its power thrusts with spectacular passing by Hal Johnston for a 40-to-20 victory over Washington and Lee before 24419 fans at the Orange Bowl Except for the third quarter it was just another football game KJ Jt I I Wife ORANGE BOWL STADIUM While waiting for some action in the of M-Washington and Lee game consider some aftermaths both pleasant and unpleasant to the great contest here last week with LSU the pleasant part first In a letter received Friday from Jimmie Davis governor of Louisiana: Mr Burns: want you and your readers to know how deeply grateful our entire Louisiana party feels regarding the treatment we re ceived during our recent visit to Miami and Coral Gables for the Miami-LSU football game "It would be difficult to Imagine a more gracious exhibition of hospitality Officials of the city the Chamber of Commerce the University the press and all the citizens with whom we came in contact accorded us every courtesy and kindness only discomfort on the entire trip was during those anxious moments at the game when the Hurricane threatened (and I do not have reference to the weather) want to express particularly our appreciation for the motorcade provided onr group and the efficient manner in which it was handled We regret the mishap snffered by one of the policemen leading this motorcade and trust that his Injury was not serions look forward to having you as our guest in Louisiana and having the opportunity to reciprocate at least a measure of your many kindnesses Davis of That letter shows the value of being nice to our visitors It emphasizes the value Miami's Hal Johnston scores from inside the one-yard line in the second period Friday night before 24419 fans at the Orange Bowl also pitched two touchdown passes as the Hurricanes trimmed Washington and Lee 40 to 20 for their seventh victory of the season Generals Scoring Trickery Wins Praise Great Run Thrills His Teammates LSU Routs Fordham Foe 40-0 Harding Is Pleased By Scoring LSU Reports $10 Charge For Steak Dinner BUT THERE are unpleasant angles too Here's an excerpt from the column of Bill Keefe sports editor of The New Orleans Picayune: "Meantime there is so little civic pride in Miami University's football program that the local school is having trouble getting name schools to come here for games The enormous costs of keeping a football team here two days precludes any possibility of a visiting team getting much more than an even break on expenses" LSU officials told Coach Jack Harding that the McAllister Hotel charged them $9 for one steak dinner and $10 for another one A McAllister executive was asked to give his side: absolutely false that we charged 10" he said "The LSU officials wanted a steak dinner for the entire party at midnight following the game We told them be expensive he-cause we had to keep our help overtime They also specified 16-ounce steak but the charge wasn't $10" "How about the $9 he was asked "It wasn't he replied "It was only $7 and I think some adjustment is being made on GETTING BACK to tonight game the Hurricanes had a narrow escape en route from the university to the stadium in their bus- A motorcycle cop Mopped traffic at Le Jeune road and the Trail but a motorist crossed at high speed and knocked the front bumper off the Hurricane bus thought Fd lost what little hair Fve got Trainer Bill Dayton reported Miami Beach knocked off thn Panthers 39-0 and Tech High I sent them home on the short 1 end of a 31-0 count Gesu played to a 6-6 tie Out of Boys Town's 327 points Halfback Jim Mitchell and Len Kroll fullback from Pensacola Fla have racked up 246 Co-captain Kroll has tallied 140 while Mitchell has accounted for 103 points Kroll who ends his prep career tonight holds the Nebraska State record for the 100 and 220 yard dashes and he is just as fast on the gridiron His change of- pace has left more than one opposing tackier with nothing more than a armful of air If asked to run inside he' uses all 162 pounds top weight in the Boys Town backfield to crash through the lines Mitchell figures just a slight hit slower than Len but pos-sesses the ability of running just 1 as well to either side Knowing what his club -is up against Valibus will change from his usual infantry type of attack' to that of airborne 1 For from the opening kickoff he probably will have halfbacks Ed Cathels and Sol Whidden filling the air with passes Cathels start at left half is a right-handed tosser while his understudy Whldden pitches from the port side Valibus has hopes along with those that his chunkers connect that the Miami weather and his 19-pound-weight advantage will take its toll on the Boys Town scoring machine Valibus is confident that his boys will play their best for this is the game of the year for them This was indicated Friday night when the small SS Peter and Paul student body staged a real "big pep rally Pos BOVS le Puchlnski (148) It 1 88 A P-Coleman (162) Dopkin (185) McCloskey (160) Ortega (168) Gunnell (177) but that razzle-dazzle period packed enough action to satisfy even the most thrill-starved spectator There was little Indication of the things to come in the first half when the Hurricanes methodically ground out 14-to-6 lead en route to their seventh win of the autumn But the scoring lid was ripped completely off by a fonr-touch-down blast during that 15-minute period-as Miami scored three and the Generals one In order of their appearance on the scoreboard a sample of the events provided for the customers Johnston rifled a 45-yard scoring shot to end Andy Novak who went across after a breath-taking catch The Hurricanes paraded 53 yards In a drive which featured bone-shattering line smashes Washington and Lee's reserve halfback Bill Wood hauled In a flat pass from quarterback Dick Working and dashed 76 yards tot a TD Hal and David Eldredge teamed to establish an all-time Miami scoring pass record 73 surprising yards Both teams managed to infiltrate the end zone once more during the final period but it was strictly anti-climax after the hair-raising third chapter Our Mr Johnston with the help of his sticky-fingered receivers put on just about as good an aerial show as any Hurricane toss-er has ever displayed After failing with the fipst of his six tosses the accurate armed Californian completed five in a row for a total of 154 yards Both the U-M forces and the aerial-minded Generals wound up their night's aerial work with 50 per cent completions The Hurricanes clicked for 165 yards on six of 12 heaves while the outmanned losers hit with 12 of 24 for 161 yards The additional 258 yards picked up by the Hurricane leather luggers on the ground gave our side 423 yards their best offensive effort of the season It was the most points scored by a Miami team since Camp Gordon was routed 52-6 in 1943 Miami moved 74 yards to score the second time it gained possession of the football The actually was launched when Bryan Bell jr interfered with wingman Tony Yo-vicsin on a 28-yard pass to the W-L 39 Three plays later another overhead Johnston to Yovicsin gobbled up 18 yards and gave the Hurricanes a' first down on the 10 Bob McDougal deposited his 200 pounds of fallback power against the Generals' left guard for four yards then shot the remaining six through a gaping hole at left tackle Ken Hawkins converted and the Miami reserves flooded the field The substitutes up to throttling the Virginians and late in the first quarter the visitors began rolling They required 15 tedious plays to cross the goal but they finally made it when quarterback Mike Boyda leaped high behind the scrimmage line and poured a three-yard pass into end Jim hands in the end zone Bob Riley's conversion effort was low and Miami led 7-6 Coach Jack Harding dispatched his first stringers back to the battle field with the admonition "get a touchdown seen enough of these close ones this The Hurricanes obliged their boss Starting from the Miami 43 Johnston skidded 10 yards off left tackle before lateralling to center Harvey James who charged 10 more to 'the General 37 Johnston grabbed four yards then McDougal sailed 18 up the middle before fumbling Tackle A1 Adler recovered and the drive was still alive Next Eldredge squirting through would-be tacklers' mitts darted 13 yards to the two McDougal was good for one then Johnston followed a wail of interference off right tackle Turn To Page 17-A Column 2 Cbnck Klein the injured Hurricane guard was at the game in civilian clothes Bob Warden former Andrew Jackson player and John Grathwoll were promoted from the squad for this game Dr Kitchins the Hurricane's physician came back from a fishing trip in the keys to see this game He'll leave today to rejoin George and Jim McPherson of Birmingham Henry Pole and Smith aboard the South Wind Paulk Cassidy was on the sidelines in his wheel chair as usual rooting for Ernie Settembre Kirkland still on crutches was present too He stopped me to predict that Georgia Tech will beat Georgia Saturday week Maybe so AND NOW for the game David El dredge ran hack 13 yards with the kickoff and fumbled but recovered at the 10 It looked bad for the Hurricanes when Bill Krasnai's punt was blocked and the Generals took over on Miami's 26 The Hurricanes were too stout and pretty soon they marched to their first tonchdown 1 It was pretty dull for a spell although the Hurricanes resorted to laterals when checked Inky Mazejka went to the tS and when he lateraled the ball to Ed Injaychock he went on for four more yards After the Generals scored tho Hurricanes launched another drivean the second quarter By The Associated Fress BATON ROUGE-La Louisiana State football team got the Bowl jitters Friday night but still had plenty enough punch to earn a 40 to 0 victory over weak eleven The shivering crowd of 15000 LSU supporters saw the highly favored Tiger machine sputter oo casionally in the first half in an over-anxious effort to run up a one-sided triumph which w-ould bring added prestige and attract the attention of the New Dav game promoters But the T-formation attack worked to perfection when the Tigers really got going and the visiting Rams were never in the running Fordham had to get along without the services of Joe An-drejeo captain and ace halfback who is sidelined by a punctured ear drum But Joe Ososki Don Cameron and Stan Bloomer carried the load in acceptable fashion and Fordham actually outplayed the winners dqring the scoreless second period LSU put the game under control early with a two-touchdown splurge in the first period Fullback Red Knight banged over for the first score from tbe one-foot line to climax a 36-yard advance A 29-yard march highlighted by a 20-yard pass from A Tittle to Clyde Lindsey brought the second touchdown Knight made it over from the four Fordham got two scoring chances in the second period Jim Cason fumbled once on the LSU 38 and George Reiss recovered for the Rams The big LSU line took over and stopped the Rams cold Then Cameron intercepted a pass from Tittle and Fordham had the ball on the LSU 13 with less than a minute to go until intermission Bloomer conect with two passes however and he was dumped when he tried to run on the final play of the period Tittle hit Lindsey with a four-yard touchdown pass in the third period to end a 45-yard parade The Tigers put over three more scores on the tiring visitors in the fourth A 25-yard pass play Tittle to Lindsey brought the first and a 21-yard' heave Ray Coajtes to Cason accounted for the second The third came on the final play Cason to Mel Lyle for 13 yards -Herald Staff Photo HAL JOHNSTON University cf Miami tailback is tackled by Washington and Lee's Halfback Charlie Harrington and Tackle Andy
