By "traitor" be meant Schusch- nigg who was stigmatized with this title by the press With Schuschnigg's 7 ROME March tur buient situation in Austria put the RomeBerlin axis under heavy strain tonight as Italy's grand coun cil reconvened An official announcement ac knowledged that Rome was in eon tact with Berlin keeping close watch on the rapidly changing pie ture The Ministry of Popular Culture however said that the contact merely was normal diplomatic in tercourse Its spokesman said Italy was exercising "every diplomatic reserve" The arrival of German troops in Austria towered over other mat ters among the councils agenda Foreign circles saw Italy on the horns of a dilemma and in a pre carious diplomatic position be cause of the Austrian situation Until ties between Italian and German foreign policy grew close the preservation of Austria's now imperilled independence had been a major point of Italian diplomacy1 But since the development of the Rome-Berlin axis diplomatic sources pointed out any appearance of Italian intervention on behalf of Austria would antagonize Hitler and Premier Benito Mussolini would be forced to abandon either Austria or Germany Italy not having completed her peace -making negotiations with Great Britain and having few other European ties therefore would face the peril of isolation should the axis break now these quarters said Italian protection of Austria in 1934 impelled her to rush troops to the Brenner pass as a warning against any Nazi coup after the assassination of Austria's Chancel lor Engelbert Dollfuss BIDING TIME Massing of Italian troops at the frontier now however was con sidered "most improbable" tin Paris Italy was said to have re jected a French suggestion of joint action) The Culture Ministry spokesman said his office would make no state ment on possible Italian troop movements Reports from Bolzano near the Halo-Austrian border however said no unusual movements were observed Communications across the Aus tro-Italian border being limited to only three practical through the Brenner San Cansisa and Tarvisio number of guards at the actual frontier are relatively small Italy however has from 100000 to 150000 troops at Milan Trieste Udine Bolzano and Bologna which might be moved to the border with lightning speed if necessary Although tension here increased noticeably as rumors and news poured in from Vienna Berlin and the rest of Europe the foreign press spokesman refused to enlarge on this brief oral statement: "In the face of contradictory re ports of a grave and delicate nature Italy is exercising every dip lomatic reserve The situation is so confused it is impossible to say anything" 12 HARRISBURG Pa March Senator Joseph Gut fey threw his support behind the I O-backed candidacy of Thomas Kennedy for Governor today in an open split with the Democratic organization in Pennsylvania Guffey long the leader of the party in the Keystone State made the break in indorsing the candidacy the Democratic party" Guffey said in Washington SUPPORTED Kennedy is lieutenant governor and secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers of America Gulley said that Kennedy in 1932 supported Roosevelt for the presidential nomination while Jones actively participated in a ''stop Roosevelt" movement He said Jones also opposed Governor Earle in 1934 "According to the rules of the game as know them" the senator said "Kennedy is much more entitled to the nomination than is Jones" Guffey's declaration immediately aroused speculation in politically-minded Washington It centered chiefly on the growing importance of Lewis I chief and head of the miners union and his potential power in the 1940 party conventions and elections In Harrisburg speculation turned at once to the effect of Guffey's stand on other State leaders and on county organizations It also centered interest anew on the four-way party scrap for the gubernatorial nomination which Governor George Earle has termed "a family argument" 3 Divorced BRIDGEPORT Conn March (iP) Harold I June wife of the fleet commander of the 1935 Byrd antarctic expedition won a divorce decree in superior court here today She charged the of finding the most suitable site for the hospital On his preliminary trip through North Carolina Mr Stratton will meet with local committees hear statements that they may have to make and all data that they may have to offer If the Veterans' administration follows its usual policy it will select a site of 600 to 1200 acres drained by a good stream of pure water where there is an elevation for the several buildings that would be constructed and where the climate is the most salubrious in the State ITINERARY While the rivalry in North Caro lina is considered intense for this iospital it is
