At noon the Dow Jones average of 30 industrials was up 2.06 at 759.93.

It had been off fractionally earlier. Advances took a commanding lead over losers on the New York Stock Exchange. Previously in the day they had been lagging behind. Some analysts attributed the firming trend to short covering -the buying of stock to replace securities borrowed and sold earlier. Steels and electronics were lower, while motors, rubber issues, mail order retail, aircaft, utilities, and rails were up.

Metals, chemicals, oils, and airlines were mixed. At noon, The Associated Press 60-stock average was up 0.5 to 259.3. geant a new pot, painted in camouflage green and brown.
