14 Men convicted in truck firing given Page 14 DAVIDSON April Dedication of the Martin Science building at Davidson college Friday will attract notables from several parts of the country including Governor Broughton and military figures President John Cunningham will preside during the entire program Governor Broughton will bring greetings from the state and Dr Francis Gaines president of Washington and Lee university will make the principal address Major General Norman Thomas Kirk surgeon general of the United States Army will be the recipient of the degree of doctor of science Visitors who arrive in Charlotte Friday morning will be guests at the college at a luncheon for the Mecklenburg Medical society at the Barringer hotel at noon Dr Oren Moore prominent Davidson alumnus and president of the Alumni association will preside at the luncheon Upon arrival at Davidson from Charlotte they will be taken under a military escort of honor to Richardson stadium where General Kirk James Simmons and Fred Rankin with Governor Broughton and President Cunningham will occupy the reviewing stand while the 24th College Training detachment stages a formal parade At the conclusion of the parade the party will be conducted to the South court where the formal dedication exercises will be conducted The building is named for Col William 1 Martin recognized as the virtual father of the sciences at Davidson and his spn the late Dr William Martin Jr who became president of the college in 1912 and who continued in that position for 17 years Dr Walter Lingle president-emeritus of the college will deliver the invocation at the dedication exercises ROWLAND April Staff Sgt Hgpry McArn (at right above) 24 has been missing in action since an air raid over Germany on last March 18 the War department notified his mother Mrs John McArn He was missing on his 22nd mission over Germany The picture above was made on January 15 1944 when he was presented the Air medal by Colonel Randle commanding officer of the bombardment group On last February 27 Sergeant McArn was awarded an Oak Leaf cluster and on last March 17 he received his second Oak Leaf cluster He has been overseas since October 1943 in the service since August 31 1942 He received his training at flexible gunnery school Fort Myers Fla Lowry Field Denver Gowen Field Boise Idaho and army air base at Pocatello Idaho Staff Sergeant McArn formerly resided in Charlotte He attended Myers Park school and Alexander Graham Junior High school in Charlotte Mrs McArn's elder son Master Sgt John McArn has been in the air corps since December 17 1941 and in New Guinea for more than a year He was recently made technical inspector of light medium and heavy bombers of a bomber command This is the highest rating an enlisted man can hold in the army air force AFTER-EASTER CWEAtRANCIE CdDATTS and SOTS A FIGHTER BASE IN ENGLAND April 13 New Messerschmitt fighters appeared in the sky today but American Mustang pilots found that like the old ones they could be shot down Two kills were claimed against the latest ME fighter Pilots described the plane as faster better streamlined and better turning than previous models German pilots appeared cocky about their new ships and made more aggressive attacks than usual" said Capt Charles Lasko of Nemacolin Pa who bagged both the Messerschmitts one without firing a shot new has been added to the Messerschmitt" said Lasko describe it but they must have thought it superior to the Mustang the way they came at us" Lasko got his first new model after he had TONIGHT AT PLAZA The Interdenominational Council of Christian Young People is sponsoring a series of recreation nights in 10 Charlotte neighborhoods the first of which will be held tonight from 8 until 10 at Plaza Presbyterian church Mrs Mary Brackman Sills of the Parks and Recreation commission will lead the event tonight assisted by Miss Sara Delane council member Miss Margaret Pittman advisor of young people's work at Plaza church has also assisted in making arrangements Recreation night is interdenominational it was emphasized and all young people of the Plaza community are cordially invited to attend The plan for recreation nights is an experimental one it was said but if the first evenings are considered successful they will be continued on a permanent basis CAROLINA
