Boyd cinched it for us." The Arizona coach clarified the play, pointing out Wallace was not attempting to lateral the ball after the interception, but that it definitely was a fumble. Happy To Win "We're really happy to win this one. BYU is a real great scrambling team, especially on third down plays.

They always had the pressure on us." On McKee's catch.
