Policy Home Made Delicacies Add Zest To Everyday Meals cm Reviewer Praises Film Mrs Miniver By RONALD SCOFIELD Mrs Miniver the picture of an English woman and her family in the first year of the war baaed on the novel by Jan Struther opened In the Fox Senator Theater last night If the public at large react to It as this reviewer did it should continue there for a record run For it is undoubtedly the finest picture done yet on the theme of the present war and in this writer's opinion it belongs among the finest screen productions of all time Mrs Miniver pictures one little family unit with its suburban village setting as it was affected by the "peace in our period the "phony days the Dunkirk tragedy and the first air blitzes over England The son Joins the Royal Air Force and falls in love with the daughter of the local aristocracy The husband takes his motorboat to Dunkirk and back for six days The wife struggles with the problem of selecting a new hat and quite calmly overcomes the problem of capturing an armed Nazi flier in her garden These episodes fair material for either the melodramatic thriller or the sentimental tear jerker are handled with such honesty such restraint and good taste and with such convincing sincerity and naturalism by director and players that the emotional impact of the picture is at times almost unbearable The average spectator will want to provide himself with a handkerchief of generous proportions Greer Garson plays the title role Walter Pidgeon the husband Richard Ney the son Teresa Wright the daughter in law Dame May Whitty local aristocrat Reginald Owen and Henry Traverse village characters and Helmut Dantine the wounded Nazi flier All deserve academy swards for their performance and other Oscars should be reserved for Director William Wyler and his script writers and technicians Mrs Miniver is strong medicine But these are strong times To sea it is a cleansing and searing experience It is about the closest approach to great art that the screen has produced in several years cluded a dish of real pickle appetizers Try our pickles and conserve which we offer today They will add greatly to your table A table simply is incomplete incendiary bombs could cause more destruction to San Francisco with her winds and wooden buildings than was wrought by the great earthquake and fire of 1906 He accused Lieutenant General DeWitt commanding gqperal of the 4th Army and the Western Defense Command of neglecting to instruct civilians regarding adequate plans for evacuating the city in the event Japanese bombs start huge fires lie protested further that General DeWitt has not agreed to practice evacuation and has not asked for civilian aid Will Petition Congre Judge Denman said he will petition congress "on behalf of the men women and children of San Francisco for redress of their The charges and intentions were set forth by the judge in printed form after a letter exchange with General DeWitt and with John McCloy assistant secretary of war "What for seven months General DeWitt has contemplated doing is to wait until this conflagration existed and then for the first time place officers and soldiers unfamiliar with the hills valleys and ravines of San Francisco in its streets" the judge charged then for the first time would attempt to direct the citizens by that time panic stricken with choking smoke in their lungs to the exits which he would then choose for their evacuation" Judge Denman of the ninth United States Circuit Court of Ap-peals captioned his pamphlet Gen oral DeWitt's Ghastly Seven Months Plan Or Lark Of Planning To Prevent The Burning Alive Of The City's Women And Children Sick And Aged He said an attack on San Francisco seems likely and pointed to "repeated warnings of the secretary of war that there is a likelihood of a Japanese raid on some one of the Pacific Coast cities" General DeWitt's office had no comment on Judge Denman's protest but the regional Office of Civilian Defense which is respon sible for the protection of civilians in the eight western states had this to say There is a plan for San Francisco's evacuation It already is in the hands of those charged with its administration water to cover Serves hour in eight New Rules On Tire Rationing Are Received Merriment Rules At Bond Auction (Continued From Page One) By KATHERINE KITCHEN Who is the
