opened at the Beach and Paramount theaters here Friday And I believe I shall To begin with it is the most unusual picture ever seen And it -is a spectacular screen attrac-ton in which sound lighting and ether effects reach a new high in creating atmosphere and emotional support for the story it relates Also It embraces exceptional acting with Welles himself dividing honors with Dorothy Commingoi Joe Cotton a former Miami lad Ruth War-rx and Ihetrtt Sloane Summing up even thing I would sav it is a great picture but far from the mo-t entertaining seteen play of tlits or anv oilier ear It ft one of thme thing? iike the Pyramids which are impressive and definitely intetesling to have seen hut ope an have inoie fun than looking at the Pyramids IN FACT for me this picture has some of the elements of a flop For though the story Is 11 fiction I could not rid mvseif of the notion that Welles was attempting to build a screen masterpiece out of the life story of William Randolph llearst And in the process of shifting facts end covering up his tracks he eomes out with a screen figure which doesn't measure up to the dramatic and interesting aspects of the llearst I know The storv is that of a voting man kicked out of college as was Jlfdru and who later builds a gigantic newspaper and industrial empire as did lleart And like the jeal Heart the of tris picture stir the I'nlted States to war against Spain and later retires to an estate similar to Mr Hearst' San Simeon which' Is packed to the rafters with half the ataturs and art work of the world And there are scores of other incidents in this prcture which run parallel with the life of Hearst IN the leading role Welles gives you a picture of a man who is not hateful but too possessed with himself to have much thought or heart for anything or anyone else But a certain familiar weakness finds its wav into his life in the form of a blondP whom he finally marries after divorcing his first wife And growing older we see him approaching or arriving at that place in life hei old mpn are apt to play ihe fool Which he does to the extent of building ber an opera house and forcing her lack of talent on thp with his new technique which includes starting in the middle and at both ends and moving in all directions until the narrative is completed and the central figure has bepn viewed from all angles outwardly and inwardly A'l of thce innovations arc intriguing and most of them BOB FREDERICKS picture might suggest some familiar gossip in the life of Mr llearst The part of his second wife is played by Miss Commingore whom I would say is the only performer in this picture to distinguish herself above or in a class with the greatest actors of the stage or screen The others are all good but Miss Commingore Is the only sensation in this screen play However let me not give the impression that I didn't enjoy I did and have missed it for anything I just refuse to deviate from my notion that the greatest picture is the most entertaining picture irrespective of whether it is comedv or tragedy or of its higher dramatic attributes And on that basis I repeat it is a swell picture but not the best
