GENERAL MECKLENBURG Mr II Foider Chairman Board of Governors Mecklenburg Sanatorium My Dear Mr Fowler: Somtme ago on the basis of complaints that had reached me from some of the patients in the Meiklenburg sanatorium I suggested that some sort of treatment be given the driveway ln front of the hospital to eliminate the possibility of dust being stirred by traffic and wind Driving by there a few days ago I noticed that nothing has been done to improve the situation It Is not very dusty to be sure as the earth and sand driveway that loops in front of the building has a type of surface that does not produce a great amount of dust Nevertheless a small amount of dust is annoying and injurious I should think to tubercular patients Some dust must arise from the driveway in very dry weather w'hen traffic moves over it while the wind is blowing to the discomfort of patients occupying screened porches GENERAL MECKLENBURG STARTS OX PAGE ONE the annua report of Capt Chas Farmer commander of the state highway patrol as published last Thursday morning in which he recommended that 300 patrolmen be employed by the state protect the lives and property of our citizens on the No stronger argument for a substantial increase In the patrol personnel could be presented than the figures contained In the report for the year ending June 30 showing that 908 persons were killed and 6482'Injured In 3855 accidents and also showing that the patrol cost the taxpayers 3465101 les than nothing In other words the patrol small as it is collected for the state five times the appropriation which the legislature made for its maintenance Practically all of the $465101 revenue derived from the activities of the NOW In Charleston Where Ocean Breezes Blow The FRANCIS MARION the records could not show how many fatalities and monument site this fall injuries were pretented by the activities and by the existence of the GENERAL MECKLENBURG patrol One guess perhaps is as good as another but in these days of speed and recklessness it is not a wild flight of imagination to 3 Arthur Wcartl suppose that the number killed might have been 1800 instead of 908 IftfayQj Charlotte If there had been no patrol to interfere or to be feared My Dear Mayor AVearn: A hen one reads the report of the activities of the patrol of fewer Y'our insistance that the police department see that taxicab drivers men than there are counties in the state patrolling 48000 miles of observe the traffic laws Is commendable Recently I have heard road one wonders what might be accomplished by an adequate patrol considerable complaint because of alleged recklessness on the part of 300 men as recommended by Captain Farmer An adequate high- of drlvers for certaln taxlcab companles Just the past week a citizen way patrol is one of the urgent needs of North Carollsa and this is of charlotte was complaining that certain of these drivers pull from a subject that should be given the most thoughtful consideration by the curb nto the traffic lanes and dash ln and out hUher an(J thItheri in the streets without regard for safety or the laws It was only a all those who will compose the next legislature Mr Jeffrcss Chairman State Highway and Public Works Commission My Dear Mr Jeffrcss: A citizen who recently traveled that way informs me that a fine job Is being done in straightening sharp curves widening regrading and otherwise improving highway No 26 between Roaring Gap and Sparta The narrow mountain road that was rough and poorly graded as I am informed called for the improvement that Is under w'ay and about which my informant spoke with enthusiasm GENERAL MECKLENBURG ri Say Saw It in The Thank You! 3 AT JOHNSTON'S GENERAL MECKLENBURG day or two later that you issued a statement on the subject describing their practices in almost the same words as my friend had been using in telling me of his observations He made it clear however that his complaint did not apply bo all the taxicab drivers but only to those in the service of certain companies GENERAL MECKLENBURG at flmijiiuf low Cost!
