Tissue samples from some largemouth bass taken from Medina Lake indicate the fish are typical of the Florida subspecies rather than the native variety. The tissue samples were analyzed for the chemical composition of enzymes by Dr. William Childers of the Illinois Natural History Survey.

Childers studied tissue samples of largemouth bass from eight Texas lakes. Different enzymes are not the only unusual thing about some of the Medina bass, says the Parks and Wildlife Department. In another study of 26 state lakes, scale counts were taken of fish, and the bass from Medina were the only ones to differ. The lake, which filled in 1913, produced the Texas state record, 13 pounds 8 ounces, in 1943, and has yielded many bass in the 10 and 12-pound class over the years. No one seems to know how Florida bass might have gotten into the lake if what they are.

Frankly, I hope Florida bass have not been in Medina all these years. If southern California lakes can produce a 20-pound 15-ounce Florida bass in, at the most, 14 years, 1 would not like to think that 13 12 pounds is the best Texas can do in more than half a centurv. By JIM HUTTON OF THE EXPRESS NEWS STAFF The dumping of winger Bobby Ridley by the San Antonio Thunder was more a result of off-field happenings than anything else, it has been learned.

The 31-year old Ridley, a soccer veteran who has played the game on four continents, was one of three professional forwards on the S.A. roster which also included collegian Chris Carenza. His cutting came as a surprise since the Thunder was short in manpower at that position and now figures to start the season with only three forwards. like to have one hurt Ridley more Thunder GM Mike Boyle said, we may go into the season with only In practice sessions, Ridley never appeared to overexert himself which is not surprising considering his knowledgable background and veteran status. The ability to stay with the hectic scrimmage tempo was no problem for the spirited Englishman.

Only the 28-year old Gerard Hijlkema, a striker, approaches experience in frontline play for the Thunder. Greek Peter Filotis is a 24-year-old winger and Carenza is a 22-year-old striker from Southern-lllinois. Ridley played with the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League last year. His team was primarily a collection of staid Englishmen with Ridley being the outspoken and unofficial spokesman. The Dallas press corps got a variety of comments from Ridley and several set well with the Tornado management.

Ridley spoke his mind and became a favorite of the press and Dallas soccer fans. All but Randolph and Cole (2 7 A A) are in 14-AAA, which has its district meet next Friday at East Central. The Jay Mustangs, winners in four straight meets this spring, take their show on the road this time as they journey to Seguin for the Matador Relays. The Mustangs are joined by Churchill and Roosevelt from the city.

That trio will go up against McCallum and Crockett, from Austin, New Braunfels and the host Matadors. There will also be a sophomore division at Seguin. publicized. Ridley also opened two soccer specialty shops in the Dallas area and expected to expand into other major cities, Houston and San Antonio. He worked for the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce coordinating their youth soccer program which took up much of his time off the professional soccer field. think I could have stayed another year in Ridley said late last month about his deteriorating situation there. From England Dallas coach and friend Run Newman had gotten Ridley to come to Big from Great Britain but their relationship had cooled so much that Ridley was seeing little playing time before Alex Perolli lured him to San Antonio.

Perolli was coaching the Los Angeles Aztecs at the- time and wondered why Ridley was not playing. He remembered the Englishman when he came to the Alamo City. That relationship ended with release April 1. Ridley said late last month: want to stay in this area (Texas) for three reasons. First, I have started my soccer business, I want to continue my work with the 3,500 kids in the North Dallas program, and I want to expand my business, 'and help this club grow increase interest in soccer in this Apparently, the Thunder decided that Ridley had too many reasons and interests which would conflict with afield ventures at North Ivast Stadium.

Ridley frequently was flying to his home in Dallas for business but said he planned to make permanent residence in San Antonio. He also was close to becoming a naturalized citizen with the assistance of having his job with the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Bobby Ridley lost his soccer playing job to over- involvement in businncss and youth soccer in Dallas. APRIL ONLY! 8 A.M.-6 P.M.—REFRESHMENTS!
