at Durham during the afternoon which was rather drab and punchless but the nightcap was of another stripe Things happened Strange Al) and almost unbelievable things 'LlAKELY Pli The Davidson had command of the hall game from the opening whistle With Lafferty Ed Armfield Tom CorI bin and Fred Dennis collaborating in the backfield Lafferty almost always with the ball under his arm the Wildcats were forever on the jump The Wolfpack on the other hand was an imposing looking array of athletes The Notre Dame shift clicked well the team handled the ball with deftness the timing was there But the attack was plain and simple to the well-coached Davidsons who throttled the enemy's advances as they cracked the red shirts right and left many times before they reached the line of scrimmage Craftily the Wildcats used three effective defensive set-ups shifting from one to the other State was guilty of some weird mental football Once Ed Berlinaj nabbed a punt as he stood on his goal line with the Davidsons swarming all over him He got it out seven yards when 20 yards would have been the gift of the code State had the ball as the first half closed with the seconds ticking away and persisted in ramming the line right On up to the gong Ed Entwifitie muffed a punt in the environs of his goal line instead of letting it roll the lapse paving the way for the lone Davidson touchdown Armlield made the score with incredible ease Davidson made only two substitutions Its backfield was kept Intact throughout One State player after another was jerked with replacements sent in by flocks State lost the game but gave the crowd a thrill with its spectacular aerial charge late in the game Cowboy Robinson was sent in to do most of the passing He fired some beauties One long lateral-forward pass that clicked Berlinski to Schwerdt to Derlinski was fancier than anything the famed Colgate passing team showed at Durham State got its two points on a safety which the Davidsons willingly granted during that hectic spirited last half drive which all but brought home the spoils Berlinski was State's biggest threat He was lugged off the field Injured late in the game The Wildcats escaped unhurt Coach Rookie Joe Dimaggio proving a sensational success and Lou Gehrig having his best year developed a tremendous batting punch and tight fielding defense while the Tigers took a series of bad breaks in JVay rrwENty SIX THOUSAND saw the Durham game The press box I and announcing booths were jammed with celebrities Seven bands played There was a parade in the morning with one business concern sporting an elaborate Rose Bowl float which must have been highly embarrassing to Coach Wallace Wade and his Duke forces The Dukes acarcely showed anything in the game to begin any Rose Bowl talk at this early hour But they were good enough Andy Kerr's famed razzle-dazzle really proved to be a simple double wing-back attack that as more powerful than deceptive To the crowd's surprise the maroon-clad gridders from the Chenango pulled no rabbits out of hats did not vanish either their helmets or the football The mad magicians from the New York lake country were Just fair well-reached football players who lacked the experience and reserve strength of their opponents The Dukes themselves were not eurprised Duke scouted Colgate as early as lest year and the Duke scouts saw the Kerr razzle-dazzle was at the basis orthodox The Duke scouts thought the Blue Devils would be a better team What Colgate did have was a mighty good fast charging line with good backers-up And it had in Whit Jaeger a runner who was always a threat But Duke had its Ace Parker Honey Hackney and Eric Tipton who also could run Tipton scored the lone Duke touchdown It was anybody's ball game during the first half In the second half Duke was more cohesive more spirited showed more punch With such fellows as Dan Hill and Joe Brunansky and Joe Cardwell leading the line attack and defense the Dukes put on their big push It was a typical early season game The Dukes haven't arrived yet But they are coming After the game Coach Wade at home informally to reporters and Intimate friends said: ''We didn't show much punch I hope we'll get better I was mighty glad to see Carolina win out I understand Carolina has an awfully good squad And Ray Wolfe seems to be a dandy fellow They'll be ready when they get to us Don't worry about that And I was also glad that Colgate got away with that lateral pass punt return since the team had been advertised so much as a razzle-dazzler" ATLANTA' Sept as a season Forest in Charlotte's new stadium Late in the first period Dallas Morris Deacon back returned a Carolina punt 88 yards for a touchdown and then kicked the extra point Many thought it nice that a Charlotte boy scored the first touchdown in the new stadium But the Tar Heels who were sluggish during the early part of the scrap did not think it nice And Carolina supporters grew anxious as the game rolled on and the seven-point Deacon lead held The Carolinians lacked the timing in their offense The formations introduced by the new 'coaching staff headed by Ray Wolf failed to click It was a far cry from the smooth running offensive machinery of the Snavely regime That touchdown run caught the Tar Heels flatfooted They were also caught flatfooted on several quick kicks by Hobo Daniel booting the ball from short punt formation They looked considerably less than a four-alarm fire while the Deacons were smart and cagey and played a bang-up game Before the contest was over however Tar
