Pag 10-A THE MIAMI HERALD Saturday Nov 20 1943 Hurricanes Mate Edge Over Presbyterian Tonight Only Spotlighting Irish Seahawk Skirmish Spotlights Gridiron Card Rose Bowl Jack Beats Philly Bob For Crown All-College Tilt On Tap Presbyterian college with ft busy forward and a University of Miami football team which Is still somewhat of a mystery get together in the Orange Bowl at 8:15 today in tne only all-college football game to be played in Miami this season The visiting team with five victories in 10 starts has tallied 145 points in scoring in every game except one It has defeated Clemson 13-12 for its best game and has a fast-moving colorful aggregation Hank Carver star forward passer is the great threat of the invaders handicap has been in reserves The replacements are freshmen The defense has been fair and so Presbyterian games usually find both elevens tallying two touchdow ns or more Miami winner in three of four has shown well on defense against running attacks but the defense against passing has not been as good This means Presbyterian' scoring chances should be fairly bright The Hurricanes owever have a better offense than shown thus far Changes in the lineup and injuries have kept the team from really clicking on offense Tonight however should be the night Harvey James with one game as quarterback behind him is ready to step out and show the folks how to run a team and with Harvey to do the blocking the Miami attack should function better than ever before THREE IJNELP CHANGES -Coach Eddie Dunn is starting John Kinsey at tackle Bill ELsnor at halfback and Bill Ievitt at guard for the first time The other eight starters opened against Jacksonville two weeks ago Chuck Klein will captain the team tonight Miami should be well off in reserve material since Bull Barwick at tackle Walter Watt at halfback and Lonnie Deas at guard who started the Jacksonville game are available along with four transfer stars who will be making their Miami debuts tonight Georgia Tech has contributed a talented trio in Claude Harrison a very hard-driving fullback Leon Wright an excellent end and James Owen3 who will help out at tackle Moose Alder who was at Vanderbilt a year ago and saw service against Presbyterian with South Carolina earlv in this campaign is an able tackle replacement Also to see action is Ray Smith another halfback ith Paul Carifeo and Joe Krutulis sure to be in the lineup too for Miami As an added incentive for the Hurricanes Lt Jack Harding and Lt Hart Morris chief coaches for the team last year will be on hand to a look" as they are home briefly from Navy duty The lineuna: TULANE UNIVERSITY had such an ouisianding football season this year but the cheerleaders have helped to provide interest in the games For example Miss Miniette Stars and Jimmie McConnell a naval training student at Tulane demonstrate during a stadium practice session one of the acrobatic stunts they perform at the games Grab-bag Type Of Football WillKeep Army On Martin By WHITNEY MARTIN A-inrlatrd Trao Sporta Writer YORK Nov 19 You can't expect the Drown football team to defeat Army Saturday everything considered any more than you would expect to see a tunnel running through a train or a street car running for a passenger That is everything would have to be turned around and upside down for such a thing to happen The Army may win by quite large score and probably will considering defensive record Jackson-Edisou By EVERETT CLAY football teams here are announces a letter signed by from Ohio Pennsylvania and West have teams back home in Ohio and Pennsylvania which are the best in the country and proven they could beat any team here easy the University of Miami included Take Massillon Canton McKinley Alliance Warren in Ohio Parkersburg and Weirton in West Virginia and New Castle Altoona and Erie in Pennsylvania And many other high schools in that section could easily defeat your best and the University of Miami too us what big high school which I have named has Miami High ever played in post-season games None because it is afraid and might get hurt We play touch football like they do here and 1 know of one year when four teams in Ohio were undefeated but did Miami High play any of them? No It played some Class school named Turtle Creek Fa You know as well as we do anybody can win games when they play anybody Could any high school here compare with Massillon from Ohio? No Why I could spot you 20 points in this game and I know Massillon would beat them by 30 boys from Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia" I think automatically classified themselves with their remarks about a high school team being able to beat the University of Miami And in order to save future embarrassment from such ridiculous statements as they made in the letter I am going to pass along a few facts and figures to them this morning Miami High has played two Ohio and two Pennsylvania teams in the annual Christmas intersectional games The Stingarees whipped Stivers of Dayton 18-0 in 1030 and lost to Waite of Toledo 13-7 in 1932 Scott of North Braddock Pa won here 26-13 in 1935 but Miami High beat McKeesport 19-13 in 1938 Does this sound like the back home in Ohio and can defeat team here The misguided from Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia" furthermore may be interested to know Massillon played McKeesport the same season as Miami High Mighty Massillon was able to beat the Pennsylvanians only by 19-7 any high school here compare with they ask Miami football record not only compares favorably with that of Massillon but over a 14-year period since the annual Christmas intersectional games were inaugurated is superior Since 1929 Miami High has won 126 victories against 20 losses and six ties Massillon won 112 lost 25 and tied six These figures do not include 1943 The Stingarees have taken six in a row this season and figure to go into the Kiwanis benefit game with High Dec 3 for the Southern championship with a string of 2S straight What about the calibre of opposition? I think either school ran claim an edge in this Important consideration Both have played the toughest teams it was possible to schedule in their own and neighboring states Since 1932 Miami lineup has been largely composed of the championship clubs from Georgia Alabama Tennessee Kentucky Virginia North and South Carolina Christmas games included the Stingarees have played teams from 21 different states Massillon likewise has butted heads ith the top high school teams from Marblehead Mass to Lincoln Nebr The schools have a common difficulty in that all their opponents point for them and their records are all the more remarkable in view of this Very few times in the last 14 years has either been the underdog and able to slip up on a team is unfortunate Miami High and Massillon have never been able to get together Ohio State Interscholastic regulations however forbid the playing of post-season games and the question of the use of negro players might be difficult to solve The Massillon squad usually includes five or six negro players Game Cancelled Due lo rain the Andrew Jackvin-Miami Edison football game scheduled at the Orange Howl Friday night was cancelled The contest was scheduled for 8 in but after the heavy rains of Friday afternoon officials of the two schools agreed to call it off No announcement was made as to when the rained-ont contest would be staged By JACK CUDDY United Ereia Sporta Writer NEW YORK Nov 19 A persistent wildcat attack enabled brown-skinned Beau Jack to recapture the lightweight crown from Champion Bob Montgomery on a 15-round decision Friday night before 16000 frenzied fans in Madison Square Garden Beau Jack greatest drawing drawing card among currently active fighters registered his finest triumph before a irowd that paid $96873 This brought Jack's total eight Garden gates to nearly $600000 The decision was unanimous by Referee Arthur Suskind (Young Otto) and Judges Bill Healy and Joe Agnello The referee was the only one of the trio who gave Montgomery more than five rounds He voted seven six and two The United Press scored eight for Beau Jack five for Montgomery and two even Both battlers were bleeding at nose and mouth when they ended the melee and Beau Jack had a balcony of bruises over his left brow There were no knockdowns but each was staggered and on wobbly legs occasionally before the torrid brawl was finished EXPLOSIVE SPEED Beau Jack who was handicapped by an injured knee when he lost to Ruffin showed no signs of the injury Friday night tore about the ring like a catnip-happy tomcat at times plastering bewildered Montgomery with flurries of left jabs then stepping in with smashes to body or bolo uppercuts to the head At close quarters he pumped uppercuts to bobbing chin with the speed and explosiveness of a piston It was a see-saw fight although Jack garnered most glory during the periods that he-took command of the battle He won'1 the first two rounds but Montgomery came back to stagger' him with a right to the chin in the third Beau rallied to take the fourth slowing Monty with a right to the chin and barraging him with jabs and uppercuts Monty came back to take the fifth buckling knees with a right to the jaw and bombarding him on the ropes Beau rallied near the close of the round and came out punching dynamically to win the sixth and seventh Flying Win In Rain 38-6 FORT LAUDERDALE Nov 19 Neither the rain nor St of Miami could check Fort fleet backs here Friday night as they ran wild to score a 3S-6 victory The regulars did not see a great amount of service as they were being rested for the Thanksgiving game with Miami Beach St only touchdown came midway of the fourth period when Ferrell Fitzpatrick caught a kickoff and hugging the sideline sped 98 ards to score Jim Ta3rlor accounted for Fort first twotouchdowns running 94 yards around right end for the first one and 68 for the second after taking the ball from Bill Sharp on a reverse Sharp clicked off a 4S-yard touchdown run in the second quarter In the period Julian Ross plunged over to climax an 85-yard drive which Roland Hodges helped with two long runs Hodges then got into the scor ing spree in his own rights racing 30 yards for a touchdown The last touchdown was made by Bob Way land who went 12 yards off tackle to end a drive The game was played in a driv ing rain No forward passes were attempted The lineups: LONNIE DEAS will alternate at guard with Bill Levitt for the University of Miami in tonight's (game against Presbyterian at the Orange Bowl Hawks Keeping Irish Guessing vi Over MaznicI By CHARLES CHAMBERLAIN Associated Tress Snorts Writer SOUTH BEND Ind Nov The extent of Halfback Frank Maz-nicki's injuries has kept the'Notre Dame coa'ching staff guessing this week just as shrewd Don Faurot coach of the Iowa Seahawks had planned The Irish still will be guessing up to kickoff time Saturday when they meet the Navy Preflight team before an expected sell-out throng of 56000 Although Maznicki the former Chicago Bear who became the percussion cap in system this fall was said to be definitely sidelined with a knee injury earlier this week he was in eluded on a 36-man traveling squad He and five other ex-professionals are the shock absorbers of the undefeated and untied Seahawks who vaulted into the No 2 spot behind Notre Dame on the list of the leading teams Ironically Maznicki learned much of liis football under Coach Frank Leahy at Boston College Leahy knows his abilities and respects them So little wonder that true status has remained a well-guarded secret He may be handicapped as much as Faurot insists but even so the injury has served as bait for a guessing game a perfect play on the part of the former Missouri coach who took over Bernie job at the preflight station this year In addition to being the leading scorer Maznicki also is key man in the Seahawks' pass defense Without him the Seahawks are believed to be quite vulnerable to an air raid The Irish have spent most of their -time in practices polishing their overhead game featuring the battery of Johnny Lujack and his towering target end John Yonakor Yonaker missed two days of drills undergoing an operation to remove a splintered tooth Lcischen Scans Cage Talent Coach Nick Lcischen had the opportunity to look over his basketball talent at St Thursday afternoon when he put a sizable squad through a preliminary physical test but since there are no veteran players St must start from scratch Lcischen faces the problem of a very light team and will devote much of the earlier training to developing speed The schedule will call for a complete round-robin of home bases Games are anticipated with all the schools in the Southeastern Catholic League Particular emphasis will be places on the physical condition of the players rather than ability and finesse of the game Elementary fundamentals will be satisfactorily completed before any faster movements of basketball are Teams Idle This Week By The Associated Tress NEW YORK! the scenes of the major football games As a forerunner of launching ceremonies at the New England Shipbuilding Corp yard here next Monday in which a Liberty Ship will be named for the famed player and coach of Harvard Cornell and Columbia elevens radio broadcasters will pay tribute to him between the halves of games system of coaching did much to revolutionize football and gave the Crimson an era of gridiron prosperity Panafeninies Win Three From Blow Rolling in real stride Pana-femmes won three matches from the Blow Title Company in the Business Women's Bowling League at the Playdium Friday night while Jeeps won two from Handy Dandies In the other league match Beauty Shop pin-top-plers took two from Kansas City Title Co High team game went to Beauty Shop with 751 and high set honors went to the same team with 2187 Mildred Gibson rolled high individual game of 198 and high set of 552 but we have an idea the Bruins will keep the Cadets on their toes the entire 60 minutes and may even register a few points themselves a most amazing outfit this Brown eleven of 1943 It models its defense after that of the Rhode Island State basketball team which give a whoop how many points the other team scores as long as it scores more All it wants is its last bats in words WON THREE GAMES In its last three games Brown defeated Princeton 28-20 Yale 21-20 and the Coast Guard Academy 34 to 3b giving some kind of an idea of the grab-bag brand of football Skip team plays admitted that the opposition A-l Army defeated the same Yale team 39 to 7 which gives you an idea But Ihe fact remains the Bruins always are in there pitching trying to do something usually unexpected hether a quick kick on first down or a statue of Liberty play We saw two of those games and in both of them a rugged little guy named Jack Cokefair was bouncing all over the place busier than popping corn He passed and he ran and he kicked and he was forever an obnoxious Gremlin as far as the other team was concerned It turns out that this Cokefair is only a substitute for one Doc Savage who hurt a knee in an informal game with informal team early in the season and was sidelined until last week when he got into action against the Coast Guard and resumed tear ing things loose INTEREST THE FANS Savage is rated one of the East's best backs some putting him above the Glenn Davis in all around effectiveness Anyway if that much better than Cokefair Army may itself in for a busy day defensively As mentioned before the Cadets will go through the Brown line like the Bruin forwards were on hinges and wore door knobs If teams like Princeton and Yale could do it the Army figures to do it that much better But win or lose the Brownies play the kind of football the fans like to see They don't get a score and then try to sit on it the rest of the afternoon To begin with they do that their defense being what it is They just have to stay in there playing leapfrog with the other team in a scor ing race hoping they get the final jump We have an idea that their kind of football is the kind that we will see a lot more of to use a little home-made grammar after the war The emphasis even now is on offense and with passing being perfected to the point where even good team is liable to have several touchdowns scored against it in game the stirring scoreless ties may be a thing of the past We've seen too many of those deathless struggles with the teams battering their brains out between the 20-vard lines It leaves a feel ing of futility and satisfies nobody The public likes to see a winner How would a score of Army 41 Brown 14 be Saturday?
