What could really be more farfetched and out of step? Nothing I'll admit and yet it is true I wonder how many of you noW scanning these lines have ever seen a roaring snarling aweinspiring thundering volcano in action)? No doubt a large number Maybe all of you Well you know exactly what I mean when I refer to them as snarling and awe-inspiring Back in 1935 Mauna Loa Hawaii's greatest mountain mass rumbled into action The Island of Hawaii as you doubtless know is nearly 200 miles from Honolulu Shortly after sundown the latter part of October that year a red glow flared up out of the sea to the south of Honolulu's scraggly weather-worn Diamond Head a crater said to have been dead these 100- 000 years or more That glow came from a gigantic phalanx of fiery fountains shooting out of the rifts of lava-scarred Mauna Loa Fo intains as huge as a Niagara falls going upward instead of downward Upward 500 feet or more five miles of them next day I flew over them i in a United States navy plane It was a gripping experience We were up 16000 feet nearly 4000 feet above the exploding tongues of molten lava Back in Honolulu after that 400- mile flight I wrote my story The lava stream coursed down the mountain and pooled in the saddle between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea The latter is a mountain that reaches back into the ice age Dead these eons of years and yet it is the neighbor of the world's most active volcanic system Through November and three weeks of December the great lava stream poured into this level piling up spilling over piling up there came a break December 24 1935 The break was toward Hilo a city of 15000 souls about 20 miles away Valleys and ravines led toward Hilo harbor The lava stream was in the valleys and ravines and moving rapidly December 26 found me up up by the lonely Humula sheep by the liquid stream that was untangling itself for a drive on civilization down by the coast Up there with Dr Thomas A Jaggar Hawaii's volcanologist and with other newsmen cameramen and hordes of wild-eyed Ira WE Chi most of as it shou holidays more rece of volcam would OW couple a Yuletide be more fi Nothing true I hoW scann seen a roa log thunc No doubt all of you what I mr as snarlim Back in greatest into actior as you di 200 miles after sun!
