MARION WRIGHT THE LAFAYETTE Nash Motors invader into the lower price field enters its second year with smart new lines and a host of mechanical Improvements and innovations "Synchronized spring ing "Sealed and Touch are some of the mechanical features introduced on the 1935 LaFayette In 1935 the LaFayette will make an even stronger bid to substantiate its claim to being Big Car in the Lowest Price The 1935 LaFayette line is available in three special models and four standard models all on the same wheelbase and chassis of them have gone the way of all used and loaned things so that now only one battered memento Is in her possession safely tucked away in a box Catherine Daniels does outstanding sketches of horses reminding one of classical Greek drawings The class did clay modeling during the first half of the year in which Jerome Boxhorn excelled He has done two faces of "Comedy and which are to hang perma nentiy in the school room Several displays are given during the year and always keenly anticipated This course of Instruction 'in art is prepared for the seventh grade but is elective for the eighth and ninth However the art work done by Miss class of last year at Central high school has received the greatest recognition In this work there was need for creativeness ingenuity and precision mixed with cleverness It had to be finished for a certain use at a definite time All art students were engaged not just a "select to do this task so that it commenced and remains a group achievement To do something different and attractive was the main question Suggestions were requested by the instructor and the final result was to use paper thereby living up to the annual title of "Snips and Snip and cut and paste and decorate paper they did until all departments of the school (were represented in miniature Beginning with the school building and faculty there are the seniors in full cap and gown regalia with parchments and flowers the juniors complete in costumes and last day of school togs athletics clubs organizations all in paper caricatures white gray and black to carry out contrasts and pleasing tonal effects" These lend themselves to fine photography Needless to say students were enthusiastic They were creators Their various talents from figure to object construction from composition to artistic photography were recognized and utilized in production of the to quote Miss Lemmons But that is not the end When year she took the beloved models which made a lasting impression on all who saw and heard her story Mr A Pelikan director of art in the 'Milwaukee Wis public schools and director of Milwaukee Art institute asked for photographs for his own use also asking her to write about this work for Day a small magazine of which he is editor and is published by the American Crayon Co So there it is in the Dec '34-Jan 35 issue complete with reproductions for all to read "My students are thrilled to do their art work and feel that the time is too short I am grateful too for the friendly co-operation and understanding of Dr Gar-inger and Mr Aubrey Elliott In the absence of an art supervisor their counsel means so Only through engendering the love of art through the children will America establish Its own tradition and a child is never too young to be taught Through pictures they learn and retain it with greater ease So many teachers in the Charlotte schools ara devoting time to this most vital subject in addition to other studies and getting such fine results it seems incredible that there whole-hearted support from all quarters Jessie Voss Lewis noted artist of Hewlett and her husband Dangerfield Lewis have been the guests of his sister Mrs Wylie Moore They have one to Camden where an exhibition of her pastel portraits will open February 18 They intend to return to Charlotte for a longer stay and plans are under way for an exhibition of her work while here Mrs Lewis also brings the encouraging news that New York in fact America is fast becoming an art center ranking next to England whilo Paris ease into the background The best of teachers are to be found in this country and after ages of "treking" to Paris good to learn that this United States is coming to the fore in the development of art Believing that beauty should be its permanent development to hold fast to the saner and livable things and to discourage the freakish and abstract "Because so many atrocltes are being done in the name of art the sincere artists feel as if they would like to be known under some other With this genuine and genial woman art is no pretense It is her pleasure to express life and people as she sees them and her work is alive and beautiful done with ease and understanding Drawing for herself and four brothers was no effort To get a likeness was so easy One brother Franklin Brooke Voss is the outstanding painter of horses in America is internationally known- and going to Europe soon to take care of some commissions Three times he has painted that aristocrat of the racing world Man not to mention other famous horses of the race track polo field and of private ownership This brother and sister at the advanced age of five years knew and said they were going to paint one vowing allegiance to horses the other to portraits They dod not digress ever from their chosen profession "From the beginning faces and hands fascinated me and they continue to hold me Character is most interesting though draftsmanship is cf prime importance these rather than color get first and last attention I prefer to paint children but will do men and women Too I prefer to work in pastel and find it the preference of most people So since 1923 1 have devoted my time entirely to that Jessie Voss Lewis began serious study when 17 going to the Brang-wynwyn School of Art in England Spent sometime in the Students Art League of New York then studied with Bridgeman for anatomy Dun-anat for oils Kenyon Cox for antique and Chase for pastels He encouraged her to perfect her technique in this medium For 15 years she has been ensconced in the famous old Sherwood Studio at 57th street and many famous people enjoy her portraits of them Among her subjects were the four children of the Arthur Brisbanes It is easy to understand why any success is achieved by her in her training of youth in the fundamentals of art if one will visit Miss Mary Ruth Lemmons in her class room at Alexander Graham Junior High school do not concern myself so much with' the question as to whether my students have had correct training before coming to me or what they will get after they leave my class I taka them as they come to me and give them the Instruction which I feel they need and both the student and I get along Convinced too that her students have soma right of opinion they feel free to express themselves through questions comments and attempts in various mediums of paints drawings plaster paper There is alwayS a sense of ease and humor enjoyed between Miss Lemmons her pupils and their work and when an instructor can handle 569 students of varied temperments that exist in the groups which comprise the seventh eighth and ninth grades in school over a period of a week and come out smiling and full of plana for the future there is strength of purpose in that instructor I saw Miss Lemmons on a Friday afternoon She did not seem weary I arrived for this appointment just as school was dismissed and as usual there were a half dozen pupils about the desk getting final instructions papers and other needs for the week-end Long tables loaded with paints and accessories stretch along the wall on one side of the room where two boys were engaged in marble-ing paper A simple but interesting process of decorating blank sheets of paper which I was asked by the boys to witness Friendliness and sharing is a part of that classroom creed Tacked on the walls are samples of pen and ink drawings Japanese sketches hand tinted and done so well like to own one Pic tures clipped from magazines and newspapers of famous painters and their work3 and artists of the commercial world who are outstanding Several pen sketches attracted me and the query are they originals came out Miss Lemmons answered "all are copies because now we are studying the strokes and their various angles used by artists and to do that first we learn the single stroke then copy something the artist has done to perfect the technique Of course some prefer one way some another in the student group and this aids them to decide which stroke or combination of strokes they prefer when they attempt an All pictures were signed as copies COLORED DESIGNS Two rows of colored designs on one wall were of interest because of the precision and arrangement Members of the seventh grade class ha taken their initials and arranged designs in most beautiful combinations I thought at first that they were intended to be textile designs but no they were only the products of active and creative minds in class wrnrk However they could be used as patterns for cre-ton Another series was of a different nature and for the express purpose of provoking creativeness in the eighth and ninth grade classes They had taken a two-meaning word and developed a two-picture harmonious design to convey the meaning for instance a deep red flower in combination with a splendid pair of lips in lighter shade and an ear suggesting an ear of corn yellowish in combination with an ear for hearing the latter done in flash tone and so on all in tempera I suspect an ear of some student served as model in this instance Miss pupils have done leather work good enough for gifts Sometime ago they did a set of puppets with which a program was given in the school auditorium Most Ford Truck Sales Show Extraordinary Increase Upward Trend Expected to Continue With Moderate Let-Up in Mid-Summer springbase to so that the pas' sengers ride cradled between the axles automobile purchases this year and the beautiful interior ap' pointments of the new Ford V-8 to gether with its feather-touch ease of control both in steering and applying brake pressure as well as the smart modern appearance of the new Ford V-8 have proved of especial appeal to women who have undoubtedly been responsible for a part of the tremendous increase in volume of our business for the Ford V-8 trucks the highest since the 1927 peak indicates that general business throughout our entire territory is speeding up in great shape Truck operators today demand the speed and power of the new Ford V-8 trucks" Figures just released by Patterson manager of Ford Motor company Charlotte reveal thatpas senger cars sales for the first 10 days in February were in excess of the sales for the entire month of January in 1934 also a 200 per cent increase in Ford V-8 trucks In Jan uary At' the same time the Ford Motor company announced its January world production of V-8 cars and trucks totaled 105230 units Domestic production for February has been set to exceed that of January and present production of Ford V-8 units is in excess of 5000 daily all over the territory are reporting the greatest demand they have seen in many years for the new 1935 Ford said Mr Patterson "It looks like everybody in the Carolinas wants to own a new Ford V-8 We are literally swamped with orders for passenger cars of all types However our increased production is enabling us to meet the public demand for immediate delivery of all body types A check on our sales shows that the public appreciates the extra value built in to the new Ford V-8 Features such as safety glass all around without extra cost built luggage compartment comfort zone riding accomplished by extending the Miss Lemmons DETROIT Feb Pro ducers and distributors in the motor car industry expect a speed' ing up of sales activity to be one of the results of the manufacturers' plans to advance the new model announcement period this year The sales graph since January 1 has shown a steady upward trend and in the opinion of leading sales authorities this will continue with only a moderate levelling off dur ing the mid-summer months The sustained consumer demand that marked the early autumn months of 1933 and 1934 was something contrary to tradition in the industry but because of the trade belief that only a small part of the poten-ial demand of the last two years has been felt the general expectation prevails that retail require ments this year will carry well up to the new model announcement season Re-tooling plants for new types is not only an expensive undertak ing but one that requires several weeks and an advance commitment by each producer for the needed materials Thus if the 1936 types are to be in production on or before October 1 sales activ ity for 1935 must be concentrated in a much shorter period than for many years past In connection with the earlier new model announcement date trade circles are speculating as to whether changes next fall will not be less noticeable than during the last three or four years Several producers have been delayed In getting into full factory activity although the outlay for new production equipment has averaged up fairly well with the expenditures of previous years These makers stand to derive a smaller gross return from their new types if they swing along with others in shutting down on 1935 output early enough to have their next models in production by October 1 Talk about next types admittedly is entirely speculative but the working out of the new plan for equalizing employment in the industry is one of the chief topics of discussion in trade circles at the moment Distribution executives see more than a possibility for the SEE THE BEST PICTURES The program announcements made in this guide not only represent a considerable service for their patrons on the part of the owners of the Theatres listed but they also features combine to strengthen the 1935 claim to being the Car in the Lowest Price Field" The Nash-built LaFayette enters Its second year with a series of improvements and innovations new to the automobile industry and ex' elusive in the lowest price field Among the mechanical innovations is "Synchronized Springing This remarkable new system of spring suspension created by Nash engineers greatly reduces back seat bouncing and pitching without sacrificing strength by retaining sturdy conventional front and rear axles By the use of patented friction-controlling inserts which require no lubrication and which lit between the polished ends of the spring leaves Nash engineers have been able to build into all four springs a constant amount of friction With the need for lubrication removed and the amount of friction between the leaves the same all the time engineers were able for the first time to bring about a close synchronization cf and between front and rear springs than has hitherto been achieved Balancing the rate and periodicity of front and rear springs means that a bump in the road will deflect the front and rear springs equally and both springs will move up and down at the same speed before coming to rest This gives the occupants of the rear seat the same even-keeled ride found now in the front seat only on conventionally sprung cars where unbalanced springing causes a bump in the road to deflect the rear springs more than the front and permits the springs to move up and down at unequalled speeds "'Motorcycle 'Sealed Water and Car Roominess and are other features of the 1935 LaFayette line In addition to these featured mechanical improvements the 1935 LaFayette line has under gone a praceful process of modern! zation in design which enhances its reputation for beauty established so quickly last year following its New York introduction Again in 1935 Nash engineers have lent every effort to endow the LaFayette with fine car mechanical features and riding comforts No engineering effort cr production cost has been spared to make this second series of LaFayette cars live up to the traditional quality Big car beauty and roominess are again outstanding features of the new LaFayette Typical of the grace ful modernization of the car Is the streamlining of the hoed with long horizontal louvres blending into the radiator assembly which is the wide expansive dual construction steel bodies is newly styled upholstory Both front and rear seats offer unparalleled riding comfort and the new upholstery makes them equally pleasing to the eye Forward in the driving seat the airplane type of instrument panel and speedometer translucently illuminated together with a smart package compartment fulfills the external promise of luxury Again in 1935 LaFayette brings to the low-priced car field another group of expensive car mechanical features heretofore found only in cars costing many hundreds of dollars more Its 80-horsepower motor with down draft carburetion and full pressure lubrication is another of its big car features Noiseproofing of the 1935 LaFayette car has been accomplished through the use of Insulating materials that eliminate rattles squeaks and vibration at 71 distinct places in the car Further than tnis the Nash engineers to gether with the Seaman body eng! neers have made great strides in building a soundproof body that shuts out road noises and ordinary car sounds Steel floors hard wood body inserts asphalt and rub ber composite body insulator over all metal body parts improved muffler and silent ventilating equipment complete the noiseproofing of the 1935 LaFayette The motor on the 1935 LaFayette is an L-head high compression high turbulence six with single ignition from six aircraft type spark plugs It has a 3 1-4 Inch bore and a 4 3-8 inch stroke giving it 21776 cubic inches of piston displacement and an A A rating of 2535 horsepower By actual Dynamometer brake test it develops 80 horsepower at 3200 The motor is mounted by four point suspension on rubber with an additional rubber insulated stabilizer under the transmission insuring smoother and quieter operation Intake valves the other big car mechanicali features found on the 1935 LaFayette' Dual construction all steel bodies together with silent draftless clear vision ventilating Is another exclusive LaFayette feature
