The Tar Heels put 10 teams in the field the figures showed and pngaged in 80 dual meets of which they w-on 64 tied 1 and lost 15 One of the high? spots of the regular season was Carolina's domination of competition w-ith is arch-rivals from Duke The Tar Heels beat thp Blue Devil carsities in basketball boxing wrestling and swimming and their only loss was the first of thire two-game basketball series The Carolina freshmen went the varsities one better and made a clean swep with the Blue Imps w-innig tw-ice in basketball and swimming and once in boxing and wrpsthng The Tar winter spoils outfits have also ropped their share of Big Five and Conferences titles and ranked well up among the favorites for the Conference tourneys in basketball and swimming this weekend Among the championships already settled Carolina retained its Southern Conference indoor track title and finished third in the Conference boxing tournament The varsity boxers wrestlers and swimmets and the freshmen has-ketballers grapplers and swimmers also walked off with the Big Five titles to give Carolina six out of eight State championships for the winter season just closed The individual standouts bcatuiful two-hit affair against the White Sox and won his game 2-0 Only 29 men faced him during the contest In addition to winning 20 games for the Cleveland-Indians In 1936 he turned in another swell affair against his old team-mates The Yankees were held to three hits in ten innings on September 2nd a tough job to do for any pitcher Incidentally he won his game by a 4-3 tally it being his 18th win of that season It was in 1937 that he set a new wmn and lost percentage to shoot at 938) but his final game lot that season will be just as long remembered After winning fiften in a row Johnny tried for his sixteenth against Detroit on October 3id He would have tied the league record for consecutive victories if a victory was forthcoming but the hand of Fate ruled otherwise He allowed the Tigers only five hits and held them to one run in nine innings plenty good enough to win the ordinary game Jake Wade his mound opponent allowed the Indians but one bingle so Alien had to be content with a 1-0 loss Whether the opeiatmn on Johnny's arm was a complete success will be told dunng the 1940 season Being 34 years of age he dare not Unger for too long a stretch The wish of every red-blooded fan in the country is that he regains his former stuff and poise that he will perform for Ossie Vitt and the Indian club as of yore That will be sufficient in itself GARRISON ords we
