inasmuch as the Indians have president of the National Association By SID FEDER XJEW YORK Nov 2" i There are no potted palms in the hotel lobby where the winter baseball meetings started today but all kinds of rumors were running around and the hottest tip was that William Sramham is going to have a fight to remain boss of the minor leagues i Although the magnates found fewj ceed him Leading the parade of possibilities are Frank Shaugh-nessy preisdent of the International league and Leo Miller current general manager of the Syracuse (NY) International league club and former head of Buffalo Betenbaugh and M'Craw Like ly to Start In Shrine Came Fetzer Looks Good BY EDDIE ALLEN r) EIDSVILLE'S Hap Perry head IV coach of the North Carolina Shrine All-Stars had at least three bie reasons to grin yesterday as he- opened drills for Saturday's battle with South Carolina nign scnooi standouts here The 'Tar Heels worked lightly in the morning and finished off with a brisk scrimmage the afternoon on the Central athletic field Foremost among Hap's grin ma terial as everyone had expected was Asheville's classy stepper Billy Britt who lived up to promises with some slick running Britt ran at tailback with the tentative first" team and at the spin spot was Tom Fetzer Hap's own lad from Reidsville who showed up as a fancy passer and carrier The third Perry ribtickler was not as much talked-of as the first two but looked just as good as either He is Elizabeth City's John Copley a squat 210-pounder who is built like a fireplug but who can go with amazing speed and powar Copley is an almost certain starter at blocking back for the Tar Heels and will more than likely do the A punting He also may be called on to pack the leather for he show-ed yesterday that he can really take off TWO MISSING The North Carolina squad was in tact with the exception of a pair Bradford Not Awed by First Raleigh Game rN THAT SAD night of the first meeting of the Central and Raleigh high football teams right after the Caps had walloped the Charlotte club by 28 to 0 Coach Vince Bradford of the woe begone vanquished made a remarkable statement to us "If we meet this team again for the state title we will win" he said "We looked terrible tonight and Raleigh has a fine team but I believe we will win if we meet again" Central did indeed look terrible that night in Raleigh The Wildcats were so completely outclassed by Lee Stone's Capital City charges that Brad's optimism concerning any future clash between the two teams sounded more like wishful thinking than anything else We doubt that any other spectator present at the Raleigh fiasco had any idea that Central could lick Raleigh once if they played a dozen more games But Brad apparently believed in his Wildcats this year All along he has commended their fine spirit He liked the way they co-operated Maybe they let him down a little in that first Raleigh game and maybe they were a little off the beam when they lost to Asheville here But in all the other games Central played smoothly and with enthusiasm and with great talent Brad and his assistant coaches got them ready for the second meeting with Raleigh They made intelligent and sound preparations in their attack and defense and had them sharp on all the fundamentals They also had them mentally ready to play an inspired game They couldn't miss at Memorial stadium Saturday night and their 7-0 triumph over the team that gave them a football lesson the first time they met was a little classic It was without doubt one of the finest high school football games ever played in Charlotte Coaches and Planers Deserve Salute VINCE BRADFORD Pasco Gettle Dick Dashiell and 0 Britton the coaches who handled the Centrals in leading them to the first state championship to come to our town in several years did a fine job and deserve the acclaim they are receiving The players themselves however won the games and it's to them that the greatest honor must go They will be paid due tribute at a little party to be given them at the Myers Park club tonight by three of the most loyal Central football supporters in town Dr Roy McKnight Dr Claude Squires and Bill Richard These three honorary members of Central's Block club (letters awarded them during the administration of Bob Allen who appreciated their co-operation back in the years he coached Central) will see that the Wildcats are well fed and well saluted Captain Walter Betenbaugh the big fiery blond tackle made a worthy field leader of a hustling hard working football squad that took a lot of bumps in games and practice but at the same time had a lot of fun before it finally knocked over the vaunted Raleigh aggregation to take in the diadem Betenbaugh along with Buck McGraw a fine end were singled out as the squad's two most outstanding senior players and were selected for the North Carolina Shrine all-star team They have another week's work before signing off in football and will carry on for Central in the prep classic at Memorial stadium next Saturday Over the season long however it was Jimmy Shoemaker Central's great partially deaf fullback who furnished the biggest spark in the team's championship drive Shoemaker was bad news to the opposition in every ball game He could go when others couldn't Teams learned that he was the man they "had to stop and Raleigh was able to do that to some extent Saturday but he was still a threat even when every gun was aimed at him Comeback of Charles Finest of All 'PHE NICEST THING that happened in the pay-off game however was the work of Ed Charles the little tailback who had an up-and-down season with disappointments that might have taken the starch out of a less game kid Ed started off the season as a first stringer and looked like a ball of fire But he had his bad nights and acquired the reputation of being erratic One of his worst nights was in that first Raleiph game His coaches demoted him He came off the first string and occasionally was cast with the lowliest scrubs in practice sessions In the important Gastonia game he did not see a minute's action and all the evidence seemed to indicate that his coaches had lost confidence in him But little Ed who must have been hurt to the quick over his lost caste and the obscurity that had enveloped him kept his chin up He grimly determined to prove that he was still quite a football player and he got his big chance in the Raleigh game We do not have to tell you what happened He came through as the star of the evening with a devastating performance galloping 70 yards for the lone score of the game and somehow we liked that best of all about Central's championship conquest at Memorial stadium Saturday night of linemen who will be unable to play because of injuries Raleigh's George Cherry who saw action here Saturday did not come bei TWO OF THE Shown above are two of the coaches of the North Carolina Shrine all-star squad and two of their best backs
