Weiss Yankee general manager nor Lee MacPhail director of personnel were in Florida where Ford reportedly signed By Tom Kane The Sacramento Soions today announced the acquisition of Robert (Bob) Roselli 26 righthanded hitting catcher on option from the world champion Milwaukee Braves of the National League Dave Kelley director of Solon personnel indicated there will be other additions to the Sacramento roster before the start of spring training next month Native Of SF Roselli a native of San Francisco was with the Toronto club of the AAA International League during the 1957 baseball season and batted 241 driving in 43 runs He hit 13 doubles four triples and 10 home runs The obtaining of Roselli is the first major addition to the home nine during the winter John Quinn general manager of the Braves told Kel ley he wants Roselli to get a lot of work and believes a season in the Coast League will prove valuable Bob who has been in baseball since 1950 when he caught for the pennant winning Ventura club in the California League spent two years in the army at Ford Ord He was a teammate of Sacramento Solon righthander Bud Watkins Played With Ventura While with Ventura in for a catching job Dalrymple is a highly touted rookie out of the Western League Barragan carried a good part of the catching load during the 1957 Sacramento season and Neal is a holdover veterap If Gary Rushing decides to give catching a whirl it is going to be crowded around the plate dur ing spring training Although there was no mention made of it the fine hand of Sibby Sisti new Solon manager can be seen in the Roselli deal Sibby watched the catcher in action during spring training sieges with the Braves and apparently was 1 Dl WILBUR ADAMS The nutria that once valu able but voracious visitor which wildlife managers are beginning to wish they never heard of is expanding its range almost as far as English sparrows Asian flue and some other unfortunate imports The nutria an oversized South American rat with a high priced fur coat already has become well enough established in Louisiana Texas Oregon and Washington to incite conservationists to open warfare Arkansas recently banned keeping of the nutria in any thing but escape proof pens and announced nutria on the loose would be regarded as predators Oklahoma issued a warning last week against turning the big rodents loose and game and fish commission reported one caught in a wild trap Survives Winter This one presumably was an escapee from a fur farm but just the same the fact that it survived in the rigorous Montana winter long enough to get caught has made some previously' complacent officials nervous Some 20 years ago when nutria fur became the darling started A few escaped and particularly in the south thrived exceedingly Soon it developed that they are muskrat like enough to like the same habitat chasing out the muskrats in the process since the nutria weigh up to 20 pounds Not only do they eat diet of aquatic vegetation they eat the favor ite greens of migratory water-fowl too to the extent that ducks can hardly pick up a light lunch where the nutria have taken over Open Mind They also turned out to have an open mind on the subject of groceries munching their way through fields of tomatoes corn and other cash crops At present they are the number one wildlife predator on row crops and sugar cane in Louisiana and possibly Texas A colony on the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland has denuded several acres of bullrushes and federal biologists are trying to end the experiment in any way they can find that works In the process of losing friends and alienating people the nutria has gone all the way Its once cherished fur now brings little more at the preparing for the final home stand of the season Friday night against the Wolves of Nevada Hank Elespuru coach of the Hornets said he expects all of his battlers to be in shape with the possible exception of Danny DiRe the aggressive sophomore from Everett Wash DiRe was to have Xrays taken today to determine if cracked bone in his nose has healed The injury caused him to miss the Pocatello tourney Wolves Beat Cal Nevada coached by Jimmie Olivas figures to give SSC some stiff competition The Wolves scored a decision over California last Saturday with Dick Short winning at 125 pounds Joe Bliss at 139 Bill Short at 147 and Augus McLeod at 178 and Jim Sloan earning a draw at 165 While Elespuru is not overlooking the Renoites he likes to talk about the intermountain test last weekend and not just because Terry Smith 156 and Jim Flood 165 won championships and another Hornet 139 pound Bob Ericson reached the finals Tough Tourney "It was a tremendous he said "Ike Deetef Washington State coach told me it was the toughest one seen in 25 years and that includes many nationals" This of course speaks well for the 1958 National Collegiate Athletic Association championships to which SSC and the California Aggies will be host March 27th 28th and 29th in the memorial auditorium "In Pocatello two NCAA titlists Idaho Bill Haynes 147 and Dale Lea tham 178 were continued Hank Leatham was decisioned decisively by Michigan John Horne who won every round Fine Heavies "Competition was tough at all weights Frankly never seen a better group of heavies Hal Espy NCAA champion from Idaho State Michigan Tom Me-Neely a second string tackle in football who can hit as hard as a mule and Washington Fred Elespuru remarked that Flood and Smith were given strong consideration for the outstanding boxer award which went to Dave Abeyta Idaho 125 pounder "There was a little surprise about added Hank "because Abeyta had only one match while Smith and Flood had two each However Abeyta is a good Rooted For Hornets The Hornets had quite a rooting section of fans from Idaho Falls Why they selected the Sacramentans as their favorites is unknown to Elespuru but he is happy they did "Why they rushed to the ring and carried our winners virtually all the way to the dressing he recalled Hank said Genaro Munoz a 119 pound sophomore who was withdrawn from the tourney because of a question concerning his eligibility has been dared and will compete against Nevada technicality on registration for the spring semester caused the he explained "We want to take any chances so we held him SSC Schedule Following the dual meet with Nevada the Hornets have a February 20th date with the College of Idaho in Caldwell and then will compete in the Chico State Invitational February 28th and March 1st The rest of their revised schedule calls for them to go to Nevada March 3rd and to Idaho State March 15th The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Championships will be held March 20th 21st and 22nd at Nevada weight division? It make sense" Shorf Orders Entries will close Thursday for the San Joaquin Challenge Cup Tennis Championships in Stockton starting on Birthday Entries should be sent to Len Adams 1435 West Elmwood Street Del Coursey a big righthanded pitcher owhed by the Soions is teaching school at the Caruthers High School in Fresno County He is expected to report for spring training next month Eight USC gridders were taken in the recent pro draft Four UCLA Bruins three COP Bengals and one California Golden Bear were tabbed but hot a Stanford Indian Nick and Pete Spanakos identical twins are boxing for the College of Idaho this season They will compete in the coast tournament in Reno on March 20th 21st and 22nd and if successful they will come to Sacramento for the nationals the following week They hail from Brooklyn Dick Stuart broke the Dominican League home run record when he hit 14 out of the park in 50 games this winter Nip McHose Southern California Golf Association president was Stanford basketball captain 35 years ago Joe Gritts foVmer Lodi High School end has transferred from Stockton Junior College to Sacramento State Crawford Wins Wants Bigger Game NEW YORK UP -Mickey Crawford elated at last impressive victory over Tex Gonzalez today offered a $15000 guarantee for a fight with any of the three survivors in the welterweight title tournament Sandy haired Crawford who hails from Saginaw Mich but now is a commer cial artist in Detroit fought as a middleweight last night while winning a unanimous decision over Gonzalez in their 10 rounder in St NichO' las Arena Mickey the 2 to 1 favorite weighed 152 pounds to 155 Still Welterweight been fighting bigger said the 23 year old speedster still a welterweight and would have no trouble paring down to 147 pounds for a welter title fight And I'd like to meet one of the three welter survivors in a 10 rounder in The survivors in the tournament for the vacant 147 pound crown are Cuban Isaac Logart Virgil Akins of St Louis and Vince Martinez of Paterson NJ Art Greenwald who manages Crawford said: "Martinez could fight Mickey while waiting to meet the Lo-gart-Akins tournament semi' final winner Martinez could pick up $15000 and at the same time keep sharp for his title Plans Irish Program Meanwhile promoter Teddy Brenner announced he would try to match Crawford with Eddie Andrews for an all Irish bout at St on March 17th St Patricks Day Gonzales suffered his first loss on the comeback trail after a starter victory over Jay Anderson on November 26th was automatically suspended for 30 days in which his badly swollen left eye and nick on the left brow can heal countering left hooks and straight rights won the decision on a rounds basis as follows: 7-2-1 6-3-1 6-31 The United Press agreed 6-3-1 It was 20th victory in 22 starts and seventh defeat in 32 of high fashion the influx auction block than muskrat Kaline And Tigers Reach Agreement DETROIT AP Slugger A1 Kaline has ended his mild salary differences with the Detroit Tigers He took a slight cut in pay The 23 year old rightfielder a member of the American League all star outfield for three years running came to terms yesterday in a brief conference with General Manager John McHale 1958 contract is believed to call for a salary of about $30000 Kaline batted 295 last season hit 23 home runs and batted in 90 runs There is talk Kaline may be switched from right field to another outfield position probably center field in 1958 The switch depends on whether shortstop Harvey Kuenn makes good as an outfielder whether someone takes over at shortstop and whether the Tigers can find someone to play third base on a full time basis Pitcher Paul Foytack who has won 29 games during the last two seasons also signed his 1958 Detroit contract The 27 year old righthander won 14 and lost II last year his second as a regular starter with the Tigers Foytack was troubled with various muscle injuries last season and was sidelined on at least two occasions His salary was not disclosed Athletics' Urban Signs Contract KANSAS CITY AP Jack Urban a pitcher with one of the better records for the Kansas City Athletics to day returned his signed 1958 contract The 29 year old righthander from Omaha Neb pitched 129 innings for the last season won seven and lost four and had an earned run average of 319 Earlier in the season with Denver he won three and lost two Most writers throughout the country were delighted that no neophyte will be taken into Hall of Fame this year The Baseball Writers Association failed to vote for any new members when it balloted last month We agree that the sacred hall should not be cheapened but still we think a few of the old timers should have gained admission How about the late Tony Lazzeri? He was a member of the Muderers Row He hit 354 one year in the American League Vernon (Lefty) Gomez from nearby Rodeo never lost a World Series game in six appearances over four years for the Yanks Charles Ruffing pitched in 15 World Series games and he won five out of six openers in the classic for New York Sunny Jim Bottomley is another of the great sluggers of the game who certainly rates consideration And we would be inclined to vote for Pepper Martin just for the way he stole the 1934 World Series for the St Louis Cards against Detroit The hustling third sacker hit 355 for the seven games Max Carey former Pittsburgh outfielder came the closest to being elected but he was far below the required number of votes needed Some of the writers suggest that there will not be another player making the grade until 1962 when Bob Feller will become eligible for the honor Popular Event In these days of decreasing attendance at many sport events it is amazing the business the sponsors did at the autorama and motor sports review last weekend on the State Fair ground The attendance was up about a third over last and the weather was not the best When the show first was held in 1951 only about 1500 paid to see it Each year it has showed an increase and last Tjny Roe and Tom Thumb weekend the actual count was battled cowboy Bradley and lOiUilt The promoters are planning an even bigger and better show in 1959 although their space is limited unless they expand and use two buildings at the State Fair Phony Ratings In the last 10 days two ring ratings have been released Ring gives Joey Lopes the No 6 spot in the lightweight division The National Boxing 1 i places the Sacramento boy ninth Which brings to mind the remark made by Jack Hurley during his recent visit to Sacramento "Who is in a position to make a ranking of the 10 best men in a asked the famed boxing expert "Who can say for instance that Eddie Machen is No 1 and Roy Harris No 4 in the heavy- Red
