picking up and this trend should continue unless the cost of building again reaches the point where the prospective builder feels that it is too high said Kees ler secretary of the Mutual Building and Loan association yesterday Mr Kees ler explained that since the first of the year natural forces have been operating to cause renewed interest in home building He said that in the last nine years a tremendous shortage of homes has accumulated and that there must be some residential construction to fill the gap During the early part of last year he said many new homes were being built and others were being planned Unfortunately building costs took a decided upturn and this increased expense caused many to postpone beginning construction and resulted in a building slump Mr Kees ler said building materials have declined in price in the last few months and interest in home building is now increasing with more people planning to build now than has been the case at any time within the last 10 months "There is no shortage of money for financing on reasonable terms" Mr Kees ler continued For instance his association has $300000 immediately available for the construction and purchase of homes Other building and loati associations in the State also have large sums available and theperson who wishes to build a home will have no trouble in reasonable financing of his project he declared 3 i 1 JOHN TAYLOR Funeral services will be held at the home in Thomasboro this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for John 'W Taylor 66 who died at 8 o'clock Friday night after an illness of one month Rev Dogden will officiate and burial will be In the cemetery at Mulberry Presbyterian church BERLIN March 5 The whereabouts of the Rev Martin Nicmoeller leader of Protestant opposition to Nazi efforts to dominate the church still was a matter of speculation tonight despite reports he had been sent to a 'concentration camp by the German secret police A Propaganda Ministry spokesman aoswering inquiries said the militant pastor was being held in Berlin Others insisted he was at Sach senhausen concentration camp where he was taken after he was convicted of violating strictures or u3 Of his pulpit and deprecating Nazi officials The court however had set him free holding his seven months' sentence had been served while awaiting trial It was possible Pastor Niemoeller had been brought back to Berlin for further questioning by the Gestapo After his technical release the police had made his freedom conditional on his signing an undertaking to refrain from addressing public meeting except to deliver strictly religious sermons from his pulpit They also had insisted he make to communications abroad The pastor his friends say repeatedly has refused to promise anything he cannot reconcile with his conscience despite Gestapo Warnings of more serious punishment if he stirs up further popular excitement It was believed therefore the police still were trying to per suade him to abandon his unyielding attitude "for his own good" Some quarters expected that services tomorrow in his Jesus Christ us church in suburban Dahlem might be a demonstration by the congregation for its pastor 1 1 -t Ideal Site For Vets' Building The Morrow mountain section of Stan ly county would provide an ideal site for the proposed 'United States veterans' hospital authorized for North Carolina and the county commissioners will urge that it be given serious consideration before any other location is agreed upon it was learned yesterday The hospital could be built either on top of Morrow mountain from which it would have a commanding view of miles of interesting forest land and Lake Tillery at its foot or in the 1'alley at the south side of the mountain it was pointed out The climate is ideal and the view unequaled east of the mountains in western Carolina The hospital would be easily accessible since Highway No 27 crosses the area proposed by the commissioners 3 YORK COUNTY GETS FUNDS FOR FEDERAL WPA PROJECT The Observer Bureau 1230 Nil Press By Leased Wire WASHINGTON March James Richards of the Fifth South Carolina district announced today that President Roosevelt had approved a WPA project for York calling for $14240 of Federal funds Street improvement throughout the town with construction of gutters and sidewalks is planned by the project for which the town of York will advance an equal amount of money Mr Richards said construction will probably begin immediately after final approval of the grant by the comptroller general expected within a few days 8 "There are many young playwrights who become utterly fascinated with the contents of the dictionary" NORTH WILKESBORO March 5 Mrs John Baker traveled on skiis more than five miles of rugged Rocky Mountain country to get help when a mine explosion killed her husband and son and three other miners reads like the wildest of fiction While here visiting relatives of her husband and members of her own family in Ashe county Mrs Baker told the story The tragedy occurred at 4:30 on February 11 at a coal mine high up in the Teuton range near the Wyoming-Idaho State line Mr and Mrs John Baker and son Bill and Denver Holbrook all of Wilkes Henry Ashe of West Virginia and Ru land Ivy of Wyoming were doing development work in a coal mine Mrs Baker was doing the cooking and house work for the workmen Travel is recognized as a practical impossibility in the Teutons in the winter and on December 16 the mining party stocked up on supplies and settled down for the long winter when they would be cut off from the world HURLED 300 FEET Mrs Baker was in the camp shack at work when the explosion occurred and she ran toward the mouth of the mine On the way she found Henry Ashe who was thrown about 300 feet from the mouth of the mine by the explosion He was still alive She picked him up carried him into the house and placed him on the bed Though dying from internal injuries and from a broken leg with the splintered bone protruding through the flesh he told her that the others were in the mine and probably trapped alive He told her to get his skies and Instructed her as to how to put them on Skis are as difficult to manage as roller skates are to the beginner but she immediately began the five-mile trudge to a ranch owned by Sam and Rex Young The normal depth of the snow was four feet but many drifts had reached a depth of 20 feet Two sheep dog pups only three months of age beloved pets among the mine crew followed Mrs Baker who readily gives them credit for saving her from a lonely death in the snow Darkness fell before Mrs Baker had covered one third of the distance over the treacherous trail The night was bitter cold She fell many times in the snow and long before she reached the ranch she was suffering terribly from bruises and the skis had inflicted painful injuries on her legs 9 TRUE FRIENDS Mrs Baker said she grew very weak as she neared her destination and three times when she fell the young dogs nestled close licked her face and hands and tugged at her clothing until she would revive from her dazed condition and make another valiant effort to reach the outside world and help for her husband son and associates whom she thought were still alive many feet below the surface in the mine Within less than 50 yards of the Young ranch house she collapsed in the snow The men in the ranch house heard the dogs barking and went out to investigate In the warm room Mrs Baker revived sufficiently to tell what had happened Two men immediately began the return trip to the mine and being well experienced ski users they covered the five miles in an hour and a half Mrs Baker was seven hours on the way reach- ing the ranch at 11:30 o'clock When Rex and Sam Xoung reached the mine they found they could c16 nothing as rescuers Henry Ashe whom Mrs Baker had dragged into the shack and placed on a bed had died His finger nails were torn off and there were other evidences that he had suffered intensely before death Noting the crushed con- dition of his body they wondered at his being able to talk to Mrs Baker and instruct her as to how to go for help The mine was owned by an Idaho Falls company headed by Vail He formed a rescue party and went by plane to the Young ranch and by skis to the mine They found the mine a total wreck and the other four men including Mrs: Baker's husband and son had evidently died instantly when the explosion occurred The State mine: inspector said the explosion was caused by dust Snow plows were used to clear 78 miles of road in order to move the bodies Mrs Baker accompanied the bodies of her husband and son back to Wilkes where they lived until a year ago for burial Mrs Vail came with her GA FHA ADMINISTRATOR TURNS IN RESIGNATION WASHINGTON March An
