Hurricanes A narrow margin of one point here Saturday sent the University of Miami Hurricanes down to defeat for the third straight time at the hands of a South Carolina Gamecock eleven The score was 7 to 6 And it was John Oespovich who had been kicking goals for Miami all year long who missed the extra point which would have meant at least a tie for the Hurricane forces His kick from place was just wide of the bars in the third quarter after Lefty Schemer had whipped a beautiful pass to Frank Paskevich over the goal line Earlier in that quarter South Carolina had scored too on a pass play Stroud to Blouin and Joe Gru-gan had kicked the extra point a point which eventually won the ball game for the Gamecocks Although beaten the Hurricanes played some good football and out-gained the Gamecocks in just about every department of the statistics The losing Hurricanes made 15 first downs to South 8 They drove up and down the field all afternoon to gulp up a total of 269 yjirds On both passes and scrimmage plays the Gamecocks were able to gain only 201 yards The Hurricanes many times during the day threatened to cross the goal line Six Other Chances 'Besides their touchdown in the tbffi quarter Miami made at least sfxTtengerous goal line threats But It just their day scoring it teemed Although there was no scoring in the opening half there were probably more thrills in those two periods than South Carolina football fans had witnessed in all the rest of the Gamecock games this season Some 5000 fans witnessed the battle It was purely half of offensive football with at least six dangerous scoring threats being made by the two ball clubs Four of those threats Were made by the Hurricanes who made 10 first downs during the half and piled up 150 yards from scrimmage The game was only in its childhood when the Hurricanes had made their first scoring threat It was big Tom Kearns the sophomore tackle who gave Miami the chance when he recovered a South Carolina fumble on the opening kickoff on South 23-yard line Three yards at center by that powerhouse fullback Terry Fox and a 5-vard dash between guard and tackle by slippery Carl Jones put the ball on South Carolina's 15 Corcoran and Fox made it a first down on the South Carolina 11 A few' minutes later when Jones failed to gain more than 5 ards Sputh Carolina took the ball on its own 5 But before the half ended there was plenty of fireworks near the promised land Gamecocks Score Early It was not long after the third quarter had started the Gamecocks first scoring blood A bad kick bv Bill Steiner eventually led to the score Bill booted one 11 yards to the South Carolina 46 Passing the wily kind of attack Because of Thanksgiving holidays the South Carolina band did not attend and the Gamecocks student body was rather slimly represented South Carolina was asleep on the opening kickoff letting kick roll around until Tom Kearns fell on it The kickoff is a free ball and can be recovered by the kicking side band stole the show between the halves with their marching formations including the bow and arrow stunt In the last five minutes of the first half South Carolina moved from its own 16 to 15 where the Hurricanes staged a legitimate steal of the ball from Grugan after the latter had caught a pass In four plays Miami went clear to the 20 before the half ended A bit of sound offensive strategy backfired for Miami to give the Gamecocks their first score With the ball in midfield and second down and three Steiner tried a quick kick with the wind behind him w'hich had the Gamecocks flat-footed but the ball slithered off foot and went only 14 yards Carolina tallied in four plays Miami came right back reeled off a first down got into Carolina territory but had to punt following a holding penalty and a both teams offside which cost the Hurricanes about 20 yards blockers failed on their assignments in several pass plays and both Jones and Corcoran were tossed for big losses The Hurricanes took a long chance in the third when on fourth down and seven to go Noppenberg faked a punt and fired a pass to Corcoran who leaped high to take the ball on the 20 The touchdown followed The officials booted one as the fourth quarter started w'hen they figured the 50-yard line was the Miami 45 and so the Carolinians who had just returned the kickoff to their own 43 started the final quarter on the Miami 4S Coach Harding protested but lost the argument When Fox intercepted fourth-period pass Terry had a wide open field ahead but collided w'ith a teammate as he made the catch and both fell Miami got a great break when Kichefski recovered fumble on the Carolina 13 Tobin could not hold the fourth pass Schemer hurled a shade too high Miami got a break in the fma1 three minutes when Tobin fumbled and Carolina recovered but Carolina was off side But Carolina got it right back hen Schemer passed to Totterdale who could not hold the ball and Stroud took it Captain Stroud
