Tonight in the Commercial League the Newsies play Southern Bell Telephone Elliott meets Post Office and First National Bank battles Smith Richardson and Conroy By DINTY DENNIS Sports Editor For The Herald The Hurricanes of the University of Miami came roaring out of a three-quarter punting and defensive duel last night at Miami Stadium to stage a sensational and unexpected offensive in the closing period and turn back the invading Terriers of Massachusetts 17 to 0 It was a series of scoring thrusts which came as surprisingly as the real hurricanes before the weather bureau chain started tracking the winds to their Caribbean homeland Once it started the full force was felt and before the scoring storm had passed the Terriers of Massachusetts were left breathless amazed and members of a shattered and decisively defeated football aggregation The victory was the third consecutive and carried on a notable schedule under new coaches which was off to a ragged and unimpressive start Books could be written on that last quarter The chilled crowd of about 4000 patrons who had huddled shivering for three quarters waiting for a score came from their seats wildly at the first marker field gorl from the 15-yard stripe and remained standing and cheering for the remainder of the game because touchdowns were manufactured rapidly and In an almost unbelievable fashion It could be labeled one of those widely baliyhooed Dame and definitely marked the 1935 University of Miami eleven the Roaring Hurricanes The period opened with the ball on Boston's 45 In possession Boney substituting for the Injured Baker In the backfield ploughed through the line for first down on Boston's 34 Another line play failed and then Ott's aerial was Intercepted as McNamara scampered back to his 33 The Boston backfield fumbled but Spivak recovered for a 4-yard loss The forwards stopped the hard driving Famiglietti and then JV chad McNamara on his punt to psRally block the effort as the ball wVut out on Boston's 37 However offensive was unable to gain and a punt into the end zone gave Boston the ball on their 20 The Terriers-came back 10 yards but then Patsison fumbled and Rose another late starter for Miami recovered on Boston's 27 From there on things really started to happen Boney and Gostowski In three plays made first down on 12 The line stiffened and with the count fourth and 6 yards to go Petrowski' the same lad who beat the highly-touted Wake Forest with his toe dropped back With Ott holding on the 15-yard stripe Pete split the up-righr for the first score of a bitterly fought encounter and Miami was In front 3 to 0 It appeared sufficient for victory with about eight minutes left to play but later events proved it was only the sparkplug for even greater things As Masterson still adding prestige to hi3 recent sensational play kicked off Cleverly of Boston fumbled but recovered on his own 14 However on the next play he made a first down round his right end to the 24 Cleverly ind McNamara added 6 yards in two end runs and then McNamara punted to Ott on 32 but Johnny stepping in great form throu shout the night came back to Boston's 49 Boney got 3 at the line and then Miami received a 5-yard penalty for excessive time in the huddle With the ball on his own 49 GlogO'VSki the warrior who was playing hs third game as a member of FROGS AND MUSTANGS TO clear the stands Masterson had kicked off again to Holgerson Boston substitute back who came hawk 15 yards to his 33 Holgerson frantically directing and engineering a pass attack shot the ball into a squad of Terriers and it was good for 4 yards Another long aerial followed but this one Ott intercepted under full speed With an open field ahead and the Terriers caught flat-footed Ott trekked 43 yards untouched for another touchdown Petrowskl's accurate toe again clicked for a placement and Miami was in front 17 to 0 The game ended five plays later as Spivak of Boston was rushed backwards before he could toss the ball to receive a 16-yard loss and place the ball on Boston's 22 as the final whistle sounded About the first three quarters As has been reported It was principally a punting duel with both lines showing great defensive power In the first period Miami made the leading scoring threat the Hurricanes going from Boston's 42 to the 20 where McNamara intercepted a shovel pass to end the drive In this march the Hurricanes thrilled the patrons with a shovel pass over the center of the line Ott to Captain Leonard for 14 yards On the next offensive of the Terriers Baker made a tackle of Livingston who had retrieved a fumble ball and had to be carried from the field He was rushed from the stadium on a stretcher soon afterwards admid wild cheers as Charlie had been the sparkplug of the Miami team to this point It was later learned he had received a badly torn knee muscle The quarter ended with the punting battle raging and the ball halting on SELECTIONS Crowd of 40000 Customers Expected To Witness Important Football Game This Afternoon Between Southern Methodist and Texas Christian BE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT WORTH Texas Nov Undefeated and untied Southern Methodist and Texas Christian candidates for the Rose Bowl classic had their aerial machines tuned tonight for tomorrow's Southwest grid classic here before nearly 40000 fans It is regarded here as almost a certainty that the winner of the Southwest Conference championship battle will receive a prompt invitation to Stanford's New Year's day party at Pasadena At Dallas Coach Matty Bell worked feverishly with the Methodists running his makeshift Mustang backfield through daring pass formations The Jack rabbit legs of little Bobby Wilson 147-pound halfback carry the hopes of Mustang backers The piston right arm of Sammy Baugh pass-slinging sensation and Jimmy Lawrence's bull-like line thrusts were Texas Christian's best bets Hotel lobbies were filled with visiting sports writers from coast to coast Both teams have smothered 10 opponents and the records leave little to choose The 'powerhouse lines of Southern Methodist has allowed but three touchdowns two of them on passes The likewise have anchored opposing backs Every member of the Chrisian squad is ready said Coach Leo (Ditch) Meyer The Methodist team that walloped the University of California at Los Angeles 21-0 In an Meet Mississippi State (BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Louisiana State's powerful gridiron machine triumphant eight consecutive times after dropping a close decision to Rice In Its opening game rolled against Green Wave today with the championship of the Southeastern Conference within Its grasp The wizardry and co-ordination of attack exhibited by the Louisiana Tigers throughout the season made them an odds-on choice to defeat Tulane and take outright possession of the conference title This traditional conflict dates back to 1893 and always has been chsrged with dynamite Often the favored eleven has fallen before the underdog In the lengthy series Tulane has won 15 games Louisiana 13 and 4 resulted In ties Louisiana with four victories over conference opposition is the only team undefeated in Southeastern ranks Tulane has been conquered by Auburn snd Georgia the latter team being trounced easily by Louisiana State In Thanksgiving day battles Vanderbilt upset the favored Alabama Crimson Tide 14 to 6 to clinch runner-up honors in the conference with five victories and one defeat and Kentucky surprised with a 27-to-0 romp over Tennessee the first triumph for the Blue Grasa grldders over their ancient foe since 1925 Should Tulane turn back the Louisiana eleven Vanderbilt would move to the top of the standings having won one more game than the Baton Rouge team taking a shellacking However there Is that knowledge that IP the Gators should rise to the heights and aurprlse Auburn it would go down In the records as one of the major upsets for 1935 season That will be In the mind of every Gator this afternoon as well as the desire to give a creditable showing In this first conference exhibition In Miami Noting that the 1935 grid season has set a new high for the unexpected this may be another one of those days and what an achievement It would be for possibly one of most unfortunate and disappointing football aggregations Metropolitan Miami whether the Gators are beaten or not will be watching the performance of her boys In that line will be A1 Hickland the former Ida Fisher star of Miami Beach who now gives the Gators 240 pounds of action at left by doctors Beckwith has refused and at least part of game will see Jack doing his bit for the Gators and keeping faith with his Miami friends who want to see him trek a Miami gridiron again The
