the teams put up when they meet In their annual warfare Two years ago Miami went up to Fort Lauderdale with a team which was rated as one of the strongest of recent years and the Flying Ls rated to go down by about two touchdowns battled Miami to a scoreless tie Last season the Stingarees met the blue and white players down here and the greatest football team Miami ever turned out had to battle Locals By LUTHER VOITZ Sports Writer for The Herald 'Young Eddie Caldwell the boy who goes places with a football tucked under his arm out Ponce de Leon way pulled one out of the fire for his mates yesterday as the Cavaliers came back after a disheartening first period to defeat Fort Pierce 21 to 13 Sharing the light with Caldwell was a ehifty Fort Pierce youngster Specs Kinsey who did Just about everything a good back can do It was Kinsey who cot the Cavaliers In trouble In the game and it was Caldwell who pulled hie team up from behind and made them winners But Eddie had plenty of help The scrappy Ponce de Leon line functioning better than It has all season opened up big holes for him to race through and Dick Lewis and Willie Moore contributed some nice ball toting As for Specs' mates they help so much The inexperienced youngsters in the line had a lot of trouble in trying to open holes the ends got boxed time after time and the other Fort Pierce backs with the exception of Taylor who gained at times didn't help Kinsey very much This was how it all happened Ponce de Leon forced Fort Pierce to 'punt shortly after the kickoff and the Cavaliers got started In their usual fashion Caldwell and Lewis did of the ball carrying and went from their 45-yard line to Fort 30-yard stripe in quick order Then the Fort Pierce boys held and three plays failed to gain so Caldwell passed Just then Kinsey stepped Into the picture He speared the oval on his own 20-yard line broke for the side line and up the field They ran him down on Ponce de Leon's 30-yard line So after a play had failed to gain Specs took It and romped 10 yards for a first down Next he bucked It to the 8-yard line for another first down and after a penalty for offside had been Inflicted on 'he Cavaliers Kinsey outran the Ponce de Leon boys for the remaining three yards and a touchdown Heskew place kicked the goal Then Fort Pierce kicked off held the Cavaliers and Lewis punted to Fort Pierce's 40-yard line On the first play Kinsey started out around right end swerved In off tackle cut back to the sidelines on the left and romped 60 yards for the second score placement was blocked Shortly after the second quarter started Dick Lewis broke loose and raced 45 yards behind perfect Interference only to be brought down by Kinsey on the 5-yard line Caldwell gained four yards Lewis was stopped without a gain and then Dick shot over the middle of the lint for the touchdown Caldwell made the point on a wide Four Teams Unbeaten In South- ern Conference In Two Big Games IB? whose sidelines were politics and second-hand law libraries stepped up on the stand In Supreme court today for the first round of his light to take a $500000 chunk out of Gene Tunney's bank roll In the morning he gave the fight fans and kids who gathered round quite a bit of action and lots of entertainment He settled back In the afternoon to the business of dodging left Jabs and rolling out from under right crosses proffered In cross-examination by Emory Buckner former United States attorney and chief counsel for the former heavyweight champion He proved adept At 4 o'clock when court adjourned until Monday Mr Buckner after two hours of cross-examination had landed only one punch That was when he produced In court a contract for a Tunney-Dempsey fight which he said Tunney and Tex Rickard had signed on January 20 1926 and Mara testified that away along in April he had not known of the existence of the contract although the papers had been full of It Mr Buckner produced photo-static copies of The New York Times of January 1926 purporting to carry the story of the contract but Mr Mara slipped away from that one He read those stories because The New York Times was one newspaper he did not read Much of the cross-examination revolved around a visit Tunney and his friend Jimmy Eagleton "the Irish who used to sing him to sleep at the training amps paid to Mara's office in April 1926 It was at this meeting Mara contends that Tunney entered Into a verbal agreement whereby Mara was to get 10 per cent of his purse should he obtain a fight with Dempsey and 25 per cent of his earnings should be defeat Dempsey end become champion a contract which Mr Mara believes Is now worth In the light of subsequent events about $500000 Tunney has declared that he entered into a contract with Mara only on the ground that Mara get the New York state boxing commission to reverse its decision whereby Dempsey was barred from boxing In the state until he fought Harry Wills and thereby make possible a Dempsey-Tunney bout New York Since the fight took place In Philadelphia Mr Tunney has pointed out quite obviously Mr Mara failed to live up to his end of the agreement On the stand today Mara denied that Tunney even mentioned to him at that April meeting the fact that he hed a contract to fight Dempsey let alone that he -wanted It fixed so he could fight Dempsey In New York "He wanted ms to co-operate assist and advise Mara insisted over and over to repeated queries "He said he hoped to get a fight with Dempsey and that there would plenty of money in It for all of us if he he want you to get the Dempsey fight for Buckner asked "No he Just wanted me to co-operate assist and advise Mara said "Did you get the match for say I contributed to his getting "Are you prepared to say he have obtained It without your "That would be hard to smiled Mara Mara claimed credit for getting Tunney his fight with Tommy Gibbons in the summer of 1925 -Mara also said he persuaded Charles A Stoneham principal owner of the Giants snd the Polo Grounds to promote the Tunney-Glbbons fight and that on his advice Stoneham sent Jimmy De Forrest Jack Dempsey's former trainer and at that time matchmaker of the Polo Grounds out to the Twin Cities to guarantee Gibbons $100000 for the match with Tunney Another thing Mara said he did for Tunney was to use Stoneham who had agreed he said to promote a fight between Tunney and Wills in the early summer of 1926 as a wedge while Tunney was negotiating with Rickard for a fight with Dempsey and fight fans at the ringside today agreed that this was smart tactics EVERY POINT COUNTS IN SYSTEM SOUTH BEND Ind Oct 81 VP) Norte Dame football teams are expected to do everything well But the polnt-after-touchdown record of the
